GOP legislators vote against tampons and pads for jail inmates

GOP Rep. Richard Pickett, a small town police chief, opposes providing female hygiene products in Maine’s jails.

A Republican legislator in Maine complained providing female hygiene products to jail inmates will turn the state’s jails into “country clubs.” All the other Republicans on the committee joined him in voting against a bill that would require jails to do that. Read story here.

Comment: It won’t save taxpayers money. When inmates develop health problems from lack of proper hygiene, the jails have to pay for their medical care. (Or do these Republicans plan to deny them that, too?) It seems motivated purely by a mean streak.
