It was as if I heard the wrong word. If anyone tells me that Mr John is a ghost, I’ll sm.ash the person’s face without giving it a second thought. I mean, they were just as normal as us and Mr John was really a gentle man.

“Are you for real”, I said with a trembling voice.

“Yes, I am and you haven’t answered my own question”.

“What was your question”?, I asked him again. I was already wetting my pants while thinking of the best possible way of escape.

“Are you not one of us”?, he asked with a much more serious tone this time.

“One of what”?.

“Guess you’re not”, Mr John concluded. He went into his room after saying this and he started bringing out some stuffs. He appeared with one big pot with dark stains that looked like a dried blood. Without talking to me, he reappeared with another small bowl that has more dark stains.

“What do you need these for”, I asked him as soon he reappeared with the bowl.

“You don’t know”, He asked me while grinning.

“You want to wash them or what”.

“Yes. I want to wash them with your blood. Anne’s family should be hungry by now. They haven’t eaten in a while and it’s my turn to feed us. I never knew that you’re human. We’ll feed on your family when they are back too”.

I waited patiently for him to enter his room before I took a wide dive towards the door. I opened his door with one full swing and I jumped down from the stairs.

My escape was followed by a faint hollow cry of
Mr John. Anne was still guarding the gate and Mr Daniel’s door was still opened. There was no where else for me to run to in the compound. Our own apartment is even more deadly for me to go to.

I started at the tall fence was again and I turned myself into the professional thief I once thought can climb the fence. I ran towards it and jumped over it effortlessly. I realized that day that the fear of death can greatly motivate someone.

I started running on the dark street as soon as I landed on the other side of the fence.

Most of the house I came across were fenced and they were secured with a very big gate that was much more bigger than ours. I knew that knocking on them might waste my time, so I kept on running.

I was still running on the road when I remembered that I know Steve’s house. Steve is one of the guys I used to play games with and he once took me to their house.

The house was not so far from ours, so, I started running towards his house. I got to his house ten minutes later and I was relieved to see their unfenced house staring at me.

I got to his house with my torn slippers and I started knocking vigorously on their door.

I was still knocking the door when I noticed a shiny light in the darkness. It was a bright red light that looked exactly like the eyes of Anne I saw earlier.

That made me doubled my effort and I became more aggressive with the door.

“Open the door, Please. I need help”, I screamed at the top of my voice.

The shiny light was getting closer and I was becoming more aggressive with the door. “Open the door, Steve”, I screamed again.

Fortunately for me, the door was opened.

I rushed into the house immediately and I started narrating my ordeal to whoever opened the door for me. I didn’t want to appear like a thief or an intruder, so, I started explaining myself.

I was still narrating my ordeal when my eyes fell on the same pot and bowl Mr John brought out earlier.

I got choked on my saliva the moment I saw the pot and that was when I checked the face of person that opened the door for me.

It was Anne’s Dad, again.
