UConn football coach Randy Edsall: Boise State is better than UCF

UConn coach Randy Edsall didn’t show any American Athletic Conference favoritism when he was asked which team is better: UCF or Boise State.

The Huskies were routed by the Knights 56-17 in the season opener and then got trounced 62-7 by the Broncos in Week 2 of the college football season.

UCF and Boise State are expected to compete all season for the Group of 5 bid to an Access Bowl. Last season, the Knights earned the bid and defeated Auburn in the Peach Bowl.

So who is better so far this year? Edsall says Boise State.

“I think they’re both very fine football teams,” Edsall told the Hartford Courant. “As I studied the tape and watched the tape overall and now being here tonight and playing them live, I think Boise State is probably a little bit better and a little ahead of Central Florida right now.”

Of course, he added, “We got hammered by both of them.”

UCF moved up to No. 18 in the latest Associated Press and Amway Coaches’ polls released Sunday, but Boise State jumped ahead of UCF and claimed the No. 17 spot in both polls.

If the College Football Playoff selection committee ranked the teams the same way at the end of the year, Boise State would get the Group of 5 bid to an Access Bowl and UCF would be shut out.

Boise State earned a 56-20 win at Troy in the season opener and rolled to a 62-7 win over UConn this past Saturday.

UCF, meanwhile, thrashed UConn 56-17 in the opener and was a bit sloppy during the 38-0 rout of South Carolina State.

Both teams will take on Power 5 opponents this weekend, with UCF playing at struggling North Carolina as long as a hurricane headed for the Carolinas doesn’t alter the schedule. Boise State, meanwhile, is slated to play at No. 24 Oklahoma State.

Edsall’s comments may not make him popular among UCF fans, but he did previously early praise from Knights coach Josh Heupel for visiting UCF defensive back Aaron Robinson in the hospital while the Knight was receiving treatment for a concussion he suffered during the game against UConn.
