Whitening Toothpaste: Why It Doesn’t Work

Make the switch from whitening toothpaste to Glo Science

Everyone wants to flaunt a white, healthy smile. If you’re less than happy with your smile or notice that there’s a yellowish tint to it, then you’re reading the right blog! If you’ve watched enough television or have taken the time to pursue the toothpaste aisle in a local store, then you’re probably familiar with the promises of whitening toothpaste. Whitening toothpaste only has temporary effects and can be damaging to your teeth. The teeth whitening techniques that we use here at Smile Designs of Olney last longer, they are FDA-approved and go beyond the surface. To learn more about why whitening toothpaste doesn’t work, keep reading!

Whitening Toothpaste Only Removes Surface Stains

Whitening toothpaste typically only removes surface stains caused by coffee or smoking. Whitening toothpaste doesn’t change the color of your teeth, nor does it treat stains beyond the surface of your teeth. Whitening toothpaste doesn’t contain enough hydrogen peroxide, which is a critical chemical in the teeth whitening process. Most whitening toothpaste uses the chemical blue covarine and abrasives, which only whiten the surface of your enamel, creating an optical illusion. Don’t be fooled again.

Many of these companies forget to mention the negative impacts of whitening toothpaste. The abrasive particles used to whiten your teeth do in fact remove some of the surface stains. Unfortunately, these particles are so abrasive that they also scrub away your surface enamel. The safest method to whiten your teeth is with our GLO Science system that does not damage the enamel and is highly controlled by our staff.

Glo Science DOES Work!

Our in-office teeth whitening system uses one active chemical, hydrogen peroxide. This chemical is a very safe and effective ingredient in whitening your teeth beyond the surface level. Glo Science takes only about an hour. There is minimal to no sensitivity after the teeth whitening process, and the results give you a brighter, whiter smile than whitening toothpaste could ever give you! We have seen patients achieve 4-5 shades whiter in just 1 session!! It is truly amazing!

Teeth Whitening is Not the Only Factor That Matters

Although we love having white teeth, we sometimes need to take a step back and review the bigger picture. It’s always easy to focus on the trees in front rather than taking into consideration the whole forest!. Decaying teeth should take precedence over having a whiter smile. If you notice that you have an overbite or underbite, then whiter teeth will only make this issue more apparent. In these cases, orthodontics should be considered first as it will only make your whitening result that much better! Because we specialize in cosmetic dentistry, we can fix most problems that you have, no matter how severe. However, it is always important to remind ourselves that maintaining the structure of our teeth will always take precedence over the cosmetics. We must always remember to plan for long term success rather than a short term gain.
