a daily breath...

A thought du jour, my daily breath includes collected and conceived observations, questions of life, fortune cookie philosophies, reminders, messages of peace and simplicity, unsolicited advice, inspirations, quotes and words that got me thinking. They may get you thinking too . . .

Mondays are just young Fridays

After an absence of a week or so, Monday arrives announced like you didn’t know it would happen.

Lost in a delightful weekend of doing exactly what you wanted, at times you simply forgot the days and date and treasured the time you were allowed.

Then Monday morning, like right now, you come to the stark realization that the weekend is over and it is time to do what is required instead of whatever you want.

Yes, there are duties and obligations specific to this day and you managed to put aside routine for a day or two, but didn’t you always know Mondays would arrive, as Mondays do?

Grab a coffee (or tea) and get on with the day!

moderation

And June has come, as it always does, six

months along, and solstice soon. A swift

transition of time and temperature, the

month of balance holds longer days and

nights less dense, urging condign repose

or moderation. We move further into yet

another year, efficiently making the most

of warm winds and positive vibrations.

Summer advocates familiar moods and

memories. You may occasionally check the

rearview mirror, though June is a greater

opportunity for looking forward. It is not

what is behind you, but what lies ahead.

recognizable

The ever-shifting familiarity becomes more evident with each early morning step.

Where I am is not where I was a few days ago but is now this day’s reality. Recognizable, like home should be. It is a pattern as much as a promise.

Here I am walking the same route to the same coffee shop I frequent each morning. Step by step I will get there.

Where I am is a little more obvious than who I am, yet that may change throughout the day.

I'm like a pencil;
sometimes sharp,
most days
well-rounded,
other times
dull or
occasionally
broken.
Still I write.

disarming actualities

As if this prose would disappear
like acid rain, last week’s paycheque,
or the Ford Pinto.
I will undoubtedly forget or move on
to a new concern, overlooking recurring
supermarket mass shootings, a fentanyl
crisis, or cautionary tales as society
remains as calm as it is corrupt.
We seem to reliably take advice from
televangelists with Brylcreem-slick
schemes or deleterious demagogues,
   while ignoring the poet
         who speaks ostensibly
        not of spring,
               but of the dread instead.
The patina of the words dull in
perpetuity and still they attempt to
sum up happenstance emotions
caught within disarming actualities.
They, poets or society itself, cannot
      know any better when speaking
         of so much worse.
