In The Know

This is the age of information. Everywhere we look we are confronted with news, theories, rants, facts and fallacies. Even when we choose to opt out of social media, you can be sure that a friend or neighbor will inform you of something you didn't know. I have come to realize that the more information I take in, the harder I have to work to filter it all through the lens of truth.  Nancy Pearcey reminds us "the first step in conforming our intellect to God's truth is to die to our vanity, pride, and craving for respect[...]".

In this knowledge-hungry world, it is imperative that we don't surround ourselves with information. I have come to learn that it breeds discontent. From the most trivial things, such as what I wear, to the all-consuming fear of what tomorrow will bring, every thought must be taken captive. It was the temptation of knowledge, after all, which led our first parents to abandon the truth of God and be cast out of paradise.

At a recent trip to the ER I was surprised by the revelation of the doctor, who confessed that during medical school he was convinced that he had every disease he was studying. Don't we all? How can we be content if we are always gazing at the other options? Just when I think i have a great kitchen, i see what else i could have in it, or how it could change. There is more, there is always more. Let us not conform to the age.

"Truth is eternal, knowledge is changeable. It is disastrous to confuse them."
-Madeleine L'Engle
