The Junior Chamber International (JCI), Ibadan Elite, has commenced the planting of 11,000 trees as it launched its Go Green project. The project, Nigerian Tribune learnt, is aimed at mitigating the harmful effects of climate change not just in Oyo state but in Nigeria as a whole.
It begins with the planting of one tree, then two, three and the number keeps going, the National Vice President south-west District 2, Olamipo Adeola, said as she emphasized the need to plant trees to help heal the earth.
“Over the years there’s been a lot of damages, falling of trees and we have a lot of climate change issues already. So, this year, we thought it was high time we prioritised healing the earth and saving the planet. The Go Green project is about going back to nature”, she told Nigerian Tribune after the launch which took place at the Gambari Forest Reserve on Monday.
For the 2021 President of JCI Ibadan Elites, Mr Toba Adeyeye, its a project which transcends the bounds of Oyo State. According to him, the 11,000 trees which would be planted on a 10-hectare space is part of about 100,000 trees JCI Nigeria plans to plant in 2021.
The national President, JCI Nigeria, Mr Abiola Olorunnisola, who was right on hand to break the ground for the tree planting, corroborated the position of Mr Adeyeye, saying that the national body has put every mechanism in place to ensure the project becomes hugely successful.
“Tree is a symbol for us. It reminds us of nature and the importance of climate and environmental protection. Trees and forests play an essential role in mitigating the impact of climate change. Planting trees is one of the most important things we can do to contribute to the health of the planet.
“Forests are the lungs of our planet, drawing in carbon dioxide and breathing out oxygen. And trees improve our lives both on a grand scale and at the local level.
Trees in urban areas filter the air and remove harmful particles. They also help to filter and regulate water, preventing flooding and protecting watersheds” the National President said of the motive for the project.
The Ibadan Elites 2021 President, reiterated that with the Go Green project and many others the organisation has initiated in the past, its commitment to a clean, safe and healthy environment as well as an egalitarian society, which is in tandem with the present Oyo state government’s plans, is totally unwavering.
Assistant Director, Forestry, Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, A.F Ariori, expressed happiness that JCI has embarked on the project, which, he said, would assist the state government in its drive to enhance vegetal cover and mitigate climate change.
“The reserve has been depleting for years without much replenishment. The future generations will curse us if we fail to plant but fall more trees”, Mr Oriori reminded every present.
For Mr Adeyanju Adeonipekun, Executive Vice President, JCI Nigeria, the impact would cut across all strata of the society as the rising temperature is doing presently.
“Tree planting is the solution to a better environment, better climate and to sustain humanity, most importantly”, he said.
