With more than 3,800 undergraduate and graduate students receiving degrees from UT this spring, there are a lot of new Volunteer job-seekers on the market.
UT Career Services said the outlook is increasingly positive.
According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers, employers plan to increase hiring of college graduates by around 7.6 percent over last year. NACE’s estimates are from a recent survey of 1,015 employers from across the country.
Top majors have been in information technology, business, marketing, and computer and mechanical engineering.
Recent UT graduates who have landed jobs report similar trends.
Although data collection is still in the early stage, UT has seen the largest numbers of graduates accepting jobs from the College of Engineering followed by the Colleges of Business Administration, Arts and Sciences, and Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Areas particularly in demand and their starting salaries have been:
- Mechanical engineering ($62,800)
- Electrical engineering ($61,000)
- Civil engineering ($47,000)
- Supply chain management ($58,000)
- Business analytics ($57,333)
- Accounting ($47,520)
- English ($45,000)
Career Services offers some tips for spring semester graduates when searching for jobs:
- Intensify your job search early and throughout the summer, as research indicates that it can take six to eight months after graduation to find the first position.
- Fine-tune and tailor your resume for each job.
- Polish up your LinkedIn profile.
- Network with other graduates and alumni.
- Utilize resources such as UT’s Hire-A-VOL database.
- Contact an employment agency.
