Senator Isah Misau was on Tuesday granted bail on self-recognition after he was arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on an amended 10-count charge bordering on forgery and other related offences.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) senator, who represents Bauchi Central senatorial district, was arraigned before Justice Anwuli Chikere.

The judge granted the prayer of counsel to Misau, Uchena Ogbunabo, who held brief for Mr. Paul Erokoro (SAN). He had asked that the senator be granted bail on self-recognition.

Granting the prayer, the judge however ordered that the defendant deposit his passport with the Chief Registrar of the Court, adding that Misau was at liberty to apply for the passport anytime he needs it.

The trial judge later adjourned the matter until January 21 for hearing.

Earlier, counsel to the Federal Government, from the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Mr. Saleh Hadi, had as the matter came up on Tuesday, told the court that the charges filed against Misau have been amended.

He told the court that he had affixed seal as ordered by the court on the last adjourned date on the amended charges. He then prayed that the charges be read out to the defendant to allow him take his plea.

The charges were consequently read out to the defendant and he pleaded not guilty to the amended 10 counts preferred against him.

The defence counsel soon after Misau made his plea urged the court to grant the defendant bail on liberal terms and on self-recognition. The request was not objected to by the prosecutor.

Misau was earlier arraigned on November 7 for this matter, the case was however adjourned after the counsel to the defendant pointed out an irregularity in the proceeding.

He had then argued that because there was no seal on the amended 10-count in line with Order 10, rules 1,2,3 of the Federal High Court, that it was defective.
