BEAUTIFUL SLEEP
Weary of the prevalence of neutral colour pallets, Toronto-based Sharon Lockwood let her inner artist run rampant in the bedroom. Rather than treat the space as a one-and-done project or as she says, “a uniform,” Lockwood, a seasoned communications designer, likened the decorating process to dressing. “A change of duvet cover can reflect the season, or a mood, or an occasion, or make a statement”–the same motivations influence the way we dress, reasoned Lockwood, who was born in South Africa and raised in London. Her new line of bed linens–called ZayZay, which is her childhood nickname–is a collection of her own abstract paintings digitally printed (for maximum colour saturation) on 400-thread-count 100-per-cent Egyptian cotton. It’s like taking the painting that might grace a wall and tossing it onto the bed– “beauty in use,” she says.
A background in digital printing served Lockwood well three years ago, when she began producing her designs on textiles and found that the process allowed her to achieve a high level of colour. The ZayZay linens–vibrantly hued, riotously patterned and reversible to white–are manufactured in Portugal and available in a limited edition because Lockwood is not looking to create stasis in the bedroom. Bonus: Leave the bed unmade and you’ve created your own spontaneous work of art.
