One officer was reportedly killed in a gun fight between the police and suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Akata, Oru East LGA of Imo state.

Michael Abattam, police spokesperson in Imo, confirmed the development in a statement yesterday.

Abattam said officers raided the camp of the IPOB members following an intelligence report that the group was planning to carry out an attack.

He said the head of the group and several members were killed.

The police spokesperson said three improvised explosive devices (IED, two pump-action guns, nine cartridges, one locally-made pistol and one Toyota Highlander SUV were recovered from them.

“Sequel to credible information by the command’s intelligence unit, revealing that some bandits suspected to be IPOB/ESN terror groups were seen mobilising to attack police formations and government installations in the state from their camp located at Akata in Oru East LGA of Imo State,” the statement reads.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command immediately, dispatched the command’s Special Forces and tactical teams led by the officer in charge of Operation Restore Peace, ACP EVANS E. SHEM to go and dislodged the bandits as a proactive measure to nip their planned attack in the bud.

“On approaching the terror camp, the teams were attacked by the terror groups. Save for the Armoured Personnel Carriers and sophisticated weapons used by the police the bandits were overwhelmed and they scampered for safety into the bush. The head of the group and others were neutralized during the attack”.

“On their way back unknown to police teams that the bandits have reinforced and regrouped laying ambush using palm tree logs to block the entire exit paths in the bush.

“It was at the fourth blockade that the police teams came under heavy attack while removing the fourth palm tree log used in blocking the exit path.

“The bandits threw petrol bombs and Improvised Explosives Devices (I.E.Ds) at the police vehicles. Again, the tactical teams successfully dislodged the bandits where several of them were neutralized and others fled into the bush with bullets injuries. Unfortunately, one of the police Hilux vehicles was burnt due to the petrol bombs thrown at it.

“Also three police officers sustained bullet injuries and were rushed to the hospital. One of them died on the way while the other two are in stable condition undergoing treatment in a government hospital.

Abattam said officers are “combing the bush for possible recovery of more arms and improvised explosive devices”.

Sources said the late DCP who was in his uniform, slumped on his seat in his office and was quickly taken to the Clinic inside Police headquarters for medical assistance, where he was confirmed dead.

No official reasons have been adduced for the death of the officer who was said to have looked hale and hearty and exchanged pleasantries with officers and staff of the Mopol department when he reported for duty

However, a source who spoke in confidence, opined that the senior officer’s sudden collapse and death may not be unconnected with heart failure noting that in recent times, many police officers out of fatigue have suffered the same fate, because they work round the clock, even at night, without rest

NOA to issue standardised version of reintroduced National Anthem

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) says it will issue a standardised version of the reintroduced national anthem.

On May 29, President Bola Tinubu signed a bill reintroducing the old national anthem.

However, there have been criticisms against the reintroduction of the anthem.

In a statement on Tuesday, Paul Odenyi, NOA’s spokesperson, said Lanre Issa-Onilu, the director-general of the agency, spoke after several versions of the anthem appeared on social media.

Odenyi added that the agency’s community orientation and mobilisation officers (COMOS) also reported citizens’ confusion with the correct lyrics and instrumental and audio rendition of the anthem.

“Our COMOS, whom we ordered to learn the new national anthem, have come up with the feedback that many of our people are eager to learn and promote the new anthem but are confused about which of the ones they find online is the correct version,” the statement reads.

“They have asked questions about which of the stanzas is the national prayer.

“The director-general also assured that a decision on whether any of the stanzas will be adopted as national prayer will be taken after the necessary approval procedure.

“He advised government agencies that seek to play the anthem at their functions to revert to the agency for the official copy of the new anthem.”

Ola Olukoyede, chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has warned against vote buying and selling in the forthcoming governorship election in Edo state.

The election will hold on September 21, 2024.

Olukoyede issued the warning on Monday during a town hall meeting on voter sensitisation in Ekpoma, Esan West LGA, and at the Famcoop Hall, University of Benin.

Represented by Williams Oseghale, assistant commander of the EFCC, the chairman said vote buying and selling are against the law.

He asked participants to also take the message to their friends, brothers, sisters and colleagues.

“Ignorance is not an excuse in law. That I don’t know is not an excuse. The law is against it. So stay away from it,” he said.

Citing the Electoral Act, he said any person who “buys or offers to buy any voters’ card whether on his own behalf or on behalf of any other person, commits an offence and shall be liable on conviction, to a fine not exceeding N500,000.00 or imprisonment not exceeding two years or both”.

Ochre Precious, executive director of YES Project Initiatives, who facilitated the programme, said the essence of the town hall meeting was to inspire youths to discharge their civic responsibilities by registering and casting their votes.

He said it was also aimed at discouraging trading in votes during the governorship election.
