Seneca is a great philosophical writer and stoic from the Roman era. His Letters are a classic of moral education and I’ve been reading them this past couple months (slowly). Here, comment on letter 12 (there are like 200).
The advice is great. Growing old can seem lame BUT:
– the party is at its peak just before it unwinds – very true. Fruits ripest before decay etc. Older age is prime time. We shall see I guess but a nice metaphor
– death is no more imminent when old than young – in neither case is it “tomorrow”. Good point. You still have today and look forward to tomorrow either way. The downsides of ailments and suffering – well you can get hosed either way by injury, illness, accident whatever.
