The NCIS-verse is down one show at CBS, following NCIS: Hawai’i‘s cancellation at the network on Friday.
Several of the procedural’s cast members have mourned the axing on social media, including Tori Anderson (aka FBI agent Kate Whistler), who lamented: “Having a really hard time processing this one. Thank you to our incredible crew who made every single day feel like I was living a dream. I want to say thank you to all the fans. My heart breaks for you as well.
“This is a huge loss for representation,” Anderson pointed out. “Love you all so much.”
NCIS: Hawai’i made franchise history as the first NCIS series to launch with an LGBTQ agent: Lucy Tara (played by Yasmine Al-Bustami). Lucy, with Anderson’s Kate, formed the ‘ship that quickly was dubbed “Kacy,” and which got meaningful screentime — especially during Season 2.
NCIS: Hawai’i was also the first program in the franchise to boast a female lead, in Vanessa Lachey’s Special Agent in Charge Jane Tennant. (Lachey shared her own cancellation thoughts here.)
Anderson followed up her initial reaction with a longer, Saturday post that said, “Goodbyes are never easy and this one definitely hurts. What a privilege to be able to work alongside the incredible cast and crew of NCIS: Hawai’i for three seasons. This show changed my life. Hawai’i changed my life. I wish it wasn’t ending but I’m grateful for every single moment. We had quite the beautiful ride.
“Thank you to the creators Chris Silber, Jan Nash and Matt Bosack for trusting me with Kate,” she continued. “Thank you for creating a show where representation genuinely mattered. And thank you to our fearless leader Vanessa Lachey for building a work environment most people only dream of.”
Noah Mills, who plays Jesse Boone on the CBS procedural, also reacted to the news on social media. “It was soooo much damn fun while it lasted!” he wrote in an Instagram story. “I will miss so many and so much about making this show. Incredibly grateful for the memories and to the AMAZING people on the great island of Oahu Hawaii, I cannot thank you enough for allowing me to visit, live, play, work and grow in such a special place.”
Jason Antoon, who plays cyber intelligence specialist Ernie (an ally of the aforementioned #Kacy), shared his own cancellation thoughts on Instagram: “This business is brutal and makes no sense. But we had soooo much fun. Love you all and mahalo.”
Of note, Antoon’s real-life wife, Seana Kofoed, plays NCIS: Hawai’i‘s resident M.E., Dr. Carla Chase. “So much ❤️ to our #ncishawaii fans,” she write on Instagram. “We continue to believe in the power of creating great entertainment while representing the world in which we live.”
Series co-creator Christopher Silber offered this tribute: “Four years ago, [Jan Nash], [Matt Bosack] and I started something very special. We joined with an incredible cast, amazing writers and crew… and gathered in Hawai’i to make a show. But ended up creating an ohana. I’m so grateful to you all.”
Co-creator Matt Bosack added: “[NCIS: Hawaii] was a dream. And while it’s ended, I am forever grateful to my partners, [Christopher Silber] and [Jan Nash], our amazing cast, led by [Vanessa Lachey], the entire crew, and this wonderful island I call home. I’m proud of the stories we were able to tell over these 3 seasons. To tell fun Navy crime mysteries but also dig into ideas about family, life, love, identity… To all the fans, especially those who saw themselves in these characters, mahalo nui loa. A hui hou.”
For a hot minute this week, NCIS: Hawai’i was the only scripted CBS series still awaiting word on its fate for the 2024-25 season; its cancellation came two weeks after NCIS scored a Season 22 renewal and more than a month after the franchise’s first international offshoot, NCIS: Sydney, was picked up for Season 2. (TVLine hears that at this time, there’s no information regarding NCIS: Hawai’i being shopped elsewhere.)
Season-to-date, NCIS: Hawai’i is averaging 7.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 demo rating (with Live+7 playback data). Out of the 14 drama series that CBS has aired this TV season, it ranks No. 6 in total audience (behind Tracker, NCIS, FBI, Blue Bloods and The Equalizer) and eighth in the demo.
The show now joins fellow CBS casualties CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd. Meanwhile, the NCIS franchise will continue to expand via the “Young Gibbs” prequel NCIS: Origins, claiming a spot on CBS’ 2024-25 schedule, and a Tony/Ziva-centric offshoot that is bound for Paramount+.
How are you feeling about NCIS: Hawai’i‘s cancellation? Tell us in a comment below.
I am heartbroken! This is the most absurd decision. This was a wonderful show whose characters were Loved. So sad,,,,,,
Can we get Ernie on the mother’s hip NCIS?
That would be fun.
I know it was probably autocorrect of mothership, but “on the mother’s hip” made me chuckle amid the gloom news so thanks for the unintentional laugh.
———
Definitely a loss for representation; it is a shame they could not make it work out.
Oh, yes!!! Ernie joining NCIS would be awesome!!!
And I hate that they’ve cancelled the show. Between NCIS: Hawaii, CSI: Vegas & So Help Me Todd, they’ve wiped out 3 of the 5 CBS shows that I watch. I have no interest in NCIS: Origins. I love NCIS but I don’t want to see other actors portraying characters that we’ve known forever.
Agree 1000 per cent,CBS,you let us down
So agree with you – I also have no interest in NCIS Origins.
So much yes
Inexplicable decision. The show that should have been axed was NCIS: Sydney; it was not nearly as good as Hawaii. I stopped watching Sydney weeks ago. The casting was not up to par. Hawaii was a great show with an awesome cast. It should be shopped somewhere to save it.
Cancelling Sydney wouldn’t of had an impact on Hawaii
Sydney was an internationally produced show by Paramount+ AU/NZ. It was NEVER meant for CBS. But it performed well during the strike and so instead of season 2 being on P+, it’s back on CBS.
Also typical Aussie drama is 6-10eps so Sydney isn’t going to have 22eps like other American shows. So it’s not even likely to be taking a major slot in CBS schedule
“wouldn’t have had” OR “would not have had” are correct
no such thing as “would’nt’ve had”, or whatever it is you though you were trying to spell
I honestly 💯 agree with everything you said. I kept trying to get into the Sidney love but just couldn’t. The characters didn’t mesh for me. But I loved everyone’s relationships on Hawaii!
Cost. Shooting in Hawaii is expensive. And they never quite got the cast right. Kacy and the tech were pretty popular across the board. Everyone else in the cast was somewhat polarizing.
.
People criticized the LL Cool J hiring, but in retrospect it seems like that was sort of an effort to get the ship righted.
.
If not for the strikes, and LL’s hiring, I think NCIS HI probably wouldn’t have been back this year.
Agree about the cost, Patrick, as the company said the show was cut to supposedly support cost-cutting measures. But I disagree about the casting. Lachey was a strong female leader and the relationships all were strong—until they force-fed LL Cool J into the cast. His character just didn’t fit. And you can’t have two bosses. His character undermined Lachey’s and just made no sense. Not cool at all! And Lucy and her partner were cute and hilarious as a couple, but also strong individually. Nearly 8 million viewers a week supported this breath-of-fresh-air show. Such a shame! And cutting the fun So Help Me Todd and long-running NCS Las Vegas was extremely disappointing as well. I hope that another network picks up these shows and runs with them!
I don’t think Yasmine al-Bustani being absent so much (for The Chosen) helped though; her Agent Afloat excuse in s2 was okay because they did use the occasional text and video call to keep her present and develop her character (dealing with the fear of water, confidence in dealing with a case on her own, distance from Kate etc.) but when she’s just missing for random episodes and nobody even blinks, or like, when she popped up in the crossover while AA as if that made sense (i.e. she was already in town) then the balance of the show feels off. Plus, it means they can’t do continuous arcs for her because they have to work around her absences.
I appreciate them letting her go and doing stuff for her career, but in terms of representation with Kacy it’s perhaps not as good as it could be, and very inconsistent.
Taking off NCIS Hawaii was a bad choice I enjoyed that program very much.
This was the best NCIS other series it was more action-packed than any of the rest of them. The show got canceled my opinion cuz they had too many brown people in there. All of the women agents could defend themselves. It had great story lines. Big mistake canceling the show .
They should get rid of NCIS Sydney that show is horrible The Boss of the American team barely opens her mouth when she speaks have no idea what she says and she’s a horrible actress. CSI Vegas was another horrible show they couldn’t get it back to the original CSI which was very good show
No the show just sucked! Poor character development! New Orleans and L.A had better characters and story lines. Hawaii just put me off and took sleep!
I totally agree with you. It should have been Sydney, not Hawaii. What another stupid decision by CBS!!
Hawaii and Sydney sucked New Orleans was better than both!
Was it a very expensive show or something? I don’t really get it.
I love all the NCIS shows, but this one wasn’t one I kept up with – but only because I felt like the acting wasn’t quite there. It kept pulling me out of it, when things seemed a bit over the top or like a soap opera. But I loved the Hawaiian locations!
It was filmed in Hawaii which makes it super expensive. That was the drawback of NCIS LA, which was filmed in Los Angeles…
ummm no… NCIS itself is shot in LA but it’s supposed to be DC… Thus generic sets…
I wonder if they funding from Hawaii tourism ran out??? I always figured that it was important to 5-0 and Magnum which made sure they had plenty of pretty shots in every episode…. NCIS H didn’t have nearly as much…
Note all of the Hawaiian shows that have been canceled. Or bought to an unceremonious end. Hawaii five-o, Magnum pi, now NCS hawaii. It is expensive to film in Hawaii
Hopefully for CBS NCIS origins does well and not flop otherwise cancelling this will look like a mistake.
I feel they should have renewed Hawaii for 10-13 episodes next season to see how origins goes. If it goes well then cancel Hawaii next year but if it doesn’t live up to the expectations then they could renew Hawaii for a full season
I agree that’s what they should of done I don’t know but I think that the ncis origins is not going to make it cause mark Harmon won’t be on it don’t know for sure will see but cbs is making a mistake with ncis hawaii n so help me you’d n csi vegas big mistake
I so agree! I watched a few episodes of NCIS:Sydney but gave it up quickly. The series finale ended as a cliff-hanger, too. So now what – we’re suppose to guess what that’s about!!?? How stupid!
This socks!
Very upset! This was one of our favorite shows
I am heartbroken! NCIS Hawaii brought so much acknowledgement, acceptance, and celebration that uplifted and empowered women, POC, and LGBTQ+ community! Personally, it brought me so much joy and sense of belonging. TVLine, please help us out by amplifying our voices!
it’s hard to find a show (or even a commercial) without representation nowadays so I don’t get what you or Tori Anderson are talking about.
kind of an outrageous take considering all across the 5 main tv networks (abc, the cw, fox, cbs, and nbc) only 5 shows have a main sapphic couple (in which both characters are series regulars) and 2 of those 5 shows are getting cancelled lol
0.6% of all US marriages are lesbian spouses. There are 481 series being produced in America in 2024. 0,6% of that, rounded up, is 3. That is ignoring not all 481 series stars married couples. So, if 3 shows have a main sapphic couple, it’s about right. And I am pretty sure you are wrong and the count is higher than 3, considering all shows.
As if Network television is all there is.
Maybe look at the increasing trend of cancelling shows specifically with women leads and sapphic couples as opposed to male leads with gay couple. Or maybe just realize that no one gives a crap about your discomfort about it being “all over” because y’all get the privilege of never having to see lack of representation. There were so many minority groups in Hawaii, and now it’s gone.
Maybe understand that if those shows are cancelled is because not enough people are watching.
Actually, the ratings were there. And idk how someone could say there’s too much representation. Is there such a thing? Not enough straight, white men for you? Are you feeling uncomfortable? If not then why not more women, POC, sapphic storylines. Who cares about statistics, if 7m/week are enjoying themselves with these characters, why cancel?
Wait, there are gay couples on network TV?
oh wait…
I hope they don’t end on a cliff hanger. Loved Hawaii! So sad!
The series finale will tease what was to come, but a major cliffhanger won’t really happen, unlike with “So Help Me Todd.”
This suckls! It is a great show with awesome characters and actors. The stories were great and I will miss a show in Hawaii. They need to get rid of the NCIS prequeel. Not an NCIS fan, though it is better without the dreafdul Mark Harmon and Michael Weatherly. Nor would I ever watch a show about Tony. Let’s hope they will reverse their decision like they did with SWAT, another great show.
I agree, Cathie. Weatherly, Harmon, had their day. They left the show and did not care how it affects the series but we found out…it didn’t at all. My heart is broken. I wish they would reverse this like they did for SWAT.
Boo love the show so sad!
I’m devastated. This show, and Kate & Lucy specifically, meant so much to me. i started watching original NCIS again because of Hawaii. Don’t feel the need to keep that up anymore.
I am sad to hear of this show’s cancelation. I love all the characters and even more so since LL Cool J was added. I don’t understand why the networks and streamers keep canceling all the good shows to air stupid shows. Stick to what works and makes the viewers happy.
Very sad, because it seems that CBS does not want to have shows that really have strong women in charge and deal with life issues that are happening in today’s world!!!
I think it sucks. I really looked forward to watching. I think NCIS:Sydney is the one that should have been cancelled.
They should have kept New Orleans and cancelled Hawaii! Between Magnum PI and Hawaii five-O which were a lot better shows than NCIS Hawaii which was just a snore fest and poor characters! Tennant was good I liked her but the rest just sucked! And Sydney just the advertisements did not make me want to watch just like Hawaii!
Ernie is my absolute favorite character on the show. I also liked the M.E., and the FBI lady, but not the other two females. The other guys was okay, but Ernie’s character made the show.
I liked this show, I am very disappointed at CBS!
I’m sorry to hear NCIS Hawaii has been cancelled. I really enjoyed the show. My weekly routine has been watching NCIS followed by NCIS Hawaii. I don’t suppose there’s any possibility of it returning 🤔… Too bad😝
Bummer. I grew to like Hawaii and I think Vanessa Lachey got better as an actress as the series went on. I think if CBS had not green lighted the Gibbs prequel, then this could have survived. The TV business can be cruel sometimes when you grow to like a show and resonate with the characters and then it gets taken away.
Sorry to say this, but Hawaii was the weakest of all the NCIS shows that have been on over the years, including the new Sydney version. Outside of Ms Lachey and the character Jesse, it was a very weak cast. The Hawaiian locals were really never taken advantage of like 5-0 or Magnum did.
I love this show, and I’m disappointed that it’s canceled. The actors/ensemble, scenery, and good stories on Hawaii made this a “must see” for me. And the cultural and inclusive nature of the series has been a wonderful thing… military, LGBTQIA, connection with nature, and native Hawaiian heritage and culture representation made this series very special.
This is a very wrong decision, you are chopping off all the best shows and leaving so-called comedies on. Just for your bottom line 😡😩
This absolutely sucks. Now beautiful Hawaii has no shows. Someone please shop it.😠😠😠😠
forget ncis Sydney n renew Hawaii I have watch ncis since jag don’t care for Sydney Hawaii is more real drama
Not happy!! We enjoyed NCIS HAWAII very much – well written, enjoyed actors personalities. They were fun to watch.
I’m very upset about this cancellation!! I love this show. Damnit, CBS, reconsider, please!!
Why does CBS cancel the three best NCIS franchises. First New Orleans, then LA and now Hawaii. We will now quit watching NCIS. Someone should rethink their decision.
