Ex-Policeman Richard Persaud, 28, has been charged with a corrupt transaction and an arrest warrant has been issued for him.

Persaud resigned from the Guyana Police Force in August following allegations that he planted ganja at a

Superbet business in East Canje, Berbice.

Persaud, of Number 58 Village East Berbice, Corentyne, was absent when the matter was called at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Peter Hugh on Wednesday.

The New Room was informed he left the jurisdiction.

Persaud, who served for eight years, had denied the allegations leveled against him and noted that it was a plot to get rid of him as persons within the Force believed he leaked information of alleged corruption to the media about a high ranking member of the Police Force.

On August 5, 2019 Persaud tendered his resignation with immediate effect after he was transferred to the Tactical Services Unit in Eve Leary. He was transferred from the Reliance Police Station in East

Canje after the owner of the business accused him of planting drugs on his premises and demanding cash to cover up the matter.

According to Persaud, on July 20th, 2019, he and another rank went to the Superbet outlet to collect documents from the owner of the business in relation to a matter that was under investigation.

He had related that the reason for the visit to the business place was not to conduct a search but the other rank found something in the yard and informed the businessman and his wife of the discovery.

Moments later the owner of the business indicated that he has CCTV footage which shows him placing the illegal substance in the yard. As a result he was placed under close arrest and the following week he was transferred to the TSU where he was again placed under close arrest.

Hee said he felt he was being ‘victimized’ and he was never given an opportunity by the Guyana Police Force to prove his innocence, which he still maintains.

January 8th, 2020 was set for a report hearing on the matter.
