Booted from Lab –oops!

Went into the lab today with Ria to practice for the check offs tomorrow.  It will either be Central Venous Catheter Dressing change (with Cardiac assessment) or Female Catherization with abdominal assessment.  (We get to flip a coin to see what we have to do so need to be prepared for both.)

I got booted from the lab because I wore flip flops.  I COMPLETELY forgot that I wasn’t supposed to wear open toed shows so I ended up having to go home to get sneaks and came back around 12:30 (half hour after I arrived the first time.)

We practiced the central line dressing first.  That was pretty easy.  We learned from some generic nursing student lab helpers that they were taught a different way to clean a central line.   So it seems they are teaching the generic students differently than the  AVS students.  (I’m not basing that assumption on this one instance there have been more instances.)    Anyway the central line was very easy.  I just hope I remember to label it with my initials and time and date at the end.

I practiced the female catherization too.  First I used an already open kit which had a larger sterile tray and did okay with that.  I understand it better now that Mr K explained stuff to me. I didn’t understand the diamond pattern draping of the female patient either.   He showed me how to properly drape a female patient for Foley catheter insertion.  So that was nice.  He also showed me how to keep everything sterile.  Something Mrs S didn’t do.  So I feel more confident now with these two procedures. I practiced also with my smaller foley kit which had a much smaller  tray in which to work.  But I feel okay about having the smaller tray.  I can do these check offs no problem if I just keep my wits about me.

Off to study cardiac assessment,  and abdominal assessment and to watch a video on male catherization.  (Which will be my learning assistant check off tomorrow)

Tip of the Day

When trying to remember anti-hypertensive drugs here is a goo way to remember:

ACE inhibiters are born in April and all end in “pril”
Beta blockers make us laugh they all end in “lol
Calcium channel blockers smell like pine because they end in “pine

************************************************************

Beta 1’s are for the heart because you only have one heart

Beta 2’s are for the lungs since you have two of those.
