Lip Balm is a hot commodity at out house. Everyone wants their own tube (which I am on board with because sharing lip balm is not cool), but we have a problem around our house (okay, maybe two problems).

Problem #1: The kids tend to lose theirs. With out fail I will purchase four brand new tubes of lip balm and within a day they are missing. It is quite frustrated, as you can imagine.

Problem #2: This problem is embarrassing to admit but here goes (no judgment), my younger boys eat lip balm!! (Not just their own but their siblings as well) The question “Why?” still remains unanswered. If you have the answer please let me know.

With these two problems we face, there is a never-ending battle. Here’s what I mean, I only buy lip balm with all natural products in them (instead of mainly petroleum and alcohol) which is more costly. It also creates friction between siblings because of one taking the others, or worse eating them!

I decided I was going to figure out if I could save money and have more tubes available to my family if I made my own. I did my research and found I could make 50 tubes for $0.68 EACH! I was very excited to know I could make my own “good for you” lip balm for $0.68 and have 50 tubes to share amongst the six members of our family.

I want to share my recipe, the products, and the process with you so you can save money and create something that is more healthy for your family. (In my list of ingredients I will share the brand of each item that I used so the cost matches, but you are free to use whichever brand you choose.)

After you gather your ingredients you will need to gather a few supplies.

You will need a large glass bowl and a double boiler.

What you do next is super easy and is a great opportunity for your children to help make their own lip balm.

Fill the bottom pot of the double boiler with water and place the top pot on the bottom. Place on the stove and heat at Medium to High heat.

If you are using a lip balm kit (like I mentioned) you will need to place the lip balm tubes into the tray at this point. You can use all 50 at one time or you can make less. There are instructions in the box on how to fill the holes if you make less than 50. The recipe that I have provided will make enough for 50 tubes.

Measure out all the ingredients (EXCEPT the essential oils) and place in the large glass bowl. Place the large glass bowl on top of the double boiler and mix with a whisk as it begins to melt.

When the ingredients are completely melted, remove the glass bowl from heat and quickly add the essential oil of your choice (this recipe calls for peppermint, but I’d like to try some others down the road, like orange or lime). Once you have added the essential oil mix again with the whisk.

You will need to quickly pour the mixture into the lip balm tray (with tubes attached) because it will begin to harden quickly.

Once you pour the mixture into the tray you will need to use the spatula to spread the mixture evenly.

You can let the tray sit at room temperature or you can speed up the process by placing it in the refrigerator. Let the tray and tubes sit until they harden.

After they harden you can scrape off any extra on top with the spatula. Then simply pop each tube out and place a lid on it.

Remember I said earlier that the kids would lose theirs or get them mixed up? This kit also comes with labels, so I made each child their own “name” label so they would know which one belonged to them. I also made some for me and my husband.

I have created a blank template for you to use in my free resource library (sign up for my weekly email for access). If you want to make labels with your family members name’s the template is a set up and ready for your use. I have provided two different labels. One is for the labels that come with the lip balm kit and the other is a template for Avery 6570 Labels.

I have been thrilled with this recipe for four reasons:

  1. It saves me money! You can’t beat $0.68 a tube of “good for you” lip balm.
  2. I have a stash of extras when someone misplaces theirs and I don’t feel bad about giving them another $0.68 tube!
  3. It makes my lips feel SO good and actually nourishes them.
  4. It holds up well in hot weather. A lot of DIY lip balms tend to get really soft and melt in the heat of summer. I have tested this one at the water park, at the beach, in my pocket, and in my purse and it does not melt or get too soft.

I would love for you to try it out and let me know what you think. I hope it will save you money and sanity just like it has my family.
