Football season cancelled for many in Wales after FAW meeting

The Football Association of Wales have today announced the cancellation of many leagues around Wales.

A remote meeting took place between the National League, Cup and Community Game Board to provide an update to clubs in Wales.

In the meeting they discussed the plans for the 2020/21 season, which has been decimated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The season was that competitive football below the men’s second tier will not take place this season until the Welsh Government restrictions are lifted and the situation of the pandemic improves.

It was decided that the FAW’s newest league, the Ardal Leagues would be cancelled, alongside the FAW Trophy and its reserve leagues.

In a statement from the Ardal Northern Leagues, they said: “With no start available for the leagues, it was agreed that the best option was to cancel the leagues and start again next season.”

It had been hopeful from the National Cup Board for all teams who wanted to participate to play in the Welsh Cup, however that has been limited to the top two tiers.

Many clubs had been vocal on social media on the refunds of fees due to competitive football not taking place.

The FAW that clubs will be entered into equivalent competitions free of charge for the 2021/22 season.

They will not need to pay a fee for the league season either, with player registration fees being discounted.
