Sawgrass Springs Middle School Is Off To A SMART Start!

Sawgrass Springs Middle School is excited to announce that construction has begun on its campus as its SMART Bond improvement projects are now underway. At the School Advisory Council meeting held in early December, attendees – which included students, parents, District and school-based staff – learned how the renovations at the school will make a drastic impact on the campus and on students’ learning experience.

The Deputy Program Manager for the Program Management company AECOM (Architecture, Engineering Construction Operations and Management), detailed the full scope of work that will take place at the school, including building envelope improvements – such as exterior painting, window replacements, etc. – the installation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well as a new fire sprinkler and fire alarm system and ADA code compliance work.

In all, the district is investing approximately $13 million in improvements at Sawgrass Springs Middle.  Principal Melinda Frame-Wessinger shared that she’s most looking forward to the new paint job, which will instantly enhance the school’s appearance. School Board Chair Lori Alhadeff, who represents District 4, was at the ceremony to celebrate the groundbreaking with school community. “I’m really excited to start our SMART bond project here at your school. Let’s get it moving, we’re going to be done by 2025,” Alhadeff said.

Sawgrass Springs Middle School is just one of fourteen schools in active construction in the City of Coral Springs. Across the District, nearly 200 projects are in various stages of construction – the largest number of projects undergoing active construction in the history of the voter-approved SMART Bond Program.  To achieve this progress, AECOM developed and implemented several strategies and standards of procedures, including  weekly coordination meetings and site visits with District staff.

AECOM was hired by Broward County Public Schools to manage the implementation of the SMART Bond Program, which has invested approximately $1.4 billion in improving the quality of the Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) educational experience through investments in the areas of Safety, Music and Art, Athletics, Renovation and Technology (SMART).
