Who doesn’t look at the weather forecast? If I am golfing or attending an outdoor parish activity, I always have a peek at the weather channel. It is good to have an idea of what to expect. Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit of Truth “to declare the things that are coming.” I used to think that this was prophecy and, well, I am no prophet. But actually, I have discovered that Jesus is constantly declaring to us the things coming.
It’s like looking to see what the weather will be on a given day. It all has to do with “awareness.” Consciously throughout the day, I recall the Presence of the Lord with me, especially when I am about to do something. He did promise at His Ascension that He will be with us always. That means “now,” as I am writing this reflection and as you are reading it.
There is a clarity of mind when our focus is on Jesus, even for a moment or two. It leaves a space in our minds for Him to fill with whatever He knows we need. So I get out of the driver’s seat and am a passenger of Jesus. He never told us to lead but often told us to follow Him.
I don’t force myself to make this happen. Instead, I relax and welcome Jesus to be with me. It is an act of will I make all the time. He is Lord, and I am His servant. I sum up this process in one word, awareness. It can happen in an instant. John the Baptist said it best, “He must increase and I must decrease. So it is the beatitude, “Blessed are the poor in spirit; theirs is the Kingdom of God.” You will know “the things that are coming” because they will be happening before your eyes.

THINGS THAT ARE COMING.
