A 13-year-old eighth-grader at Sandburg Middle School in Golden Valley has been suspended for trying to sell marijuana to other students and carrying a box cutter in his backpack.
The incident involving the New Hope teen occurred on Sept. 22, according to a Golden Valley Police report.
The boy was suspended from Sandburg and has been reassigned to homebound instruction for the remainder of this school year, Sandburg Principal Tom Henderlite said.
Henderlite said the box cutter was found when school officials were searching the boy’s locker and backpack, after he had been found trying to sell marijuana to other students.
The boy also had pages of gang information in his possession, Henderlite said.
The violation was the second for the eighth-grader, who spent 45 days at TASC last year for possession of a look-alike pistol weapon, Henderlite said.
“Our hope is that this young man will be able to work with someone in the district or at a local social agency who can help him,” Henderlite said. “He has a lot of things going in the wrong direction.”
Henderlite said the boy admitted he was trying to sell drugs to the two other students who were with him.
“The consequences for that are more severe than for possession,” he said.

Henderlite is going to let this hang on “hope”? – and “Someone in the community”?? Wondering if he went over to the kid’s house and had a little chit chat with the folks? Find out what kind of crap their into? It begins in the home.
In my day the school principal would have demanded my parents go down to the school and wouldn’t have released me until he had an old fashioned face to face with them. Sounds like the do-gooders in today’s administration will chalk this up to “their culture” and not confront the issue, or the parents, head on.

Have you ever spoken with Henderlite? He is really a great principal and is doing a fantastic job at Sandburg. You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. I do agree it starts in the home, and I believe in your home you teach kids “government bad, taxes bad, community bad”

I agree with 281careless, if you look for problems in the school district and life in general, you will find them. Worse yet is that your kids will start to see this as normal behavior.
If this 8th grader and the behavior/home issues was a rare case, I agree that the Principal could focus on resolving the issue. Unfortunately in that large diverse school there are a significant number of kids in the same situation.
This is why the district employs social workers and dependency counselors. Unfortunately since the vote no contingent does not want to fund the district and these programs, this 8th grader and their “at risk” peers will be left with only “hope” and not “help”. More thoughts at:
