Who is Susan B. Anthony

Susan B. Anthony Biography

Susan B. Anthony was an American social reformer and women's rights activist. She was born in 1820 and grew up in a Quaker family in upstate New York. She began her activism in the abolitionist movement, working to end slavery. She later became a leader in the women's rights movement, advocating for women's suffrage, or the right to vote, and for women's equality in all areas of life.

Anthony was a key figure in the American women's suffrage movement, along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and others. She and Stanton formed the National Woman Suffrage Association in 1869, and Anthony traveled extensively, giving speeches and organizing events to raise awareness and support for women's suffrage.

In 1872, Anthony was arrested for voting in the presidential election, as at that time it was illegal for women to vote. She was found guilty and fined $100, but her case helped bring national attention to the issue of women's suffrage. The 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, was passed in 1920, 14 years after her death.

Anthony also advocated for other social reforms such as property rights for married women and the rights of workers. She was also a leader in the temperance movement, which sought to prohibit the sale and consumption of alcohol. Susan B. Anthony died in 1906, but her legacy and impact in the women's rights movement is still recognized today and celebrated annually on the Susan B. Anthony Day.
