Prairie View A&M to establish a School of Public and Allied Health in the fall

Following approval by The Texas A&M University System and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, TX, will establish a new School of Public and Allied Health in the fall.
According to an article, the “school will house the programs in the current Department of Health and Kinesiology along with the new degrees in Public Health” that the university has recently established. Dr. Angela Branch-Vital, “current Department Head of Health and Kinesiology,” has been named the executive director of the new school.
“I am quite pleased to report that the current Department Head of Health and Kinesiology, Dr. Angela Branch-Vital, has agreed to assume this role,” said Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs James M. Palmer. “Dr. Branch-Vital has ably led her current department through unprecedented growth and worked with Dean of Undergraduate Studies Dr. Alphonso Keaton to establish the Public Health degree.”

Central State University to offer welding and other workshops this summer

Central State University, Wilberforce, OH, will be offering three sessions of a workshop on welding and heat treatment this summer with the first being from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on June 5 – 9, 2023 presented by Alessandro Rengan, who holds a degree in Materials Science and Engineering.
As stated in a release, there will be 13 other workshops offered, including: “robotics, programmable logic controller and flexible manufacturing systems; metal additive manufacturing; environmental permitting and auditing; environmental health and safety and security (EHSS); principles of wastewater treatment and resource recovery; heat treating; CNC programming; additive manufacturing, reliability quality assurance and metrology; energy efficiency and auditing of water wastewater system; iOS app development; Android app development; principals of drinking water treatment and water quality; and small business/entrepreneurship workshops.”

ASU alumna celebrates 107th birthday

Ethel Abrahams, an Alabama State University, Montgomery, AL, alumna, recently celebrated her 107th birthday on Sunday, May 28, and was presented with the Atlanta alumni chapter for ASU’s first centenarian membership award.
Abrahams, who has 1 daughter, 3 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, was born in 1916 and graduated from the university in 1938. After she graduated, she worked as a 5th-grade teacher in Alabama for many years until her retirement.
Abrahams said in a release that she “attributes her long life to her unwavering faith” where the first thing she does every morning is read her bible, keeping her “faith strong in ‘the man upstairs.’”
Coppin State University launches food resource center

Coppin State University, Baltimore, MD, officially launched Coppin Corner, a new on-campus resource committed to helping students facing food insecurity. According to an article, Coppin Corner will operate year-round and will provide “non-perishable food items, frozen foods, personal hygiene products, and cleaning supplies for registered Coppin State University students.”
“Coppin State is an anchor institution serving students from communities spanning from Baltimore to Australia. We educate students who are often supporting themselves, as well as their loved ones,” said President Anthony L. Jenkins. “Our faculty and staff work to equip our students not only with the education they need to achieve upward economic mobility, but also nutritious foods to build better, healthier lives. Coppin Corner will not solve every problem our students face; however, we are hopeful it will allow them to focus more on their studies, and less on where their next meal is coming from.”

Free People launches clothing line designed by A&T alumna

North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro, NC, alumna Samya Gilliam-Frazier has designed a line of Aggie activewear apparel for the women’s clothing brand Free People’s School Pride Capsule.
According to an article, Gilliam-Frazier and two other HBCU students “worked as a design intern for Free People’s activewear brand FP Movement” last June and were “tasked with designing a line of clothing apparel inspired by their respective universities for the company’s School Pride Capsule.”
The result from her was “a unisex line of clothes featuring the A&T wordmarks or displaying the Aggie bulldog, ranging from a crewneck-inspired cut-off T-shirt and a quarter-zip hoodie to a short crop pair of sweatpants with ‘Aggieland’ on the side.”
“You can wear them when you’re working out or lounging around town,” Gilliam-Frazier said of the clothes. “Students can buy them. Alumni can buy them. I wanted to make them gender neutral and create nice, sellable products.”
