We always walk to school and it takes around twenty minutes. Even if I did have a car we would still walk. The only exceptions would be those days when it’s really pouring down, I don’t like ending up like a drowned rat! On nice days we like to walk along the canal, sometimes we take bread for the ducks. The Little Man loves it when we see a barge.
Now Tots100 are holding a competition with Kia all about the walk to school and the things you might see on the way.
There are ten things to find and photograph on the way to school for the competition.
- Something Yellow
- Something That Grows
- A Red Letterbox
- A Blue Front Door
- A Triangle
- A Bus
- Something Old
- An Interesting Shadow
- A Bike
- A Smile
I’ve been complaining a lot lately that we don’t get out enough because of Star not being well. This competition has made me realise that we actually get out loads and see lots of things every day the other two are at school. Doing something like this has opened our eyes and suddenly the trudge to school has become an every day treasure hunt as we think of new things to look out for.
So here are the things we photographed on our way to school.
Something Yellow: We saw so many things that were yellow, the lollipop man’s coat, buttercups on the grass, flowers in gardens, the local shop sign, a notice on a lampost and many more. We decided we liked the words in the road outside the school.
Something that grows: Again we saw lots of growing things, usually of the plant or flower variety. Then I realised that the two little people in front of me where growing every day…sometimes way to quick for my liking.
Next up it was the Red Letterbox. I gave the Little Man a letter to post while I took a photo of him (or six, and Google plus did a fantastic auto awesome which I’ll tag onto the end of this post)
Then we had to find a blue front door and a triangle. We saw many of both, there is a whole street by us with blue doors! We saw triangles everywhere especially in the road signs but in the end we decided to go for these lovely triangles you can see in this garden, and I have bench envy!
We also see lots of buses on the way to school and the littlies loved me taking lots of photos of them. However, I decided to think outside the box and took a picture of the walking bus. When Star was still at school she and Boo would take the walking bus, but Boo doesn’t like going without her sister so she walks with me and her brother instead. I had to zoom in a little as they were ahead of us (we were too slow because of taking all the photos!)
Next we had to find something old and an interesting shadow. I already knew what I wanted to capture for something old, there are some lovely old cottages on the edge of the canal. We have to walk past when we go along the canal and they are so quaint. The high rise flats in the background are pretty old too!
We took loads of photo’s of shadows too but looking through them when we got home I liked this one of the Little Man against the school fence.
Finally, and it’s a lovely way to end, we had to take a photo of a smile. The Lollipop Man, Brian, is a regular feature of our walk to school and he helps us across the road safely every day. He is wearing a yellow high visability jacket so I though I could use him for yellow. His shadow in the road holding his lollipop stick was very interesting, and he is also old. However, I decided to use him for our Smile, because he always smiles when he sees us.
That’s our ten photos and my fingers are crossed for the competition. However, even if I don’t win I’m so happy that we took part and it made me realised that we do get out a lot and the school run can be fun.
For this reason I’m also linking my post up to Country Kids from Coombe Mill.
Here is my Letter box getting the Google auto awesome treatment.
Lovely photos! We walk to play-school too. The annoying thing is I keep forgetting my camera! Then again, my daughter insists to bring her bike too. So as you can imagine, my hands are full! 🙂 #CountryKids.
It is lovely to have something like this make you look at the seemingly ordinary and mundane in a new light. Best of luck with the competition x
Good luck with the competition and I think having a treasure hunt is a great way to get children engaged with their surroundings and keep them entertained. Thanks for linking up and sharing with Country Kids.
I keep meaning to enter this comp too but we are usually rushing too much in the mornings! great photos x
I want to join this but we are always running late. And the after school time he is just too tired to explore and pose with mommy. You have nice photos! Goodluck =) #countrykids
this is brilliant! We've started taking a few photos (our yellow was the 'school' word too – so we'll have to find something else) – but just need to get organised to 'spot' the other things too. Love the walking bus – brilliant!!! x
Love your post on this and your unusual 'findings' – definitely thinking outside of the box, well done! x
Fab photo's from your walk to school, i'm finishing putting mine together from our walks. It was a brilliant way for Lewis to get his brain engaged on his way to school.
