Switzerland’s First Mosque celebrates 50 years in Zurich

50 years ago, the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Pakistan’s Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan, inaugurated the mosque in the residential district of Balgrist in Zurich.

The Mahmoud Mosque – the oldest in Switzerland – was inaugurated June 22, 1963 in Zurich.

This Saturday, local Ahmadiyya Muslim Community invites the public to an open house in the presence of political and religious representatives.

The official ceremony of the Jubilee takes place in a hotel at the other end of the city, in the Altstetten district.

The community says the mosque – a cube-shaped building with two floors and 18 meters high minaret – will remain be open to the public throughout the day.

50 years ago, the President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Pakistan’s Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan, himself an Ahmadi, inaugurated the mosque in the residential district of Balgrist.

The mayor at the time, Emil Landolt, had attended the event.

The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was founded in 1889. On the reformist persuasion, it is not recognized by the Muslim orthodoxy. Pacifists, members reject hatred and violence based on religion.

Hearty greetings and congratulations to all the members of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of the beautiful country of Switzerland, gathered together in Mahmoud Mosque on its historic day of June 22, the 50th year of its completition/inauguration in 1963 by Hazrat Sir Muhammad Zafrullah Khan, the then President of UN General Assembly and who was the most fortunate, blessed companion of the Promised Messiha, Hazrat-e-Aqdus Mirza Ghulam Ahmad of Qadian, Masih-e-Mauood, Alaihissalam. Alhamdolillahey Rabbilalameen. May God Almighty help bless you all and enables you and your future generations, to construct more such beautiful Mosques in at least ten big cities of Switzerland during the next 50 years, by the grace of God, InshaAllah.
