BETHLEHEM- It took the Golden Hawks a quarter to find their footing aganst the Parkland Trojans Saturday night at Bethlehem Area School District Stadium, but once they did, the Trojans could not stem the tide as the Hawks never relented in a 44-7 convincing win.

Playing, what may be considered a complete game on both sides of the ball, Bethlehem Catholic totaled 410 yards of offense and only allowed Parkland run game to a mere 44 yards on 31 tallies.

After managing just a 24 yard field field goal by placekicker Anthony Barczynski with just 47 ticks left in the opening quarter. The Hawks got it rolling in the second stanza. Running back Tavion Banks got the offense on track with a nifty 64 yard run on a third-and-14 situation. Quarterback Jared Richardson then connected with Matt Stianche for a 19 yard score on third down with 6:12 left in the first half. Richardson threw for 185 yards in the contest.

Then the dual combination of Malik Thomas and Tavion Banks took over the game. Both backs had over 100 yards apiece in the contest. Thomas finished with 119 yards on 13 touches and two scores, while Banks had 16 carries for 116 yards and also found the end zone twice. Thomas’ first score came on a 19 yard dash with 4:40 left and Banks scampered in from 32 yards out with 2:24 till intermission making the score 24-0.

Bethlehem Catholic coach stated, “They (Parkland) came out showing us a wrinkle of going with a 3-4 defense, something we only seen with them in passing situations. It took awhile for us to adjust. It slowed us down until we got used to it. They were aggressive and kept coming at us.” He concluded.

Thomas and Banks didn’t miss a beat in the second half. Thomas found the end zone from 54 yards out midway through the third quarter and Banks darted in from the six with 3:51 on the clock.

Parkland avoided the shutout when sophomore signal caller Ty Tremba, who came in late in the first half dropped in a perfect pass to a streaking Dante Medlar from 36 yards to make the score 37-7 heading into the fourth quarter

Bethelehem Catholic closed out the scoring as defensive lineman Steven Hattala had a scoop and score fumble recovery from 4 yards to put the game in mercy rule with seven minutes left.

It doesn’t get any easier for either team, as Bethlehem Catholic will play outside of Bethlehem for first time this season (3-1 overall, 2-1 EPC South) will be at Andrew Leh Stadium, to face (4-0 overall, 3-0 EPC South) Nazareth a 35-33 winner over previously unbeaten Freedom. Parkland (2-2, 1-2) will be back at BASD Stadium to play Liberty (2-2, 0-2). Liberty coming off a 44-7 loss to Easton.
