MEDIA — National Vietnam War Veterans Day will be observed at the Pennsylvania Veterans Museum in Media on Sunday, April 2, to honor and commemorate the service and sacrifices of the nearly 3 million men and women who served in the armed forces during the Vietnam War.

The museum will be open from noon to 5 p.m. for veterans and guests to visit and see the museum’s powerful Vietnam War Exhibit. This exhibit features interviews with local Vietnam veterans and elaborations on various aspects of the Vietnam War, from start to finish, on touch screens. Memorabilia and artifacts from this war are also on display. In addition, collectors and historians will be displaying original period military uniforms, equipment, gear and personal artifacts.

The federal holiday, National Vietnam War Veterans Day, is officially held on Wednesday, March 29. The date was chosen because the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disbanded when the last U.S. combat troops departed 50 years ago from the Republic of Vietnam.

The Pennsylvania Veterans Museum is located at 12 E. State St. on the lower level of the historic Media Armory. The museum features personal memorabilia and interactive kiosks that tell the history of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, through the eyes of those who served in the military. The museum is free.

Delco Hi-Q inducts accomplished law enforcer into Hall of Honor

Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union Foundation and Delaware County Intermediate Unit will welcome Cyrise Dixon into the Delco Hi-Q Hall of Honor.

This prestigious designation is bestowed upon past Hi-Q participants who have distinguished themselves through career or community service or upon educators and supporters who have made extraordinary contributions to Delco Hi-Q.

According to Hi-Q, Dixon’s accomplishments and service to the community make her an ideal role-model for current Hi-Q students.

Dixon was a member of the Chester High School Hi-Q Team, received her degree in psychology from Muhlenberg College, and her Municipal Police Officers Education and Training certification.

Dixon, a 45-year veteran law enforcement officer and administrator, was the first female patrol officer in Chester, and served as chief of staff for the Chester Police Department, and interim chief operating officer for the city.

As an established member of law enforcement, Dixon was responsible for cultivating numerous positive relationships between police and the community. The focus of her work was primarily directed to and for youth in an effort to prevent them from becoming involved in the Juvenile Justice System as offenders.

Dixon currently serves on the boards of the Chester Community Improvement Program, Delaware County Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation, Senior Community Services, Chester Senior Center’s Advisory Council and is the board chair of The Foundation for Delaware County.

Dixon, along with all 21 Delco Hi-Q teams, will be among the honorees at the FMFCU Foundation Celebration on April 27 at Drexelbrook. Reservations are available at http://www.fmfcufoundation.org/events.

Delco Hi-Q is a partnership between the foundation and the IU.

Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union and the Wilbur C. and Betty Lea Henderson Foundation are the primary corporate sponsors. Additional support comes from longtime sponsor Kimberly-Clark Chester Operations and the Delaware County Daily Times.

Brandywine Battlefield Park presents speaker series

The Brandywine Battlefield Park Associates announce its next speaker in the Revolutionary Speaker Series at Brandywine Battlefield Park, noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18.

Join Bradley Smith, archivist and assistant director of the Berks County History Center in Reading, for a discussion of the extraordinary service and curious array of surgical tools and personal effects of Revolutionary War surgeon Dr. Bodo Otto Sr.

Otto had already been serving patients for 40 years when, at the age of 65, he offered his services to the Continental Army.

As an army surgeon, Otto played a critical role in organizing smallpox inoculations for soldiers.

He also witnessed the Continental Army’s disastrous defeat at the Battle of Long Island, crossed the Delaware River enroute to the Battles of Trenton and Princeton, and served as surgeon-in-chief at Yellow Springs, the primary hospital for soldiers encamped at Valley Forge.

After the presentation, guests can visit the park’s gallery and enjoy light refreshments. Tickets are $20 and available on Eventbrite Revolutionary Speaker Series.

Brandywine Battlefield Park is a National Historical Landmark on 52 acres in Chadds Ford.

It is part of the site of the Battle of Brandywine fought on Sept. 11, 1777, during the Revolution.

The site is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission with the active support of the Brandywine Battlefield Park Associates.
