Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said that the conviction of Rahul Gandhi by a Surat court in a defamation case was erroneous and that it will be challenged in a court of appeal.
Rahul Gandhi was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in a defamation case over his ”Modi surname” remark. The trial court has given a 170 page judgment and the Congress party is preparing to file an appeal against the order of conviction.

Due to his conviction, Rahul is likely to face disqualification from the Lok Sabha as the Supreme Court had in 2013 passed a verdict that any MP or MLA will be disqualified from the time of his conviction if a sentence of two or more years of imprisonment is pronounced against him.
The Congress party is hopeful of getting the erroneous judgment stayed and ultimately quashed.
