A Houston mother was beaten to death on her 33rd birthday in a grisly attack her family and friends believes was witnessed by her 4-year-old daughter.
Amanda Baird’s roommate, recounting Tuesday’s horrific discovery, said she found the little girl alone with her mother’s unconscious body after returning home from work around 2 a.m.
“I found the baby. The baby is the one who opened the door and let me in,” TK King told KHOU. “I’m so worried about the baby at this point, because of what she went through and what she saw.”
Police and paramedics called to the scene transported the mother of two to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead from blunt force trauma.
Witnesses told police they believed Baird’s ex-boyfriend was at the home at the time of the attack and that the couple had gotten into an argument.
A man by the same name was later found dead from a suspected suicide, according to local reports. Houston police would not immediately confirm those reports or publicly release the man’s name.
Baird’s friend Jennifer Lester produced text messages sent from Baird the night before that appeared to confess to enduring domestic violence.

In one text, shared with KHOU, Lester asked if her ex-boyfriend had been physical with her.
Baird’s reply: “Yes. I’m OK.”
Lester said she invited the single mom, whose older daughter is aged 10, to stay at her house. She apparently declined.
