FC Barcelona have appointed Hansi Flick as the club’s new manager.

The Spanish La Liga side announced Flick’s arrival in a statement on the club’s website on Wednesday.

The German coach signed a two-year deal to manage the club for two seasons.

“FC Barcelona and Hansi Flick have reached an agreement for the German to become men’s first team football coach until 30 June 2026,” the statement read.

“The new coach has signed a contract at the Club’s offices accompanied by FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta; first vice president responsible for the sporting area, Rafa Yuste and the Club’s sporting director, Anderson Luís de Souza, Deco.”

Flick’s appointment comes a few days after Barcelona sacked Xavi Hernandez from the role.

Xavi’s relationship with the club hierarchy broke down after his recent public criticism of Joan Laporta, Barcelona FC president.

The club severed ties with Xavi despite convincing him to reverse his decision to exit the Camp Nou just a few weeks prior.

Speaking on his new role, Flick said he was honoured to coach Barcelona and expressed his readiness to repeat the winning record he amassed at Bayern.

“It’s a big honour, a dream for me to sign my contract here. We won some titles with Bayern Munich and my hunger is really big for titles.

“I would like to stay on this path with Barcelona, and I think we can achieve a lot together, and this is an important thing.

“Their philosophy is similar to mine, with lots of possession and really attacking football and these other things I love.”

Flick, who won six trophies in a calendar year as Bayern Munich manager in 2020, is also the third Barcelona manager of German nationality.

Bayern Munich have confirmed the appointment of Vincent Kompany as the club’s new manager.

The Bundesliga side announced Kompany’s arrival in a statement on the club’s website on Wednesday.

The Belgian manager agreed to a deal that would see him at the Allianz Arena for three years.

“FC Bayern have confirmed Vincent Kompany as their new head coach. The 38-year-old has agreed to a contract with the German record champions through 30 June 2027. The former Belgium international most recently managed English Premier League club FC Burnley,” the statement read.

Managing the history-rich Bavarian team will be Kompany’s third job in his budding managerial career.

He had his first crack at management in 2020 when he became a player-manager at Anderlecht.

The former Manchester City captain then returned to England for a second time to handle Burnley for the 2022/23 season.

In his first campaign, he guided the Clarets to the EFL Championship title, earning them promotion to the English Premier League (EPL).

However, Burnley were relegated back to the Championship after just one season in the top flight.

Kompany replaces Thomas Tuchel, whose exit from the role was announced in February.

The club said both parties jointly decided to end their “working relationship” prematurely after a string of bad results that resulted in Bayern losing the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen.

Tuchel was, however, allowed to see through the 2023/243 season with the team.

PSG have not paid Kylian Mbappe his wages for April as well as a mega-bucks bonus amid a financial dispute between the club and the player as he prepares to leave the French champions, sources close to the talks told AFP on Wednesday.

PSG’s decision to withhold Mbappe’s salary is related to an agreement between the two parties made last year, at the start of the season, when the player accepted to waive part of a bonus due to him, the source said.

However, the source stated the talks between the club and the France captain were “relaxed” and that there was hope of reaching “a positive conclusion”.

“Everything is being sorted out,” the source said without confirming the amount of money due to Mbappe.

However, another source contacted by AFP said PSG had also decided not to pay Mbappe a bonus owed, meaning the amount of money in question totalled some 80 million euros ($86.8m), confirming figures reported by sports daily L’Equipe.

The same source said the club had decided not to make the payments without warning Mbappe and without an agreement being reached between the parties.

Neither Mbappe’s entourage nor PSG immediately responded when contacted by AFP for comment.

Mbappe’s contract expires on June 30 and he has already confirmed he will leave PSG after seven years, with Real Madrid expected to be his next destination.

The two camps admitted at the beginning of this year Mbappe had agreed to waive part of a huge bonus that was due to him in order to be reinstated to the PSG squad after he was frozen out of the team at the beginning of the season.

The total amount of these bonuses is between 60 and 70 million euros, according to a source close to the club.

Waiving that sum was seen as a way of Mbappe helping PSG recoup some money given that they will not receive a transfer fee for the 25-year-old when he departs.

However, another source said Mbappe did in fact receive that bonus in February.

Mbappe signed his last contract with PSG in 2022, a two-year deal worth some 72 million euros before tax.

On top of that there was a stratospheric signing-on fee of 150 million euros, to be paid in three instalments, and a loyalty bonus of 70 million euros for the first year and 80 million euros for the second year.

In addition, he would have received a further 90 million euros had he agreed to take up the option of staying for a third year, according to the daily Le Parisien.
