MOODY JAMES (ST)
Savannah, Georgia. 26/3/1925. – San Diego, California. 9/12/2010.
Figlio d’arte, il padre ha suonato la tromba nell’orchestra di Tiny Bradshaw. Egli ha iniziato gli studi musicali nei primi anni della seconda guerra mondiale, a sedici anni ha studiato il sax alto per passare poi al tenore. Dopo l’impegno con l’esercito dal 1943 al 1946, nel quale ha fatto parte della banda militare, ha trovato il suo primo importante ingaggio con l’orchestra di Dizzy Gillespie. Venuto in tournée in Europa, si è impegnato prevalentemente al sax alto e nel 1949 ha registrato una versione di “I’m In Ther Mood For Love”, che ha ottenuto un grande successo di vendite e di critica. Nel 1951 si è stabilito a New York dove ha diretto un suo gruppo ed ha inciso per la Argo. L’alcoolismo lo ha portato a dover sospendere l’attività ed affrontare le cure di disintossicazione. Nel 1962 ha ripreso l’attività, ha studiato il flauto, ha registrato “Battle Of The Saxophones” insieme a Gene Ammons e Sonny Stitt, ha lavorato con Kenny Barron, Chris White, Rudy Collins ed ha effettuato diverse tournée in Europa ed in Estremo Oriente. Dal 1962 al 1969 è tornato con Dizzy Gillespie, nel suo quintetto. Si è stabilito a Las Vegas, dove ha lavorato negli alberghi e nei casinò. Nel 1975 ha avuto una scrittura allo Sweet Basil di New York, ha registrato con Ernie Royal, Kenny Clarke, Dexter Gordon e Al Cohn. In seguito ha fatto attività freelance e ha diretto altri suoi gruppi. E’ stato considerato un ottimo sideman, è riuscito sempre ad ottenere degli ottimi ingaggi, ha suonato ed inciso anche con Tad Dameron, Al Haig, Howard McGhee e Milton Jackson. Ha diretto i “Modernist”, gruppo che suona un mid bop robusto e organico. Nel 1949 il cantante King Pleasure ha realizzato una trasposizione canora del suo assolo di ”I’m in the mood for love” del 1949, disco che ha avuto molto successo. In seguito Eddie Jefferson ha rifatto tale operazione con altre due sue composizioni e tale sodalizio si è protratto per diversi anni sempre con successo. Sassofonista pieno di swing e flautista molto dolce e abilissimo, non ha avuto il successo che meritava anche per una crisi di identità dovuta al fatto di lavorare su diversi strumenti. Personaggio di spicco del bop, sassofonista influenzato inizialmente da Lester Young ed in seguito ha subito l’influenza di John Coltrane, mentre al sax alto è stato un parkeriano. Flautista elegante e originale. Colpito da un tumore al pancreas che ha rifiutato di trattare in modo aggressivo. Due mesi dopo la sua scomparsa ha vinto un Grammy Award per l’album postumo “Best Jazz Strumental”.

Da adolescente ha suonato il pianoforte in una Chiesa Battista e ha accompagnato con il flauto il cantante di blues Willie Dixon. Mentre frequenta il New England Conservatory di Boston ha suonato nella “James Tatum’s Blues Band”. Nel 1971 è entrato nel “Black Music Ensemble” di Cecil Taylor. Ha messo su un suo gruppo il ”Muntu”, ha lavorato nello studio “Rivbea” di Sam Rivers e nel 1977 ha inciso il suo primo album. Ha suonato anche con Khan Jamal, Dennis Charles, Ed Blackwell, Fred Hopkins.

Pianista e buon direttore di orchestra degli anni ’50 e ’60. Ha studiato a Brooklyn alla John Laws School ed ha frequentato la New York University. E’ entrato nell’orchestra di Jimmy Dorsey, che ha dovuto lasciare perchè richiamato dall’esercito nella seconda guerra mondiale. Congedato ha fatto l’arrangiatore freelance a Hollywood, ha lavorato con Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Peggy Lee e Billy Eckstine. E’ stato il direttore della Mercury Records sino al 1960, dove ha collaborato con Sarah Vaughan, Ernestine Anderson, Dinah Washington, Helen Merrill, Nina Simone. Attivo nel campo dello swing e della musica commerciale, è stato uno dei primi ha sviluppare l’idea dell’orchestra affiancata da un coro, in particolare il “Gene Lowell Singers”.

Paterson, New Jersey. 14/3/1911. – Fort Lauderdale, Florida. 12/5/1975.
Cieco di nascita anche se tale grave menomazione non gli ha impedito a sei anni di iniziare a suonare il pianoforte e cantare alla radio insieme al fratello Dan. Dal 1929 al 1931 ha iniziato a suonare la fisarmonica ed ha scrivere degli arrangiamenti per diverse orchestre, ha lavorato per Frank Dailey, Paul Whiteman e Larry Clinton. E’ stato per 18 mesi ricoverato in seguito ad un serio incidente di auto del quale ha subito le conseguenze sino al 1943. In seguito ha diretto un quartetto swing a New York dal 1946 al 1949, gruppo che è stato indicato dalla critica come una delle più brillanti formazioni del momento. Ha lavorato con Buddy Rich, con Ella Fitzgerald, con la Sauter/Finegan Orchestra. Dalla fine degli anni ’40 ha suonato principalmente l’organo in Florida, con un suo gruppo, con Johnny Smith, ha lavorato come arrangiatore specie per complessi vocali, tra i quali quello dei Modernairs. Strumentista perfetto e cantante delicato, morbidamente jazzistico, alla Johnny Mercer.

Ha frequentato l’Università in California ed ha iniziato la carriera di cantante. Si è esibita nei migliori club e nei teatri. Dal 1955 al 1956 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Buck Clayton, con il quale ha anche inciso dei dischi per la Columbia. Da leader ha esordito con una incisione per la Debut, album nel quale è accompagnata da John La Porta, Wally Cirillo o Alonzo Levister, Tal Farlow, Pscar Pettiford e Osie Johnson. Cantante dalla voce profonda, dal timbro fascinoso, dalla intonazione perfetta, che aveva colpito ed impressionato Charles Mingus. Purtroppo dopo lunghi anni di studio e di apprendistato per motivi sconosciuti ha lasciato le scene musicali, si dice che si sia dedicata alla pittura e a scrivere dei racconti per l’infanzia. Personaggio molto attivo nella Salvation Army di New York.

Ha iniziato a lavorare da professionista nel 1925. Ha fatto parte dei tour di diversi spettacoli dal 1926 al 1929. Ha suonato con l’orchestra di Gene Coy a Dallas dal 1929 al 1930. Poi con Jesse Stone, con Jap Allen e nel marzo del 1931 con Blanche Calloway, con la quale ha anche registrato. Nella metà del 1934 si è trasferito a New York dove ha suonato con Jack Butler, poi con Maurice Rocco, Hot Lips Page, Charlie Johnson, con Tiny Bradshaw nel 1939, con Fats Waller nel 1940, Coleman Hawkins, Horace Henderson, dal 1941 al 1942 con Ella Fitzgerald, dal 1942 al 1946 con Benny Carter, con Louis Armstrong, Lucky Millinder, Rex Stewart. Ha anche registrato con Dizzy Gillespie, Herbie Fields ed ha partecipato al film Stormy Weather del 1943. Ha continuato da essere attivo negli anni ’50 con la reunion band di Fletcher Henderson e con il Puddinghead Battle negli anni ’60.

Natio da una tribù indiana, nel 1924 si è trasferito a Blue Island nell’Illinois, dove ha studiato la tromba ed il trombone ed in seguito è andato a studiare la musica in California. Ha debuttato nel 1935 con Lionel Hampton, poi nel 1936 ha suonato con Eddie Barefield. A New Orleans ha suonato con Papa Celestin, Kid Rena, A.J.Piron, Joseph Robichaux, Paul Barbarin, Ernie Fields, Harlan Leonard e dal 1939 al 1941 con Noble Sissle.Ha fatto parte del gruppo di Louis Armstrong, con il quale ha preso parte anche al film “New Orleans”del 1946. Nel 1949 con Sidney Bechet al “Jimmy Ryan”di New York e al Festival International de Jazz di Parigi. E’ tornato con Bechet dal 1950 al 1951, ha suonato poi con Ruby Braff, Pee Wee Russell, Tony Parenti, Eddie Condon, Wild Bill Davison, ha fatto un tour europeo con Mezz Mezzrow nel 1953 ed è rimasto a lavorare in Francia. Ha fatto un tour con la All Stars di Louis Armstrong dal 1964 al 1965. Nel 1973 ha inciso come leader, poi nel 1977 con Cozy Cole e nel 1981 ha fatto un tour in Inghilterra.

Ha suonato con i California Ramblers nel 1924, ha fatto parte dei “Five Birmingham Babies” e dei “Goofus Five”tra il 1924 ed il 1925 e con i “Lumberjacks”. Per un lungo periodo è stato con l’orchestra di Bern Bernie e poi con Don Voorhees, Bert Lown, Lester Lanin, con Jack Pettis nel 1928, con Irving Mills nel 1929, i Dorsey Brothers nel 1931, con Fred Rich. Ha anche lavorato con orchestre alla radio e negli studi di registrazione. Nel 1937 con Ted Lewis.
MOORE BILLY, WILLIAM JR. (G-P-ARR)
Parkersburg, West Virginia. 7/12/1917. – Copenaghen, Danimarca. 28/2/1989.
E’ stato il successore di Sy Oliver come arrangiatore nell’orchestra di Jimmy Lunceford dal 1939 al 1941. Musicista dalle ottime capacità, soprattutto come arrangiatore. In tale ruolo ha lavorato per Charlie Barnet, Buddy Rich, Jam Savit e Tommy Dorsey. E’ stato il direttore musicale del gruppo vocale delle Peter Sisters negli anni ’50 epoca nella quale hanno raggiunto il massimo della popolarità, specie in Europa. Ha accompagnato anche un altro gruppo vocale, quello dei Delta Rhythm Boys. Dal 1960 si è stabilito prima in Germania e poi in Danimarca dove ha continuato a scrivere ottimi arrangiamenti ed a dirigere vari gruppi. Musicista ma soprattutto arrangiatore che ha creato delle orchestrazioni molto vivaci e ingegnose.

Ha debuttato a sedici anni al Teatro Apollo di Harlem in un concerso di dilettanti nell’orchestra di Willie Bryant. Ha ottenuto un ingaggio al “Black Cat” di New York e successivamente è entrato nell’orchestra di Count Basie. Nel 1938 ha suonato con Hot Lips Page, con Jimmy Mundy e con Benny Carter. Nel 1940 ha dovuto abbandonare l’attività per seri disturbi psichici.

Si è stabilito a Menphis dove ha suonato con il gruppo dixieland di Fred Ford nel 1938 e con Will Stump. Nel 1943 si è trasferito a New York dove ha suonato con Claude Thornhill nel 1948, poi con Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Gerry Mulligan, Kai Winding, Howard McGhee, Machito, ha fatto parte dei “Brothers” di Woody Herman, insieme a Getz, Sims, Cohn e Eager. Ha fatto parte insieme a Warne Marsh del gruppo di Lennie Tristano, ha suonato con Tony Fruscella. Ha trascorso un periodo nella West Coast, poco soddisfatto del lavoro ha deciso di cercare maggior fortuna in Europa nel 1961. Ha suonato maggiormente in Danimarca, ma anche in Svezia, Norvegia, Germania, Polonia. Si è esibito al al Blue Note di Parigi con Kenny Clarke, poi anche al Cafè Montmartre di Copenhagen. Dopo una breve collaborazione con Buddy DeFranco è rientrato in Danimarca per restarci. Nel 1972 per una caduta per le scale del famoso locale Tivoli, è rimasto infermo e poco dopo è morto. Alunno di Tristano, molto legato agli orientamenti dal suo maestro. Tenorista molto vicino a Young.

Gruppo vocale e strumentale formatosi nel 1986. E’ nato da una idea del pianista Sanford Moore in occasione di un concerto, il gruppo è formato da Yolande Bruce, Ginger Commodore, Connie Evingson e Dennis Spears. Ha avuto successo ed il gruppo ha continuato ad agire soprattutto nella area di Minneapolis, ha continuato ad avere successo ed ha ottenuto dei premi e riconoscimenti vari ed ha partecipato a degli eventi importanti. Nel loro repertorio figurano anche molte canzoni famose di Broadway ed Hollywood.

Ha debuttato accompagnando la cantante Ruth Brown, quindi ha suonato con Quincy Jones al Teatro Apollo di Harlem a New York. Ha fatto un tour con Paul Williams, ha fatto parte dei Jazz Messengers di Art Blakey, poi con l’orchestra di Count Basie nel 1966, dal 1968 al 1972 con la Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, con l’ottetto di George Coleman nel 1972. Ha collaborato con Johnny Hammond, con Aretha Franklin nel 1971, nel 1973 ha partecipato al Montreux Jazz Festival con Oliver Nelson, è stato con DIzzy Gillespie, con Charles Earland, con Al Grey, con Frank Strozier nel 1976, con Pharoah Sanders nel 1981, con Hank Crawford dal 1983 al 1984. Ha diretto un quintetto con Gary Bartz, Harold Mabern, Jamil Nasser e Louis Haynes al Village Vanguard nel gennaio del 1992. Ha iniziato a cantare nel coro della New Home Baptist Church a cinque anni. Ha frequentato la Jackson State University. Ha messo su il gruppo vocale dei “Poppies” ed ha registrato con la Coumbia. Cantante dalla voce da contralto bruno e ansioso, con aperture sulle note acute dal contrasto cromatico molto equilibrato, che dà particolare sostanza e senso drammatico alle sue ballads. Interprete dall’ampia estensione e dalla vocalità maestosa, piena di sensualità.

Mentre frequenta le scuole suona il pianoforte nei club e dopo essersi laureato all’Università di Oxford nel 1957 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Vic Lewis, con il quale è andato negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1960 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di John Dankworth e per diverso tempo ha diretto un suo trio con Colin Purbrook e Kenny Clare, con il quale ha lavorato a Londra e nel 1963 a New York ha avuto una parte in teatro. E’ iniziata per lui una nuova carriera di attore nella quale ha avuto un grande successo. Ha continuato di rado a suonare con un suo trio, ma soprattutto ha composto anche musiche per film, per balletti e per la televisione.

Cantante di rhythm and blues con radici nel gospel affermatosi a Chicago negli anni’40. Artista dalla voce briosa e piena di swing. Ha iniziato a proporre un blues irriverente e quasi claonesco. Maturando è divenuto una delle voci nere urbane più importanti. Colpito da una crisi mistica diventa il Reverendo Moore, predicatore nella chiesa God in Christ, cantante di gospel e attrazione principale in spettacoli religiosi.

La sua vera scuola sono stati i club. E’ stato un assiduo frequentatore di jam session. Ha suonato con John Coltrane di passaggio allo Jazz Workshop. Ha debuttato con il cugino Merl Saunders, poi ha suonato con i Mastersounds dei fratelli Montgomery, ma soprattutto si è messo in luce nel gruppo di Dewey Redman nel 1966. Ha fatto un tour nel Vietnam con la cantante Barbara Virgil nel 1968, ha lavorato in Europa dove è stato il batterista di casa al Montmartre Jazzhus di Copenhagen, ha suonato con Dexter Gordon. Nel 1970 è tornato negli Stati Uniti, ha suonato dal 1971 al 1974 con Stanley Turrentine, dal 1974 al 1977 con Sonny Rollins, ha anche registrato con Woody Shaw, Bennie Wallace, Benny Carter, John Handy, con Red Garland nel 1978. A San Francisco con Bobby Hutcherson, ha diretto un suo gruppo e ha suonato freelance, ha registrato con Peter Sprague nel 1983. Ha suonato con Russell Baba, con Michael White. E’ restato in attività nella zona di San Francisco, con il suo gruppo ”Space Shuttle Omnibus” si è esibito in molte manifestazioni importanti Batterista molto legato al mainstream, pur non disdegnando di sconfinare nel free jazz, nel jazz-rock o fusion.

Ha iniziato a suonare la batteria a 12 anni in compagnie di musicisti girovaghi, che si esibiscono nelle fiere e nei minstrel show. E’ stato il batterista fisso in un teatro di Birmingham nell’Alabama, dove ha accompagnato le cantanti Ida Cox, Ma Raney e Bestie Smith e ha lavorato nei cinema di film muti. Ha lasciato Birmingham al seguito dello show “Charleston Dandies”in un tour al sud e all’Havana. Si è fermato a St. Louis dove ha suonato con Charlie Creath nel 1927, ha lavorato al Savoy di Detroit. Arriva a New York dove ha lavora con Eubie Blake, con Wilbur Sweatman dal 1928 al 1931, ha fatto un tour con King Oliver dal 1931 al 1932. Nel 1933 ha messo su un trio con Pete Brown e Don Frye che terra in piedi sino al 1937, con il quale si è esibito al Victoria Cafè di New York e con John Kirby all’Onyx Club. Ha suonato con Lem Johnson, Art Hodes, con Sidney Bechet nel 1945, con Wilbur DeParis nel 1952, con Bob Wilber e Conrad Janis. E’ venuto in Europa prima con Milton Mezz Mezzrow e poi con Sammy Price, ha suona anche con Tony Parenti nel 1968 e con Roy Eldridge. E’ stato per l’epoca un grande batterista e soprattutto un ottimo suonatore di washboard.

Ha iniziato a lavorare nel 1922 a Londra come freelance, pianista nei cinema, nei club tra i quali allo “Sherry’s” dal 1925 al 1926, all’”Empress Room” nel 1927, allo “Chez Rex Evans nel 1933, al “Bag o’Nails” nel 1934, al “43 Club”nel 1935 ed al “Mema’s”dal 1935 al 1939. Ha suonato con Buddy Featherstonhaugh nel Southsea, con Adelaide Hall al Floria Club dal 1940 al 1942 e nel 1944 al Nut House. In seguito ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Max Geldray in Germania nel 1947, nel 1949 a Parigi con Carlo Krahmer e da solo al Palm Beach Hotel di Cannes. Ha collaborato con Harry Gold e Laurie Gold dal 1954 al 1957. E’ stato il pianista del transatlantico Queen Mary e ha continuato ad esibirsi in club alla moda.
MOORE GLEN (B)
Portland, Oregon. 28/10/1941.
Dopo aver studiato il pianoforte a 13 anni ha optato per il contrabasso e a 14 anni ha iniziato a lavorare. Dopo un breve periodo di studi a Copenhagen si è trasferito a New York dove ha suonato con Ted Curson, poi con Jake Hanna, con Zoot Sims ed altri. Nel 1967 ha registrato con Nick Brignola e ha fatto parte del Paul Bley Synthesizer Show dal 1969 al 1971. Ha avuto una collaborazione con il “Paul Winter Consort”ed ha partecipare alla nascita del gruppo “Oregon”. Nel 1976 ha registrato in duo con Larry Karush e nel 1979 è arrivato il primo album da leader. Ha insegnato all’UCLA, all’Università di Miami e al Naropa Institute di Boulder nel Colorado. In seguito ha fatto parte dl gruppo di Rabih Abou-Khalil ed è stato membro del trio cooperativo il “Mokave”e nel 1987 ha collaborato con Nancy King, ha inciso in trio insieme a Jerry Granelli e alla cantante Annabelle Wilson nel 1990. Bassista conosciuto soprattutto per le sue numerose sortite cameristiche.

Fratello del chitarrista Oscar Moore. Nella metà degli anni ’30 si è trasferito in California dove con il bassista Eddie Williams e Charles Brown che ha guidato un trio il “Three Blazer, sul modello di quello di Nat King Cole, nel quale suonava con successo il fratello. Ha fatto parte di gruppi cooperativi che con la sua guida sono stati molto popolari ed hanno lavorato in numerosi club, continuando a gestire il suo trio, nel quale nel 1948 il pianista cantante Billy Valentine ha sostituito Brown. Nel 1950 il trio ha registrato con il cantante e pianista Floyd Dixon. Nel 1953 è tornato Brown ed il gruppo è stato attivo sino alla fine degli anni ’50.

Moglie del tenorsassofonista Al Cohn. Voce che è la copia salottiera di quella di Billie Holiday. Dal timbro di contralto che riesce in certi momenti a ricreare il pathos del suo grande modello, specie nei brani lenti. Ha lavorato per diverso tempo con l’orchestra di Charlie Barnet.

Figlia del sassofonista Teddy Hill e della cantante di rhythm-and-blues Bonnie Davis. Ha studiato ala Newark Arts High School di Newark nel New Jersey ed è stata incoraggiato dal patrigno a studiare il pianoforte. Dopo la laurea ha lavorato come insegnante di musica, in seguito ha deciso di iniziare la carriera di cantante nel 1967 ed ha partecipato al musical “Hair”. Nel 1970 ha vinto un Tony Award per la migliore protagonista di musical.

Ha debuttato in una registrazione con Jimmy Linceford nel 1942. E’ rimasto con Lunceford sino al 1945 e nel 1947 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Lucky Millinder. Nel 1948 e nel 1950 ha suonato con Duke Ellington, nel 1951 con Kay Winding. In seguito si è spostato nella West Coast dove ha suonato in gruppi di rhythm-and-blues. Tornato a New York ha suonato con Charles Mingus nel 1964 e con lui ha partecipato al Festival Jazz di Monterey. Ha suonato con Thelenious Monk, con Gil Fuller a Monterey, ha registrato con Gerald Wilson a Los Angeles, ha registrato al violino con Bobby Bryant nel 1969. Ha continuato ad essere attivo sia in gruppi jazz che in gruppi di rhythm-and-blues. Ha partecipato al Johnny Otis Show.

Ha debuttato ufficialmente con Don Albert nel 1936, nel 1949 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Dizzy Gillespie, nel 1950 di quella di Fletcher Henderson, dal 1950 al 1952 con Lucky Millinder. In seguito ha fatto parte del gruppo di Panama Francis che ha ricostituito l’orchestra di Millinder.
