Guyanese man charged in NY for murdering elderly roommate in fire

A Guyanese man was charged Wednesday night with setting the blaze that killed his elderly Queens New York roommate.

The New York Post reported that 49-year-old Rampersaud Persaud is facing murder and arson charges for allegedly killing 64-year-old Guyanese national Bibi Jasmin, at their shared home on 219th Street near 89th Avenue in Queens Village about 11 pm Tuesday.

Persaud allegedly started the fire on the 1st floor of the home.

Emergency responders quickly put out the fire, but Jasmin could not be saved.

The woman, who was a former security guard recently suffered a stroke and was wheelchair-bound.

She born and grew up in Dundee Mahaicony on the East Coast of Demerara before migrating to the United States.
