The Plain Dealer Wednesday morning announced the planned resignation of publisher Terry Egger.
Egger’s resignation letter was circulated among the paper’s staff.
In his letter Egger said he would leave after the first of the year. He’s been at the Plain Dealer for seven years and has spent 30 years in news. He wrote that he is looking “forward to a productive next phase of my life.” Egger said teaching may be part of that next phase.
The announcement comes as questions swirl about future possible changes coming at the paper.
The Plain Dealer is owned by Advance Publications. In recent weeks Advance papers in New Orleans, Harrisburg, Syracuse and other cities have announced plans to switch from a daily publication schedule to just three days a week concentrating more on web site content.
Last week, Egger did not return calls from Channel 3 News about possible similar changes at the Plain Dealer.
A spokesman for the Newspaper Guild, Reporters Union said the staff believes changes are coming. He announced plans for a campaign to educate the community about the important role of a daily newspaper.
All newspaper and other mainstream media are facing challenges as more people focus on digital sources for news and information.
Changes announces at other Advance papers were accompanied by layoffs announcements.
