CDC monitoring flooding in Reg. 9; ready to deploy assistance

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is closely monitoring seasonal flooding that has affected several areas in Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) and stands ready to deploy resources and personnel if necessary.

According to a release from the body, thus far, no homes were directly impacted by the flooding but, sections of roads, bridges and savannahs have been flooded.

“It is noted that Guyana is currently within the annual May/June rainy season during which the National Weather Watch Center indicates that continuous rainfall is expected,” a release from the CDC said, adding: “Residents are encouraged to stockpile on potable water, food, health and hygiene supplies; avoid floodwaters and inundated areas, and observe weather patterns and at-risk areas.”

Meanwhile, the CDC urged the regional authorities in Region Nine, and all other administrative regions across Guyana, to be alert and activate their Regional Response Mechanisms as required and in keeping with their Regional Disaster Preparedness and Response Plan.

The CDC reminded that for emergencies and disaster reports, the CDC’s National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS) can be contacted on 600-7500, 226-1027, and 226-1114 or they can send a message on their Facebook, Instagram or Twitter accounts.
