A 19-year old Accounting student of Chinhoyi University of Technology, Zimbabwe, Rumbidzai Thelma Mupatsi, had purportedly given birth by herself in a bathroom on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 and subsequently poured boiled water on the baby who died immediately.
Mupatsi who was said to be in her first year after carrying out such an heinous act had allegedly put the remains of the dead baby in a suitcase with awaiting the best moment to thrash it.
Thelma is said to have been apprehended by a school warden following a tip off before she had dumped the baby’s corpse, a report by My Zimbabwe dislosed.
According to sources, Mupatsi was impregnated by a 49-year-old Chinhoyi businessman who denied being responsible for the pregnancy. This must have prompted her to devise some other risky measures to get rid of the baby.
However, it was learnt that a female student who heard Mupatsi groaning from the bathroom had gone to check upon her only to discover that she was seriously bleeding although she insisted that it was normal monthly period issues.
A source identified as Mole said, “She missed the college bus I guess as she intended to terminate the pregnancy. She was however heard groaning in the bathroom by another girl who had missed lectures that morning.
“When the girl knocked on the bathroom door and asked what the problem was, Thelma insisted that she was having period pains. The girl however saw a lot of blood flowing in the drain – a sign that she was bleeding profusely prompting her to alert a warden. She still insisted that she was having period pains when the warden asked what the problem was.”
Meanwhile, another source had revealed the speculations that the murderer must have taken some pills to induce labour so she could commit the crime inside the bathroom.
“It seems she then gave birth and poured boiling water on the baby before wrapping it with her linen. She was caught at the gate by the warden when she was asked to open the suitcase,” another source speculated.
Furthermore, another student had revealed how the heartless mother of the dead child had deceived them by telling them she had fibroids when her stomach was increasingly getting bigger.
“Thelma had earlier told us that she had a growth in her tummy which had caused her stomach to bulge. She was however acting weird this semester to the extent that she had distanced herself from friends.
“Two weeks ago she went home where she also told her parents that she had fibroids. We were actually together on Monday but she looked really stressed and I could tell something was wrong,” another student said.
While denying murdering her baby, she said, “I didn’t kill the baby and it wasn’t an unwanted pregnancy like what people think. I gave birth to the baby but it died.”
