Protest rocks FULafia over insecurity and abduction of seven students

Published

on

Students at the Federal University Lafia (FULafia) in Nassarawa have taken to the streets of the state capital in protest after gunmen stormed an off-campus community.

Sources claim the gunmen stormed a student community close to the institution and possibly abducted some FU Lafia undergraduates.

The incident, it is understood, occurred at around 11 pm on Wednesday within the Gandu community in Lafia.

The state police command, when contacted, declined newsmen’s enquiry on the matter.

BBC, however, reports that as many as seven students of the institution are feared abducted.

Ibrahim Ismaila, president of FULafia’s student union, was quoted as saying abductions have become a regular occurrence in and around the university’s host community.

He said word came that some thugs were harassing and robbing students around Confidence Lodge in Gandu, prompting concerned individuals to invite security operatives.

“We went with security officials from the university and also invited soldiers who stormed the vicinity with their vehicles. But before we got there, the attackers had escaped,” Ismaila said.

“At night, we would get a call that gunmen had entered Gandu. They took about seven students from there. Two students who survived the attack had to hide in the ceiling.

“Things like this happen regularly in the university so that our state governor had to visit some weeks ago to discuss precautionary measures for insecurity.

“He spoke well but nothing has changed since. We’re still experiencing attacks. FU’s security crisis is now beyond the vice chancellor. Even he has done his best.”

The management of Ajayi Crowther University (ACU) in Oyo has expelled some students of the institution for beating their colleague to death over alleged phone theft.

In a now-viral clip, the expelled students were seen beating their colleague who was rolling on the floor while one of them can be heard shouting “harder, harder”.

The victim was also captured gasping for air as he became numb after he was beaten with sticks.

The incident occurred at a hostel known as Shepherd Inn on the school premises. The deceased was reportedly beaten from 6pm on Friday to 10am on Saturday.

In a statement by Femi Atoyebi, its spokesperson, on Sunday, the school management said it has handed all the students involved over to detectives in Oyo state police command for investigation.

In the statement, the private varsity also denied the viral claims that the students involved were members of a secret cult.

It also gave the assurance that justice would be served.

“Contrary to what is trending, the university affirms that there is no cultism in the institution, just as the university has zero tolerance for any sort of anti-societal vices and misconduct,” the statement reads in part.

“It is important to stress that the expelled students do not belong to any cult group.

“The university remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring a safe, conducive, peaceful and godly atmosphere for learning.”

A final year student in Ebonyi state university (EBSU), identified as Favour Ugwuaka, has reportedly ended her life.

In the news making rounds online, Favour was found dead behind her hostel at Ishieke campus in Abakaliki on Wednesday May, 22 after a poisonous substance suspected to be sniper.

According to Punch, the student from the Department of English passed all her courses but repeatedly failed a particular course, whose lecturer had allegedly vowed she would never pass.

In an emotional video airing online, it showed moment Favour’s grieving mom stormed EBSU campus with her corpse. Shouting and wailing in pain, she blamed the lecturer named Dr. Enyi for her tragic passing.

She could be heard calling out the lecturer’s name, revealing that he has successfully made her child commit suicide.

In her words, Dr. Enyi Chukwuka said he is the best, that nobody can teach like him, he graduated from UNILAG. He should come and carry my daughter who has committed suicide and bury her.

A voice note documenting the deceased lamentations few hours before killing herself showed that she paid N130k for the carry over course but still failed. She could be heard saying, ‘I go soon leave this school for una’, is it because I am not an indigene of Abakaliki”.

An EBSU graduate, Rex Nwome, claimed that the girl committed suicide because she had been failing the particular course repeatedly.

He said, “Favour was my classmate and a best friend to me in the English Department. The lecturer mentioned a did vow never to allow Favour to graduate”.

“You could imagine where she later passed all the courses except that lecturer’s that she had to pay another extra year tuition fee to rewrite”.

“Unfortunately the man failed her again. What resulted in this intense depression as the latest NYSC names that were recently shortlisted, and her name wasn’t there.”

“The girl suffered a lot of depression because she was only left wandering about the EBSU seeking help. She was very desperate to graduate and serve. This and many more of the disgusting stories resulted in this suicide mission”

“I wish she didn’t go this far to end her life. R. I. P Ugwuka Favour till we meet to part no more.”.
