TIJANI Latifat became the first athlete to pick Nigeria’s medal in Tokyo 2020 Paralympics in 47 kg lifting 107 kg to emerge the winner.
The Ogun state born athlete, after her failed first attempt lifted successful in the second attempt and in the third attempt lifted 107 to pick gold medal at stake thus becoming the first Nigerian to pick gold at the ongoing Paralympics Games.
Her attempt for works record in 117kg failed as she could not make it but got herself Paralympics record of 107 which threw the Tokyo International Forum venue of the event into wild jubilation.
Speaking with Sportingtribune shortly after the medal presentation of Latifat who commended the minister of youth and sport for his vision for the athletes said she is dedicating her success to the Almighty Allah, adding that her victory will spur her colleagues on to win medal for the country.

Tijani Latifat said, “I’m so happy and glad for what I just achieved. I promised to bring home the gold and I thank God for helping me bring this gold home this year.
“I am dedicating this Gold medal to my humble and hardworking coach who is always pushing and motivating me. He keeps me on my toes and makes me stay focused.”
In his reaction, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sport Nebeolisa Anako who could not hide his feelings after the victory was recorded said”this is what we have been waiting for and going by our preparation before the games, we knew it will happen and it is our aim to surpass feat recorded at previous games,” he said.
The Chief de Mission, Peter Nelson having expressed happiness with the gold medal said the athlete would be adequately honoured and paid her on the spot cash award promised by the Federal government.
