AMITY – A trash truck reportedly attempted to drive on a flat tire, but pulled over after it caught fire.

The Amity and Monarch fire companies responded to the Wawa off Route 422 in Amity after the J.P. Mascaro and Sons truck was reported to be on fire around 5 p.m.

According to Amity Fire Chief Mike Zomolsky, the truck’s operator had been trying to drive on the flat. It was unclear how long they’d been driving with the bad wheel before they pulled off the road.

Zomolsky said the fire on the wheel was put out quickly.

As crews began reeling up their hoses around 5:15 p.m., the distinctive, pungent smell of burnt rubber hung in the air. A Mascaro car was parked not far from the trash truck.

Amity Police also responded and could be seen investigating the wheel with their flashlights not long before the fire crews left.
