Guide to Red-eye Flights

I hope for the rest of you all never have to experience a red-eye flight because let me tell you it can be pretty miserable. I’m currently at the airport writing this at 4 a.m. as I wait for my plane to board.

Let me tell you, today has been a Day. On top of dealing with all of the little things at home I had to pack and had more than 6 hours of travel just to get to the airport. I didn’t not sleep at all before hand and didn’t sleep for a while after my flight.

If you are going to a place with a smaller time zone shift, I would honestly recommend not sleeping depending on what time you are arriving so that you could fall asleep and wake up more adjusted to the new time zone. It is likely going to feel like a really long day but you won’t have as much trouble if any falling asleep (or at least I didn’t & haven’t).

Just a reminder, these tips are coming from a college student who is VERY used to getting few hours of sleep and occasionally pulling all-nighters.

Tips:

  • Caffeine will be your friends
  • Power naps can be very efficient
  • Wear comfortable clothes that you can still wear as normal street clothes for when you get to your destination

If you are used to getting sleep I would suggest you sleep. For those of you who plan to sleep on your flight here are my tips for you:

  • Try and get a window seat so you aren’t woken up
  • Dress comfortably so it’s easier to fall asleep
  • Bring items that you normally use when going to sleep (sleep mask, a certain blanket, essential oils, etc.)
  • Avoid caffeine like the plaque
  • An eye mask and earplugs might be a good investment
  • Eat something before you get to the airport or bring snacks because most if not all places will be closed
  • Set a quiet alarm to wake you up about 20 minutes before the plane lands so you aren’t woken up by the plane landing

Happy Travels!
