Podium for Conway at Super Sebring

Kent’s Mike Conway bagged himself a podium in the 1000 Miles of Sebring at the weekend.

  • Mike was in action in both the FIA World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship
  • In a busy weekend, the 1000 Miles of Sebring opened the 2022 FIA WEC season, with Mike and the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing team lining up from P7 on the grid
  • The team progressed to the podium places in the opening hours of the race
  • Unfortunately, a crash for team mate José María López ended the #7’s race at the halfway mark before Mike could start his stint
  • Gearing up for the IMSA race, Mike and the #31 Action Express Racing crew started P2 on the grid after a scintillating qualifying session
  • An action-packed race followed, with the team continuously in the fight for the podium places
  • As the race drew to a close, they crossed the line to claim third place and their first podium of the season

Speaking at the end of another successful weekend, Conway said:

“In WEC, that was obviously not how we wanted to start our season. It is pretty frustrating because we were looking forward to a solid result. We didn’t have the pace to win but we had enough to be on the podium and that was the aim.”

“I was gearing up to drive just as the incident happened so I didn’t get any laps. It’s a pity but thankfully the car is strong and José is okay; that’s the main thing. Incidents like this can happen in endurance racing. The car can be repaired for Spa when we’ll pick up our season and push for a much better result.”

“The IMSA race was an exciting one, there was lots going on all the way through and we were locked in some pretty tight battles throughout. The podium was the aim and I’m very pleased we got there – well done to all of the team for their hard work. There’s a bit of a break now before the next endurance event at Watkins Glen but I’m already looking forward to it.”
