Fisherman confesses to killing Mahaicony businesswoman

A 27-year-old fisherman on Wednesday confessed to killing Mahaicony businesswoman, 56-year-old Bibi Nesha Shairoon known as ‘Shakeela’ during a home invasion in 2016.

Devanand Rampersaud of Berbice appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon charged with the capital offence of murder but opted to plead to the lesser count of manslaughter.

Persaud admitted that between October 15 -17, 2016 at Novar Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, he unlawfully killed Shairoon.

His attorney requested that a probation report is prepared for Persaud who will return to court on October 15 when he will be sentenced.

Persaud is charged jointly with a 16-year-old male of Good Faith, Mahaicony, who is said to be the mastermind behind the businesswoman’s murder.

Shairoon of lot 6 Novar, Mahaicony was discovered in her home by her nephew at about 6:00hrs with her hands and feet tied along with marks of violence about her body.

On the day of the incident, the News Room was told that the 16-year-old was arrested after neighbours informed the police that he and the businesswoman had a heated argument several days prior to her death over coconuts.
