‘I’ll never knowingly break any law’ — Obi speaks amid row over detention in UK

Published

on

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), says he has lived in a most law-abiding manner all his life.

His comment comes in the wake of his reported detention at Heathrow Airport in London by UK immigration.

On April 12, LP announced that Obi was harassed and detained by London immigration officials over alleged impersonation.

The party said Obi was questioned for a “long time” and that it took the intervention of Nigerians for him to be released.

“He was questioned for a long time, and it was very strange for a man who lived for over a decade in that country,” the party had said.

“The high implication of the offence is that the impersonator could be committing all kinds of weighty crimes and other dubious acts and it would be recorded in Obi’s name.”

UK immigration remained silent about the incident, and Obi did not make an official statement regarding the development for almost a week.

However, in a Twitter thread on Tuesday, the LP presidential candidate said although “humans make mistakes,” he has never “knowingly” contravened the law.

Obi added that he is “not afraid of the lies and propaganda against my person” and has always known that the “journey to a New Nigeria” would be tough.

He then reiterated the cause of “regaining my mandate” and “transforming Nigeria starting from the North to every part of the nation”.

“I never expected the journey to a New Nigeria to be an easy one. The forces, who had over the years, lived off the old order, are bound to fight back, as is being experienced now,” the tweet reads.

“If they come at us through land, air and sea, we will respond to them through land, air and sea but, we will remain law abiding and will never give up on the nation. We are on the right path and we will remain committed to the course.

“I reiterate my commitment to building a Nigeria that will be beneficial to every Nigerian. The struggle to reclaim this mandate is not about me as a person but, about millions of Nigerians who placed their trust in me through their votes.

“There may be more mud-slinging from those who are against the emergence of the New Nigeria but, I would never be deterred by the obstacles along the way to victory. I have always lived my life in the most law-abiding manner.

“Sometimes as humans, we make mistakes but, I will never knowingly break any law. I am therefore not afraid of the lies and propaganda against my person. They are part of the journey to a New Nigeria.”

Obi finished third in the February 25 presidential election and has disputed the poll’s results and tendered a petition to the election tribunal.

A Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Abubakar Mohammed Guri, the DC in office of COMPOL MOPOL, Force Headquarters, Abuja on Monday 3rd June, reportedly slumped and gave up the ghost.

Sources said the late DCP who was in his uniform, slumped on his seat in his office and was quickly taken to the Clinic inside Police headquarters for medical assistance, where he was confirmed dead.

No official reasons have been adduced for the death of the officer who was said to have looked hale and hearty and exchanged pleasantries with officers and staff of the Mopol department when he reported for duty

However, a source who spoke in confidence, opined that the senior officer’s sudden collapse and death may not be unconnected with heart failure noting that in recent times, many police officers out of fatigue have suffered the same fate, because they work round the clock, even at night, without rest

NOA to issue standardised version of reintroduced National Anthem

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) says it will issue a standardised version of the reintroduced national anthem.

On May 29, President Bola Tinubu signed a bill reintroducing the old national anthem.

However, there have been criticisms against the reintroduction of the anthem.

In a statement on Tuesday, Paul Odenyi, NOA’s spokesperson, said Lanre Issa-Onilu, the director-general of the agency, spoke after several versions of the anthem appeared on social media.

Odenyi added that the agency’s community orientation and mobilisation officers (COMOS) also reported citizens’ confusion with the correct lyrics and instrumental and audio rendition of the anthem.

“Our COMOS, whom we ordered to learn the new national anthem, have come up with the feedback that many of our people are eager to learn and promote the new anthem but are confused about which of the ones they find online is the correct version,” the statement reads.

“They have asked questions about which of the stanzas is the national prayer.

“The director-general also assured that a decision on whether any of the stanzas will be adopted as national prayer will be taken after the necessary approval procedure.

“He advised government agencies that seek to play the anthem at their functions to revert to the agency for the official copy of the new anthem.”

Edo guber: EFCC warns against vote buying, selling

Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has warned against vote buying and selling in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state.

The election will hold on September 21, 2024.

Olukoyede issued the warning on Monday during a town hall meeting on voter sensitisation in Ekpoma, Esan West LGA, and at the Famcoop Hall, University of Benin.

Represented by Williams Oseghale, assistant commander of the EFCC, the chairman said vote buying and selling are against the law.

He asked participants to also take the message to their friends, brothers, sisters and colleagues.

“Ignorance is not an excuse in law. That I don’t know is not an excuse. The law is against it. So stay away from it,” he said.

Citing the Electoral Act, he said any person who “buys or offers to buy any voters’ card whether on his own behalf or on behalf of any other person, commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction, to a fine not exceeding N500,000.00 or imprisonment not exceeding two years or both”.

Ochre Precious, executive director of YES Project Initiatives, who facilitated the programme, said the essence of the town hall meeting was to inspire youths to discharge their civic responsibilities by registering and casting their votes.

He said it was also aimed at discouraging trading in votes during the governorship election.
