Dress up, bid up, and tee up by attending the ninth annual Alex Haley Scholarship Golf Tournament beginning Sunday, July 15. The scholarships were established to honor world-renowned author and UT professor Alex Haley.
Last year’s tournament included an opportunity to participate in the Acura College Alumni Team Championship at Pinehurst Resort. The Alex Haley team, led by former Volunteer wide receiver Stanley Morgan, was the winner of the 2011 event.
The weekend will “tee off” with a celebrity reception and auction from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, July 15, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in downtown Knoxville. The celebrity golf tournament will take place on Monday, July 16, at the Gettysvue Polo, Golf, and Country Club in West Knoxville. Check in is 7:30 a.m. with a start time of 8:30 a.m.
The annual event is the signature fundraising event for the Alex Haley Scholarships and is sponsored by the Millennium Focus Committee. A dinner for the scholarship recipients will be held on April 18 at the Carolyn P. Brown Memorial University Center to honor these students. More than 225 students have received scholarships totaling more than $225,000 dollars.
