The fashion trends for SS’21

Whilst next year’s Spring and Summer fashion trends were showcased in September, I think now’s a good time to get the key trends from New York to Milan put on the radar, so you can do some serious hinting for your Christmas list or see what you can spot in the new year sales that you can restyle. What trend will you be wearing next year? There are 6 to watch out for:

The key 6 trends for SS’21 are:

  • All about the waist – show them off with belts or go bare with cropped tops
  • Prints – from head to toe in bright colour palettes
  • Elegant tunics – relaxed tailoring of two parts, dress over trousers
  • Textures – from the sheer ‘second skin’ to the 3D fabric surfaces
  • Voluminous trousers – high and low waisted with lots of fabric
  • Big shoulders – return of the pads. Step back to the 1980s and think power dressing

Waist wow factor

It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing trousers or skirts, show off your waist with a belt or cropped top. There are plenty of colours trends to choose from. Top tip: stay away from the crossbody bag so the waist can be seen clearly. Keep to shoulder or clutch bags.

P is for print

Don’t be fooled by the many monochrome looks spotted in the fashion shows. You have license to go bold and embrace the print from head to toe. Top tips: prints are in the bold colour palettes, don’t opt for pastels and your bag can feature more than one colour. Versace stood out from the crowd with this look.

Tasteful tunics

Not just the wardrobe staple of the Asian continent, tunics are a welcome addition to the spring and summer wardrobe; one of the many ways we have been shaped by 9 months of working from home in 2020. Options are available; with or without a belt, monochrome or print. Top tip: handbags work well and in the same tones as the outfit. Top marks to Dior who matched their bags to the tunic outfits seamlessly.

Tactile textures

From Molly Goddard’s ruffles at LFW to the many sheer and glossy smooth satins across the fashion shows, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Top tip: your bag should match the texture in your outfit. So if you are going sheer in a dress or top, keep your bag smooth. And if you’re going for 3D textures follow suit on the bag – a masterclass from Miu Miu.

Power pants

Trousers are full of volume starting from the waist down through the leg. With or without visible pockets, enjoy the extra fabric. And as you can see from these two fine examples, the top tip is to match your handbag in colour and in print, nailed by Isabel Marant!

Shrug it off

The shoulder pads are back (if you remember them first time around) with a nod to the 1980s! Don’t be shy and give yourself more presence. As you can see here courtesy of Chanel and Isabel Marant, combine the broadness of those shoulders with a cinched in waist. Belt up! Top tip, shoulder bag, handbag or clutch bag, no crossbody here.

You now know the 6 key fashion trends for Spring and Summer 2021, the styles, textures and prints and good news, your bag can be whatever shape or structure you like. There is one golden rule – match it to your outfit, don’t contrast it. Check out two other SS’21 fashion guides to complete your knowledge:
