HINES EARL KENETH (P)

Duquesne, Pennsylvania. 28/12/1903. – Oakland, California. 22/4/1983.

Detto anche “Fatha” il padre del pianismo moderno. Figlio d’arte, il padre ha fatto parte della Eureka Brass Band, la madre pianista gli ha impartito le prime lezioni di piano. Ha debuttato professionalmente a Detroit nel 1918 in gruppi poco conosciuti, nel 1920 si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha avuto subito un impegno importante con l’orchestra di Carrol Dickerson. In seguito ha suonato con Erskin Tate, poi nel 1927 con Louis Armstrong e poi con Jimmy Noone. L’anno successivo ha organizzato la propria orchestra, che ha avuto una importanza storica nella storia del Jazz, essendo la prima grande orchestra bop della storia. Purtroppo di essa non ci restano documenti poiché all’epoca permaneva lo sciopero discografico. Ha diretto la sua orchestra sino al 1948, l’anno in cui ha partecipato al Festival di Nizza con Louis Armstrong, con il quale ai tempi di Chicago aveva registrato la celebre serie di dischi degli Hot Five e Hot Seven. Nel 1952 ha lasciato Armstrong ed ha suonato sempre con suoi gruppi. Ha affrancato il pianoforte dalla sola funzione armonica e ritmica, portandovi quella melodica. E’ stato il primo a dare al piano il fraseggio di uno strumento a fiato, lo stile “trumpet”, adattandolo al suono della tromba di Armstrong. Ha creato esecuzioni stupefacenti, di una forza ritmica, armonica e improvvisativa ancora oggi insuperate. Straordinario nelle esecuzioni dal vivo resta ancora oggi il “Fatha” del pianismo Jazz.

Ha iniziato a studiare il clarinetto a undici anni ed il sax alto nel 1951.Nel 1952 lasciata la scuola ha iniziato a lavorare nelle territorial band. Nel 1958 si è trasferito a Las Vegas dove è entrato nel gruppo di Billy Eckstine e fino al 1975 è stato titolare al sax baritono dell’orchestra fissa del Hotel Sahara. Nell’ottobre del 1977 ha sostituito Jimmy Forrest nell’orchestra di Count Basie, con la quale ha registrato diversi dischi e fatto varie tourèe internazionali. Alla fine degli anni ’90 ha collaborato con Thad Jones, con Frank Foster e Grover Mitchell. Ha registrato anche con Buck Clayton. Oltre a suonare i diversi sassofoni ha anche suonato il flauto e i vari tipi di clarinetto.

Fratello del più celebre Terumasa, ha esordito nel 1963 ed ha suonato in diversi gruppi, tra i migliori della terra del sol levante. Nel 1978 è andato negli Stati Uniti dove ha suonato con JoAnne Brakeen, con Uugh Masakela, Joe Henderson e Gary Bartz. Nel 1980 è tornato in Giappone dove ha diretto un suo gruppo. In seguito sempre in USA ha diretto il “Terumasa Hino’s Asian Jazz All Stars”. Ha collaborato con Aki Takase, Nobuyoshi Ino, Dizzy Gillespie, Eddie Gomez, Pat Metheny, Jean-Luc Ponty, Billy Harper, John Faddis, Gary Peacock, John Scofield, Kenny Kirkland ed latri. Ha registrato con Dave Liebman, Mike Stern, Steve Swallow. Nel 1992 è tornato in patria per esibirsi nei club di Tokyo. Ha collaborato spesso anche con il fratello.

Ha impara a suonare la tromba a nove anni e a tredici ha suonato nella base militare americana di stanza a Tokyo. Il suo debutto ufficiale è nel 1964 con Hiroshi Watanabe, poi ha suonato con Takao Kusagaya, Jiro Inagaki, con Toshiko Akiyoshi nel 1965 e con Hideo Shiraki. Nel 1967 ha inciso come leader, è come coleader nel gruppo Hino-Kikushi Quintet. Nel 1968 ha fondato la”Swing Journal Jazz Workshop 1″, ha registrato con Sadao Watanabe. Dalla metà degli anni ’70 ha suonato e registrato in Giappone, in Europa ed in USA con Joachim Kuhn, Richard Beirach, Makanda Ken McIntyre, Hal Galper, Carlos Garnet, Bob Degen, Gil Evans, Carter Jefferson, Sam Jones, Mal Waldron, George Russell, John Scofield, Elvin Jones e Bob Moses. Ha fatto parte come il fratello dell’Asian Jazz All Stars, è andato in tournée in Europa con Eddie Harris, ha suonato e registrato con Onaje Allen Gumbs, Jay Anderson, Michael Carvin. Il suo nome Hino significa”ardente di fuoco interno”e difatti non vi è nessuna altra tromba non americana ad avere tale forza espressiva. Stilisticamente legato al primo Don Cherry, musicista dalla espressività libera.

Soulsinger particolarmente votato alle ballads, nelle quali inserisce spesso ed improvvisamente delicati ed agonizzanti falsetti. Ha iniziato la carriera come cantante di gospel con il Chosen Gospel Quartet, poi con la Spirit of Menphis Quartet. Il produttore Don Robey lo ha invitato ad interpretare delle melodie del repertorio più commerciale ed ha iniziato a registrare per l’etichetta Peacock Records e nel 1963 ha inciso un album che ha avuto un certo successo. In seguito ha continuato su questa strada ottenendo una serie di successi repentinamente interrotti dalla sua morte.

Ha studiato prima il violino, poi ha suonato il basso tuba nell’orchestra della Wendell Phillips High School. E’ passato al contrabasso ed ha iniziato la carriera con Eddie South. Ha suonato poi con Erskine Tate nel 1932. Dal 1933 al 1936 è tornato con South. Ha raggiunto la notorietà nelle file dell’orchestra di Cab Calloway con cui é rimasto diversi anni. Nel 1939 è passato con Lionel Hampton. Ha inciso anche con Buck Clayton, Teddy Wilson, Eddie Mallory, Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins, Donald Byrd, Herb Ellis, Bob Brookmayer, Ida Cox, Quincy Jones, Jay Jay Johnson, Helen Merrill, Elvin Hines, Benny Goodman, P. Horton, Art Odes. Bassista moderno meno noto al grande pubblico ma apprezzatissimo dai musicisti per la sua precisione e la sua sicurezza.

Dal 1960 al 1964 egli ha fatto il pianista e a 26 anni ha iniziato a suonare il flauto studiandolo al Royal Conservatory al The Hague. Nel 1966 ha suonato con il bassista Boy Edgar e con Dick van der Capellen. E’ andato a studiare al Berklee School of Music e nel 1969 ha registrato a suo nome. Ha partecipato al Festival Internazionale del Jazz di Montreaux, ha messo su il suo Chris Hinze Combination con il quale gira l’Europa. Ha trasportato nel jazz delle composizioni barocche. Ha registrato con Jaasper van’t Hof, Joachim Kuhn, Michal Urbaniak, Louis van Djik, Charlie Mariano ed altri. Alla fine degli anni ’80 ha mostrato interesse alle musiche indiane, tibetane e di altre culture asiatiche. Flautista olandese preminentemente di jazz-rock. E’ stata uno dei solisti di flauto europei e non ad assimilare gli insegnamenti di Eric Dolphy.

Termine che deriva da “hipi”, che significa “aprire gli occhi”. Negli anni venti è stato utilizzato per indicare personaggio particolarmente in gamba. Indica anche persona competente, esperto conoscitore, intenditore. Da questo termine sono derivati: hipster o hipcat. Gli hipster hanno creato un loro gergo reso popolare da Cab Calloway che ha pubblicato il suo Hipster Dictionary.

Pianista e pittrice, ha studiato all’Accademia d’Arte di Lipsia. Negli anni ’40 ha iniziato ad interessarsi di jazz. E’ una delle poche musiciste tedesche ad interessarsi del Jazz. Dopo aver studiato privatamente, ha ottenuto il primo lavoro nell’orchestra di Jock de Molenaar nel 1946. Ha suonato poi Paul Martin nel 1949, con Hans Koller nel 1951. Nel 1953 ha diretto un suo quintetto a Francoforte. Nel 1955 è andata negli Stati Uniti dove ha diretto un trio insieme a Peter Ind e Ed Thigpen. Ha suonato anche con Dexter Gordon, con Bobby Jaspar e ha registrato con Zoot Sims. Si è esibita al Basin Street insieme a Jack Six e Frank Isola. Musicista originale, in seguito si è dedicata più alla musica commerciale.

Ha studiato danza e canto alla High School of Performing Arts, dove ha scoperto la musica di Ornette Coleman e di Bela Bartok. Nel 1970 ha lavorato in una compagnia del teatro sperimentale a San Francisco, dove ha imparato le tecniche vocali. Nel 1972 si è trasferita ad Amsterdam in Olanda ed ha lavorato con gruppi locali. Tornata a New York entra in un gruppo di jazz vocale diretto dal pianista e compositore Kirk Nurock. In seguito ha lavorato con Joel Forrester, Phillip Johnston, Jerome Cooper, John Zorn ed latri. Nel 1993 ha lavorato a Berlino con Sven Ake Johnsson e Wolfgang Fuchs nella libera improvvisazione. Ha registrato con i Five Voices, gli X-Communication, la September Band, con BUtch Morris, con Martin Shultz e Hans Kock e con Joseph Celli e Jim Hi Kim.

Compositore di operette e commedie musicali, è stato una delle figure più note del mondo artistico di Broadway nel periodo a cavallo della prima guerra mondiale. Ha studiato al City College di New York ed è andato a studiare anche al Conservatorio Sten di Berlino in Germania. Tornato negli Stati Uniti dal 1906 ha iniziato a lavorare come pianista per case editrici ed a comporre musica.

Ha iniziato l’attività con nel 1976 con la Joffrey Ballet Company e dal 1977 al 1979 ha collaborato con Mose Allison. Nel 1980 ha fatto parte del quintetto di Red Rodney, ha suonato poi dal 1981 al 1985 con Ira Coleman, dal 1986 al 1989 nell’orchestra di Tochiko Akyoshi e dal 1987 al 1980 anche con Bennie Wallace. Ha diretto il trio “Etc” insieme a Fred Hersh e Steve LaSpina dal 1988 al 1991. Ha anche collaborato con Michael Formanek, con Harold Danko, con il quartetto di John Abercrombie e Andy LaVerne, nel trio di Marc Copland e Dieter Ilg dal 1992 al 1995 ed anche in trio con Loose Cannon, Tim berne e Michael Formanek. Ha suonato con altri leader come Lan Xang, Dave Binney, Donny McCaslin, Scott Colley, Bob Belden, Vic Juris, Steve Slage, Dave Striker, Jin Snidero, Warren Bernhardt, Jay Anderson e Paul Bley.

HIRST GEORGE, FREDERICK. (TP)

Emigrato negli Stati Uniti nel 1921, nel 1925 ha suonato con l’orchestra di Al Mitchell, con Phil Napoleon. Ha registrato con la Enoch Light’s Orchestra in Francia. In seguito ha suonato in Germania con Julian Fuhs, Oscar Joost, Merek Weber e molti altri, lavorando per la etichetta Ultraphon dal 1929 al 1931. Ancora in Francia ha registrato con Fred Adison, Django Reinhardt, Stephane Htappelli, Lud Gluskin, Hubert Rostaing ed latri. Nel 1950 è tornato in USA dove ha diretto la Rhode Island Philarmonic Orchestra nel 1963. Si è ritirato lasciando l’attività nel 1975 a vivere in Florida.

HIRT AL (TP)

Egli ha descritto la sua musica : popolare, un dixieland errante ed in effetti nella sua attività trentennale ha interpretato le arie popolari di tutto il mondo. Dopo aver seguito degli studi classici al Conservatorio di musica di Cincinnati dal 1940 al 1943 ha iniziato la carriera nelle orchestre di Tommy Dorsey e di Jimmy Dorsey. Tornato a New Orleans si è dedicato completamente al dixieland. Ha guidato un suo gruppo nel quale suona anche Pete Fountain e nel 1960 ormai è celebre in tutti gli States, con il suo dixieland molto commercializzato. In seguito ha voluto rientrare nel jazz puro aprendo anche un suo club il “501 Bourbon Street”a New Orleans. Resta per diverso tempo nella sua città partecipando a diverse edizioni del New Orleans Jazz And Heritage Festival e girando anche diversi films. Nel 1983 è stato costretto a chiudere il club preoccupato dalla criminalità creatasi nella città ed ha deciso di trasferirsi a New York dove ha diretto un quartetto ed ha fondato una casa discografica : la “ProJazz”ed ha ottenuto le licenze su importanti registrazioni di diverse importanti case discografiche. Ha anche inciso con Harry Shield, Pete Fountain e Roy Zimmerman. Nel 1987 si è esibito davanti al Papa eseguendo l’Ave Maria di Handel. La sua musica è andata sempre più assumendo un carattere esclusivamente commerciale. Si dice che abbia regalato una tromba a Wynton Marsalis bambino. Nel 1991 è tornato a suonare in una ricorrenza con latri musicisti a New Orleans al suo ex Bourbon Street Club ora “Jelly Roll’s”

Fratello del più celebre Al. Ha suonato con la New Orleans Philarmonic Symphony Orchestra dal 1941 al 1942. Dopo durante il servizio militare ha suonato nella banda del corpo dal 1942 al 1946. Nel 1947 ha suonato con Louis Prima ed ha fatto parte di molti gruppi a New Orleans dal 1948 al 1950. Ha smesso la carriera di musicista per altre attività, tornando a suonare solo nel 1960 nel gruppo del fratello e registrando anche con lui nel 1965.

HISEMAN JON, PHILIP JOHN. (DR)

Ha iniziato a studiare il violino ed il pianoforte e alle scuole superiori la batteria. E’ diventato professionista a 18 anni facendo le prime esperienze in gruppi pop e rock, di Graham Bond, Georgie Fame e John Mayall sino al 1971. Ha iniziato a lavorare in gruppi jazz , con Mike Taylor, John Dankworth, Neil Ardley, con la New Jazz Orchestra, Howard Riley, Pete Lemer, con i Colosseum. Nel 1971 ha suonato in Germania con Wolfgang Dauner, con i Tempest dal 1973 al 1974 e con il Colosseum II dal 1975 al 1978. E’ membro fondatore della “United Jazz & Rock Ensemble”, nel 1979 con la Parapherlania un gruppo diretto dalla moglie Barbara Thompson. Nel 1992 ha fatto parte della Sans Frontieres, ha ricostituito il gruppo Colosseum nel 1994, ha registrato su una sua etichetta la TM Records.

HIS MASTER’S VOICE (HMV)

Etichetta discografica. Il marchio rappresentato dal cane Nipper sul grammofono è diventato uno dei marchi più conosciuti al mondo. Dipinto da Francis Barraud è stato acquistato dalla Gramophone Company nel 1899 e in seguito usato dalla compagnia discografica Victor and Monarch negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1910 la HMV l’ha usato come etichetta in Inghilterra. Questo ha costituito una cosa importante per la compagnia, tanto da sostituirne lo stesso nome, la Gramophone Company è diventata la His Master’s Voice. Le sue prime incisioni identificate per jazz sono state quelle della James Reese Europe’s Society Orchestra for Victor del 1913, pubblicate in USA. E’ iniziata una tradizione durata sino al 1950 per la quale il materiale della Victor è stato distribuito in tutto il mondo dalla HMV. Ad eccezione della Gremania dove essa è sussidiaria della Electrola, in Francia dove diventa “La Voix de son Maitre”, in Italia “La Voce del Padrone”e in Spagna “La Voz de su Amo”. Negli anni ’50 ha ristampato materiale del catalogo della RCA Victor, sino alla cessione della licenza alla RCA ed alla EMI nel 1957. Nel 1960 dalla sua produzione è scomparso il jazz ed è stata dedicata completamente alla musica classica.

HIT OF THE WEEK.

Etichetta discografica nata nel febbraio del 1930 a New York in seno alla Durium Products Corporation. E’ stata usata per i dischi stampati solo da un lato. Prodotti dalla Durium im materiale sintetico erano venduti a prezzi bassi. Il catalogo conteneva musica da ballo ed il suo successo è stato momentaneo, poiché dato il materiale scadente si deterioravano subito, anche perché male usati con attrezzature scadenti. Questa produzione è cessata nel marzo del 1931 e a maggio è stata ceduta alla Irvin-Wasey Advertising Agency, che ha continuato l’operazione sino al giugno del 1932.

HITCHCOCK NIGEL, GLEN. (SA)

Ha iniziato a studiare il sax alto all’età di otto anni ed a 11 anni ha fatto parte della National Youth Jazz Orchestra diretta da Chris Hunter, che è stato anche il suo ispiratore e maestro. Nel 1988 ha anche registrato con la stessa orchestra. In seguito ha suonato con Tony Kinsey, Tony Cromie e Jack Scarpe. A sedici anni è andato a Londra dove ha iniziato la carriera vera e propria ed ha lavorato con Guy Barker, Itchy Fingers, Claire Martin, Lourence Cottle, Clark Tracey ed altri.

HITE LES, LESLIE LEROI. (LEA)

DuQuoin, Illinois. 13/3/1903. – Santa Monica, California. 6/2/1962.

Ha iniziato la carriera accompagnando la cantante Helen Dewey. Trasferitosi a Los Angeles ha lavorato con i fretelli Spikes Howard nel 1925, con Papa Mutt Carey, Curtis Mosby, Vernon Elkins, Tin Can Allen, con Louis Armstrong nel 1930. Ha diretto una sua orchestra al New Sebastian’s Cotton Club di Los Angeles per diverso tempo, con la quale ha accompagnato anche Fats Walzer nel 1935 ed ha partecipato a vari film. Alla fine degli anni’40 ha lasciato la musica per diventare impresario e agente di spettacoli vari. Ha avuto nelle fila della sua orchestra, Lionel Hampton come batterista, Dizzy Gillespie e Walter Gil Fuller come arrangiatore.

Dal 1955 ha diretto vari suoi gruppi, con i quali ha accompagnato musicisti americani di passaggio come Stan Getz, Oscar Pettiford, Jan Johansson, Brew Moore. Ha partecipato a molte manifestazioni internazionali e nel 1963 ha vinto una speciale classifica dei musicisti danesi.

HO FRED, HOUN WEI-HAN. (SB-FL)

Palo Alto, California. 10/8/1957.

Musicista americano di origine cinese, è cresciuto a Amherst nel Massachussetts, dove ha iniziato a studiare il flauto all’età di nove anni. A quattordici anni ha iniziato a suonare il sax baritono, ha studiato per due anni con Archie Shepp. Ha frequentato la facoltà di sociologia all’Università di Harvard lasciando la musica. Nel 1978 finita l’università ha ripreso a suonare e nel 1980 si è trasferito a New York. Dal 1981 al 1984 ha suonato con Charlie Persip, con la Shepp’s Attica Blues Big Band dal 1986 al 1988. Ha diretto anche un suo gruppo l’Afro-Asian Music Ensemble, gruppo che comprende musicisti di varie nazionalità ed anche di varie culture musicali.. Dal 1988 ha usato il soprannome di Ho al posto di Houm e nel 1994 ha suonato con la Jon Jang’s Pan-Asian Arkestra. Ottimo strumentista ed anche buon compositore, la sua musica risente l’infuenza di Charles Mingus e del primo Archie Shepp, soprattutto per quel desiderio di impegno sociale e politico del quale loro sono i massimi rappresentati, ma anche della moderna African-American dance mucìs e del funk e hip-hop. Spesso ha introdotto nelle sue esibizioni strumenti della sua tradizione etnica. Ne risulta comunque una musica di grande valore (anche non volendone condividere le tesi) che oltre a rivolgersi alla grande tradizione si sottrae ad ogni approssimazione. Tuttavia il baritonsassofonista è profondamente radicato nella vera tradizione del jazz. Solista aggressivo, molto disinvolto.

Ha iniziato a suonare la tromba a 11 anni ed anche altri strumenti. Nel 1974 è andato a studiare al Berklee College of Music, si è diplomato nel 1978. Doppo aver assistito ad un concerto di Gary Burton ha deciso di suonare il vibrafono. Ha frequentato l’Università di Miami, dove ha studiato vibrafono e composizione. In seguito è andato a Denver dove ha studiato dal 1982 al 1983 alla University of Northen Colorado di Greenley ed ha avuto il suo primo gruppo gli Steve Hobbs and Friends dal 1984 al 1988. In seguito ha suonato con Spike Robinson, con Joe Bonner. Nel 1988 è ritornato a Raleigh per insegnare nelle scuole, ha messo su un piccolo gruppo ed ha lavorato freelance. Ha accompagnato il cantante Giacomo Gates nel 1991, poi Kenny Blake, Don Friedman, James Spaulding, Chuck Israel, nel 1995 Julian Priester e dal 1995 al 1997 Greg Abate. Musicista radicato nel jazz senza mezzi termini, sia per il suo modo di suonare e sia per la scelta dei suoi partners. Nel 1998 è stato definito dalla “Bmg All Music Guide To Jazz ” uno dei primi dieci vibrafonisti del mondo. Solista godibile e convincente, pienamente a suo agio nei brani d’atmosfera, ma soprattutto in quelli dove può mettere in campo la sua grande velocità di esecuzione che si accoppia naturalmente con una notevole rapidità di pensiero.

Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte classico a sei anni ed in seguito a scuola ha provato a suonare anche altri strumenti musicali. Nel 1975 si è trasferita ad Urbana nell’Illinois seguendo il padre che insegna in questa Università. Egli ha continuato a studiare il pianoforte privatamente ed in seguito frequentando l’Università nel 1978. Ha completato gli studi anche in composizione è stato membro dell’orchestra dell’Università sino al 1984 ed ha diretto un suo gruppo. Nel 1988 si è trasferito a Chicago dove ha suonato con Edward Petersen dal 1990 al 1994 ed ha diretto il “Trio New” insieme a Paul Wertico. Ha collaborato anche con il bassista Eric Hochberg, con Brian Torff. Ha suonato con Lee Konitz, Bob Mintzer, la cantante Rebecca Paris, Larry Coryell. Dal 1995 ha lavorato come pianista, direttore e produttore con Kurt Elling, per il quale ha composto una suite “The Beauty of The Things”registrata nel 1996. In seguito ha scritto anche una suite per solo piano e chamber orchestra “In Your Own Way”dedicata a Dave Brubeck presentata alla Università dell’Illinois.

HOBO.

Originariamente con tale termine venivano indicati i soldati dell’esercito sudista che alla fine della guerra di Secessione tornando alle loro case e trovando solo rovine hanno dovuto adattarsi a lavorare nelle piantagioni e nei campi di cotone che fino ad allora era stato solo un lavoro da neri. In seguito lo stesso termine ha indicato la figura del vagabondo. Esiste una lunga tradizione degli “Hobnes” che saltavano sui treni merci, approfittando dei momenti nei quali essi rallentavano per spostarsi da un luogo all’altro senza pagare. Il primo ad utilizzare questo termine in una incisione è stato Louis Armstrong, che ha inciso l’8 dicembre del 1932 il brano “Hobo, you can’t ride this train”.

HOBO JUNGLE.

Termine per indicare una bidonville. I luoghi dove si radunavano gli hoboes per nascondersi e proteggersi dall’arriva della polizia.

Ha registrato con Greg Osby, Lonnie Plaxico, Jim Pepper, Ron McClure, Don Friedman, Joey Calderazzo, Ed Schuller, Leni Stern, Jeff Andrews. E’ stato coleader del gruppo “West End Avenue”.

E’ cresciuto a Richmond in Virginia ed ha iniziato a suonare il sassofono a 11 anni ed ha 15 anni ha iniziato l’attività freelance. Nel 1957 su è trasferito a Boston dove ha lavorato negli studi. All’inizio degli anni ’60 ha registrato con Phil Wilson, ha suonato con Mitch Seidman, Harvie Swartz, Alan Dawson. Ha collaborato con Kai Winding, Al Haig, Phil Woods, Kenny Clarke, Brew Moore, Charlie Barnet e Herbie Mann. Nel 1963 ha smesso l’attività ed ha aperto un noleggio di strumenti musicali con il quale ha avuto molto successo. Nei primi anni ’90 ha venduto l’azienda per priprender a suonare.

Musicista molto colto, ha studiato all’Università di Musica e Belle Arti di Graz in Austria e al Conservatorio di Brema. Ha debuttato nel gruppo Joe Viera-Ed Kroger una delle prime orchestre tedesche di musica contemporanea alla fine degli anni’60. Poi nel quartetto di Irene Schweitzer, negli anni’70 ha suonato con il Jazztrack, poi con il chitarrista Toto Blanke nel New Electric Circus. Ha diretto un suo gruppo i Crossing. Ha anche suonato con Charlie Mariano, Norma Winston, Stu Goldberg, Attila Zoller. Ha partecipato a numerose manifestazioni europee.

HODEIR ANDRÉ.

Parigi, Francia. 22/1/1921.

Musicista diplomatosi in armonia e contrappunto al Conservatorio di Parigi nel 1947. Alla fine degli anni’30 ha scoperto il Jazz e ha suonato il violino con il nome di Claude Laurence. Ha suonato con Andrè Ekyan, Django Reinhardt, Kenny Clarke, Don Byas, James Moody, con Bobby Jaspar con il quale ha fondato il”Jazz Groupe de Paris” con il quale ha eseguito sue composizioni e arrangiamenti. Nel 1954 è stato pubblicato un suo saggio “Hommes et problemes du Jazz” che lo consacra il creatore della critica jazzistica francese. E’ stato capo redattore della rivista Jazz Hot dal 1947 al 1950. Tra gli altri suoi scritti “Le Jazz Cet Inconnu”, “Introduction a la musique du Jazz”, “Les formes de la musique”, “Les mondes du Jazz”. Ha collaborato nel Cinema dove ha scritto diverse colonne sonore, ha composto anche per il Modern Jazz Quartet. Nel 1965 ha scritto sù testi di Joyce “Anna Livia Plurabelle” e nel 1972 “Bitter Ending” Critico e profondo conoscitore di musica, è senz’altro il più autorevole della seconda generazione.
