Solutions for Difficult Couch Delivery Situations

Disassembling a Sofa

Couches that arrive in multiple parts can generally be taken apart and reassembled. This process includes removing legs and cushions to avoid damage during movement. Ensuring that all detachable parts are removed makes it easier to maneuver the couch through tight spaces.

Hiring Professionals

Disassembling and reassembling a couch is a task best left to professionals, especially if it involves complex furniture. Many service providers offer this service and have the necessary tools and expertise. While it can be costly, it is often less expensive than replacing or returning the couch.

Local Furniture Store Assistance

Local furniture stores can be a valuable resource for finding skilled individuals who can help disassemble and reassemble furniture. Even if this service is not advertised, employees with the right knowledge and tools may be available to assist at a lower cost.

Handling Sleeper Sofas

Moving a sleeper sofa requires removing the mattress to reduce weight and size. This makes it easier to navigate tight spaces. Additionally, the sleeper mechanism can sometimes be removed for even greater ease of movement.

Intermediate Disassembly

For those comfortable with more advanced tasks, the sleeper mechanism in a sofa can be removed with the right tools. This requires careful handling and knowledge of the furniture’s construction to ensure it can be reassembled correctly and safely.

Cost Considerations

The cost of professional disassembly and reassembly can be high, ranging from $400 to $800. However, this expense may be justified compared to the potential loss from returning or selling the couch at a lower price.

Reducing Weight and Size

Removing all detachable parts from the couch, including legs and cushions, reduces its overall weight and size. This practice prevents damage to both the furniture and the surrounding environment during movement.

Planning and Measurement

Accurate planning and measurement of the space through which the couch will be moved are essential. This includes considering doorways, hallways, and staircases to ensure a smooth transition.

DIY Tips

For those attempting a DIY approach, watching how-to videos and carefully following instructions is crucial. Ensuring that the correct tools are used and that no steps are skipped will help prevent damage and ensure the furniture is safely reassembled.

Hey couch potatoes, it’s me Alex with Couch.com. We’re going to talk about difficult delivery situations. Your couch didn’t fit exactly where you were hoping it would, and you’re figuring out what your options are. We’re going to explore those today.

0:14
Can you take a sofa apart to move it? Generally speaking, yes, you can, but there are a few things to consider. One, maybe your couch came in different parts. Obviously, you can take them apart, but it may seem obvious. However, some people do have the question: if my couch came in four different pieces and I put it together once, is it safe to take those apart and put them back together? Yes, it is.

0:36
You want to consider the fact that there may be ways to take certain parts of your couch off in certain pieces. The arm may be removable, certainly the legs. The legs are removable on almost every single couch, and if you’re going to be moving your couch, just take the legs off every single time. You’ll go through a door, you’re going to knock into something, you’re going to damage the legs or possibly damage the sofa. So, remove the legs, remove the cushions, remove every part of the couch that you can if removing it from one place to another.

Can a couch be taken apart and put back together? Yes, it can, usually with the help of a professional. The good news is there are plenty of professionals out there that perform this service. A quick Google search in your local area will reveal a few service providers that can come and literally take your couch apart and put it back together. This, however, involves some tools that you probably don’t have around the house and some furniture know-how and experience that you probably don’t have, so it’s best to hire a professional. However, one pro tip we have for you is that this can cost a lot of money. Sometimes to take a couch apart fully and put it back together in another room can cost anywhere from 400 up to eight hundred thousand dollars. Very expensive to do something like this; however, it may be a lot cheaper or less expensive than returning your couch or having to sell it at a big loss or donate it or whatever your other options you may be considering.

Another helpful tip is to call around to some local furniture stores. These furniture stores may not be that busy, and they may have some employees with some extra knowledge and the specific tools needed to do such a thing. They may not do this as a professional service or offer it on their website, but almost every furniture store or furniture warehouse has people who know how to fix furniture. So, this may be a very good tip to save some money. It may take a little bit of elbow grease, but often you can find someone to get the job done for you.

2:30
Can you take apart a sleeper sofa to move it? Yes and no. So here are two things to consider when moving your couch or sleeper sofa to another room if there’s a sleeper mechanism inside it. One, you can remove the mattress. This serves two functions: one, it makes the couch considerably less heavy because sleeper sofas can be very heavy to manage, and two, it can oftentimes make the couch sometimes narrower and easier to maneuver through tighter doorways or turns.

3:00
At the store that I used to manage, we would have trouble delivering sleeper couches sometimes because the sleeper mechanism sometimes goes even further than the frame of the sofa when delivering it through a doorway. Take that mattress out, fold the mechanism back up, and you’ve just saved yourself a few inches. Another thing to consider is taking out the sleeper mechanism altogether.

3:19
This is a little bit more of an intermediate or advanced practice, but you can do it with the right tools. If you take a look at your sleeper mechanism, you’ll see that it’s attached in usually three to five places on each side of your couch in the inner workings. If you find the right screwdriver or drill attachment, you can literally remove these pieces and put them back in. That being said, this is a piece of furniture that typically is used to house your friends, loved ones, possibly kids, so you want to make sure that you’re doing it right. Don’t cut any corners. Watch a few how-to videos before attempting and then maybe give it a shot.
