SILVER HORACE (P)

Norwalk, Connecticut. 2/9/1928.- New Rochelle, 18/6/2014.

Pianista compositore e bandleader, pioniere dell’hard bop del quale è senz’altro il massimo esponente. La sua musica nasce dall’incontro di tre culture, quella europea, africana e nord americana, essendo figlio di portoghesi nativi delle Isole di Capoverde emigrati negli Stati Uniti. Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte a 12 anni e alla scuola superiore ha suonato anche il sax tenore. Nei primi anni della sua carriera i suoi modelli sono stati Bud Powell e Thelonious Monk, eredità che ha sviluppato e personalizzato. Nel 1950 è stato scoperto da Stan Getz mentre suona ad Hartford con il gruppo di Harold Holdt ed è entrato nel suo gruppo, un quartetto completato dal bassista Joe Calloway e dal batterista Walter Golden, che in seguito è diventato un quintetto con l’ingresso di Jimmy Raney e con Tommy Potter e Roy Haynes al posto di Calloway e Golden. Si è trasferito a New York dove ha lavorato con Terry Gibbs, Coleman Hawkins, Oscar Pettiford, J. J. Johnson, Lester Young, ha registrato con Sonny Stitt, Lou Donaldson, Howard McGhee, Al Cohn, Art Farmer, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Phil Urso, Bob Brookmeyer, Milt Jackson, Julian Adderley. Nel 1954 insieme a Art Blakey ha fondato i “Jazz Messengers”, nei quali è stato anche direttore musicale. Dal 1956 ha condotto suoi gruppi molto simili ai Messengers e nei quali ha avuto il fior fiore dei giovani musicisti. Con il suo ”The Preacher” è diventato il re del soul. Ha anche inciso con Paul Chambers, J. R. Monterose, con Lee Morgan nel 1956, Clifford Jordan, con John Gilmore nel 1957 e con Bill Henderson. L’ultimo suo gruppo è stato un tentetto il ”Brass Ensemble”. Ha dato con il suo pianismo un volto nuovo al bop, un bop basato sul blues, sul funk e sul soul. Il suo stile è semplice ma inimitabile, pieno di avvincente vitalità. Compositore di brani suggestivi, mezze canzoni e mezzi blues, temi con frasi blues da 12 battute, seguite da frasi centrali di 8 battute, oppure il tema principale da 15 battute con inciso da 16. Musicista dalla sensibilità diversa, un altro modo di suonare l’afroamericano-latino.

SILVER LEAF ORCHESTRA.

Orchestra composta da sezioni di archi, fondata nel 1896 da Albert Baptiste. Verso il 1910 vi sono stati aggiunti degli strumenti a fiato sin da formare una vera e propria dance band. In essa figuravano ottimi musicisti fra i quali emergevano il chitarrista George Sayles, il bassista Johnny Predonce che nel 1915 al ritiro di Baptiste ne ha assunto la direzione. Era anche chiamata la “Silver Leaf Jazz Band”. L’orchestra si è esibita regolarmente al famoso Mulin Rouge ed al West End Roof Garden di New Orleans.

SILVER LEAF JAZZ ORCHESTRA.

Gruppo che persegue un percorso senza personalità, anche essendo composto di ottimi solisti, purtroppo come molte altre bande del genere che privilegiano l’effetto e non la sostanza. Purtroppo hanno molti estimatori nei cabaret di Bourbon Street a New Orleans. In sostanza sono la parodia delle grandi bande del passato che tentano goffamente di riportare in vita.

Etichetta discografica emessa dalla organizzazione Sears-Roebuck dopo la prima guerra mondiale. Negli anni ’20 è stata usata da diverse compagnie discografiche, specie dalla Gennett e la Paramount e molti musicisti figurano con i pseudonimi. L’etichetta ha cessato di esistere nel 1930 ricomparendo nel 1940 in riedizioni della Columbia e della Okeh.

Pianista, arrangiatore e direttore d’orchestra. Dal 1991 ha collaborato con la “Bansigu Big Band” orchestra di jazz genovese, come pianista, compositore e arrangiatore, e con la quale nel 1995 inciderà anche un album. Ha lavorato anche per il teatro, per il cinema e per la televisione. Nel 1993 ha fatto parte del gruppo “Strani Itinerari”, nel 1994 ha inciso con Claudio Capurro.

La Seyne, Francia. 23/3/1929.

Ha studiato musica a Tolone e nel contempo suona con Paul Piguillen e con Marcel Zanini. Nel 1955 è arrivato a Parigi, dove ha suonato con Renè Thomas, con Michel Hausser, Guy Lafitte, Renè Urtreger e con Sadi. In seguito è entrato nel gruppo di George Arvanitas con il quale si è esibito nel 1962 al Club Saint Germani. Ha suonato con Jacques Denjean e nel 1968 ha fatto parte degli “Swingers” di Francois Guin. Ha anche fatto parte di orchestre di musica leggera.

SIMA JAN (DIR)

Praga, Cecoslovacchia. 17/10/1911.

Nel 1934 ha debuttato con la Harry Harden Orchestra, nella quale ha suonato il pianoforte ed ha scritto gli arrangiamenti. Dal 1935 al 1937 ha diretto la sua “Gramoklub Orchestra” con la quale si è esibita soprattutto a Praga. Nel 1936 Joe Turner ha registrato con la sua orchestra.

SIMEON OMER, VICTOR (CL)

New Orleans, Louisiana. 21/7/1902. – New York. 17/9/1959.

Trasferitosi con la famiglia a Chicago nel 1914, è stato allievo di Lorenzo Tio Jr. Ha debuttato con l’orchestra del fratello, poi dal 1923 al 1927 ha suonato con Charlie Elgar per passare poi con Louis Russell nel 1928. Ha collaborato con Richard M. Jones, Erskine Tate, Jerome Carrington, King Oliver, Reuben Reeves, Jabbo Smith, con Alex Hill nel 1929, con Earl Hines nel 1941, Feltcher Henderson, Coleman Hawkins, Horace Henderson, con Walter Fuller nel 1941, Jimmy Lunceford, Kid Ory, Bud Freman, Bobby Hackett, Billy Eckstine, con Wilbur DeParis dal 1951 al 1959, con il quale è rimasto sino alla morte causata da un cancro alla gola. Ha inciso nel 1926 con Jelly Roll Morton, dal quale era molto considerato. E’ stato uno dei migliori clarinetti di New Orleans.

Ha studiato violoncello e ha cantato nel coro della Cappella Sistina del maestro Perosi. Ha lavorato nelle orchestrine che accompagnano i film muti. E’ arrivato il primo lavoro importante con l’orchestra di Oly Macri nel 1933. Ha suonato poi con Gino Pittoni e nel 1935 è con Sesto Carlini, poi con Rocco ed Alfio Grasso, con Ermete di Mario e nel 1939 con Ernst vant’Hoff in Olanda ed in Svizzera. Negli anni ’40 ha lavorato nelle orchestre del teatro leggero e in orchestrine da ballo. Ha inciso con Lelio Luttazzi, con Baldo Maestri.

SIMION NICOLAS (ANCIE)

Dumbravitsa, Romania. 1959.

Musicista rumeno, compositore e leader consolidato dalla sua grande esperienza. Ha studiato alla scuola di musica di Brasov dall’età di dieci anni ed in seguito si è diplomato in musica classica all’Accademia di Musica di Bucarest. Nella stesso periodo ha scoperto la musica improvvisata, il jazz. Il suo primo gruppo è stato l’Opus 4, che ben presto è diventato il gruppo di jazz più importante del suo paese. Sassofonista volitivo, aggressivo nei tempi mossi, dalla sonorità variopinta, armonicamente ricca. Ha anche rivisitato la propria tradizione folkloristica nelle trascrizioni di Bartok. Nel suo jazz sostanzioso vi sono molte influenze, e le sue performance sono sempre delle interpretazioni vive ed emotive.

Ha scritto numerosi articoli pubblicato da giornali di Belgio, Francia, Germania, Inghilterra, Canada e naturalmente in Svizzera ed ha tenuto molte conferenze sul jazz. L’argomento da lui trattato è stato il jazz prima del bop, sui cui musicisti ha scritto delle biografie, piene di particolari e confidenze avuti dagli stessi. Ha studiato anche musica per sette anni e ha anche debuttato professionalmente. In possesso di un orecchio musicale particolarmente acuto che gli permette di riconoscere immediatamente il solista, le sue conferenze sono state dei modelli di cultura e di entusiasmo.

E’ arrivato in Germania nel 1946 come geniere e poi è stato nella 17 th Special Services Band. Ha studiato musica per tre anni e nel 1949 si è stabilito a Parigi, dove ha studiato al Conservatorio e alla Ecole Normale de Musique ed ha partecipato a delle jam session con Charlie Parker e Kenny Clarke. Ha collaborato con Don Byas, con Robert Mavonzy e Nelson Williams. Nel 1951 ha fatto parte del gruppo del Rihside Club e con un suo trio all’Intrigue, dove ha suonato con Dizzy Gillespie. Ha collaborato con Quincy Jones, ha fatto l’arrangiatore con i Double Six. Ha fatto un tour a Londra con Vertice Reading. E’ il pianista titolare del Mars Club, dove suona in trio con Michel Gaudry, Pierre Cullaz e Elek Bacsik. Ha accompagnato Carmen McRae, nel 1958 Billie Holliday, Nancy Holloway, Al Fats Edwards, in duo con Art Taylor. Nel 1971 ha lavorato in Spagna a Palma de majorka ed in seguito è tornato negli Stati Uniti ritirandosi dalla musica.

Ha inizia suonando la tromba, che in seguito ad un incidente dovrà lasciare per il contrabasso. Dopo aver lavorato con Nat King Cole, ha registrato con Teddy Wilson a Los Angeles. Si è poi trasferito a Chicago dove ha suonato con Johnny Letman, Roy Eldridge, Benny Goodman, Cootie Williams e Louis Armstrong. Ha fatto parte dell’orchestra della CBS, è stato per breve tempo con Duke Ellington, poi a Los Angeles con Eddie Heywood e a New York con Illinois Jacquet. Dal 1944 al 1946 ha registrato con James P.Johnson, Hot Lips Page, Billie Holiday, i Kansas City Six, Sideny De Paris, Al Casey, Coleman Hawkins, Bud Freeman, Andre Previn, Emmett Berry, John Hardee, Don Byas, Benny Carter, Bill De Arango, Billy Kyle e Russell Procope. Ha registrato anche con Ella Fitzgerald, Sir Charles Thompson, Thelonious Monk, Lee Young, Cecil Payme, Billy Taylor. Dal 1949 al 1952 ha fatto parte del trio di Erroll Garner a New York, poi nel trio di Bill Doggett, ha registrato con Eddie ”Lokjaw” Davis, Tyree Glenn. Ha lavorato negli studi con Sonny Stitt, Louie Bellson e delle session organizzate da Norman Granz, con Buddy Rich, nel 1955 con Art Tatum. In Scandinavia con Harry Edison, con il quintetto di Rolf Ericson e Duje Jordan nel 1955. Mentre frequentava la School Of Music della sua città, ha suonato con Clifford Jordan. Nel 1950 ha sostituito Lou Levy nel gruppo di Bill Harris al Blue Note di Chicago. Nel 1952 è stato ingaggiato al Capitol Lunge come membro del gruppo di Coleman Hawkins. Nel 1953 ha suonato con Paul Bascomb, dal 1953 al 1956 con il pianista Bee Hive ed ha avuto un suo trio con Vernel Fournier e Victor Sproles, con il quale ha lavorato al club Bee-Hive, dove ha accompagnato Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Lester Young, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Rollins, Jay Jay Johnson, Kai Winding, Charlie Parker, Wardell Gray. Ha continuato a lavorare anche dopo la chiusura del club. Nel 1955 ha inciso con Ira Sullivan e Red Rodney ed un anno dopo il suo primo disco. Nel 1957 ha diretto una sua orchestra al “C & C Lunge” sempre a Chicago ed ha accompagnato Dakota Staton e Ernestin Anderson. Nel 1959 si è trasferito a New York, lavorato come arrangiatore per Johnny Griffin, ha suonato con il gruppo Griffin-Davis, dal 1961 ha fatto l’accompagnatore e il direttore musicale di Carmen McRae, con la stessa gira il mondo ed incide diversi album. In seguito ha collabora con Betty Carter, ha sostituito Roland Hanna con Roy Eldridge e Hank Jones con Tyree Glenn. Ha suonato con Scott Hamilton e Warren Vaché, sostituendo temporaneamente John Bunch. Nel 1976 ha registrato in Giappone con Anita O’Day, ha accompagnato Helen Humes, Joe Williams ed ha fondato la Milljac Record Production, con la quale ha registrato album come leader. Accompagnatore per eccellenza, dal tocco potente e swingante, ha continuato ha lavorare in diversi ingaggi in locali prestigiosi e nel 1994 ha registrato con il sestetto di Philip Harper. Ha insegnato al William Paterson College di Wayne nel New Jersey dal 1982 al 1997, poi alla New School for Social Research di new York.

Charleston, South Carolina. 1915.

Ha suonato nell’orchestra di Fats Waller, in quella di Hot Lips Page e nel 1939 ha fatto parte dei Savoy Sultan. Nel 1940 ha accompagnato Ella Fitzgerald ed in seguito ha diretto dei propri gruppi. Durante la guerra ha diretto un’orchestra della Marina Militare. Nel 1945 ha un suo gruppo alle Haway e dal 1946 si stabilisce a Chicago dove ha continuato sporadicamente a suonare nel suo ristorante, nel quale spesso si è esibito al pianoforte ed all’organo.

SIMMONS SONNY, HUEY (SA)

Sicily Island, Louisiana. 8/4/1933.-6/4/2021.

Si è trasferito con la famiglia a Oakland in California e dal 1950 ha studiato da solo il sassofono ed ha suonato in gruppi di rhythm-and-blues e in gruppi bop a San Francisco. Nel 1961 ha suonato con Charles Mingus. Ha fatto parte di gruppi sia dell’Est che della West Coast, compreso quello della moglie Barbara Donald. In seguito si è trasferito a New York, frequentando gli ambienti della New thing, si è legato a Prince Lasha con il quale ha collaborato per dodici anni e con il quale nel 1962 ha registrato il primo disco da leader. Distribuendo la sua attività tra New York e la California, ha registrato con Eric Dolphy e Elvin Jones. Ha messo su nel 1965 un gruppo nel quale suonava anche la moglie, partecipando a diversi Festival e nel 1971 dopo aver suonato a quello di Nairobi con Bobby Hutcherson si è ritirato dall’attività. In seguito è tornato alla ribalta con un suo gruppo i “Cosmosamatics”. Solista influenzato prima da Parker ed in seguito seguace di Ornette Coleman.

Cantante e attrice attiva in California. Ha iniziato studiando il pianoforte ed ha frequentato il Fresno State Teachers College. Ha iniziato a cantare nei campus insieme alle sorelle e nel 1932 ha iniziato la carriera di cantante solista, con un proprio programma radiofonico. Nel 1932 ha lavorato con l’orchestra di Tom Gerun a San Francisco, ha cantato in coppia con Tony Martin, è stata con Woody Herman e nel 1938 con Kay Kyser, con il quale ha debuttato nel cinema ed ha sposato. Nel 1941 ha fatto un suo show radiofonico. Come le altre sue colleghe di origini meridionali si dimostra una genuina sensibilità per il jazz. Ha preso parte a diversi film. Voce ragionata e dal relax insinuante.

Ha suonato con Alix Combelle, con Christian Wagner, Andrè Ekyan e Serge Glyckson. Dopo tre anni di prigionia nella seconda guerra mondiale, è tornato alla musica nel 1942 con Combelle, con Ekyan, ha suonato anche con Noel Chiboust, con Jack Dieval e Aimé Barelli. Ha inciso con l’Hot Club De France, con Bill Coleman e con Django Reinhardt.

SIMON EDWARD (P)

Punta Cardon, Venezuela. 27/7/1969.

Nella sua famiglia la musica era di casa, naturalmente parliamo di quella latina. Egli ha iniziato a suonare a otto anni l’organo elettrico. Colpito da un video con Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie e Chick Corea, nel 1984 si è trasferito a Philadelphia dove ha frequentato i corsi di musica alla University Of The Arts sotto la guida della concertista Susan Starr, dedicandosi per anni allo studio del pianoforte in modo quasi ossessivo. Nel 1988 ha fatto parte del trio di Charles Frambrough, ha suonato con Greg Osby, con Kevin Eubanks e nel gruppo “Horizon” di Bobby Watson, con il quale finalmente è arrivata la notorietà ed il successo. Ha anche collaborato per diverso tempo con Terence Blanchard e con Herbie Mann. Nonostante questi trascorsi è conosciuto più come un musicista di jazz latino e di salsa, avendo suonato ed inciso con i vari Jerry Gonzales, Paquito D’Rivera, Manny Oquendo e Charlie Sepulveda. I suoi modelli iniziali sono stati Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Bud Powell, ma soprattutto egli è legato alla musica popolare della sua terra. In possesso di una ottima tecnica, egli rifugge i facili virtuosismi. Il suo pianismo è essenziale, dal tocco splendido. Musicista che sta tra i ritmi latino americani ed il modern mainstream.

Autorevole critico di jazz, condirettore del Metronome. Ha scritto molto sulle grandi orchestre, sia dell’era swing, che di quelle successive. Estimatore di Woody Herman, critico nei confronti del progressive di Stan Kenton. Mentre ha frequentato la Harward University ha suonato la batteria per breve tempo con l’orchestra di Glenn Miller. E’ stato supervisore per la compagnia Jazztone e diretto re dei programmi della Jazztone Society nel 1956. Ha diretto come consulente programmi televisivi e dal 1961 al 1972 è stato direttore esecutivo della Nazional Accademy of Recoding Arts & Sciences. Ha scritto di jazz per il New York Herald Tribune dal 1961 al 1964, per il New Yirk Post dal 1980 al 1981. Ha ricevuto l’ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award nel 1968 per il libro “The Big Band”ed il Grammy Award nel 1978 per le note all’album Bing Crosby a Legendary Performer, della RCA.

Ha debuttato nel 1943 con Russell Jacquet e nel 1945 si è trasferito a Los Angeles, dove ha suonato con Jacquet e Gerald Wilson, nel 1946 ha accompagnato Dinah Washington e nel 1949 Maxwell Davis. Dal 1949 al 1950 ha registrato con Illinois Jacquet, ha suonato con Anderson Lacy, con Russell Jacquet e sino al 1953 ha diretto un gruppo insieme al fratello Freddie. Ha collaborato con Amos Milburn, per breve tempo con Count Basie. E’ andato a New York dove ha lavorato con Cootie Williams, con Dexter Gordon nel 1950, nel 1956 con Cab Calloway, con Wild Bill Davis. Ha accompagnato con suoi gruppi dei cantanti a Las Vegas, a Los Angeles, ha registrato con Jimmy Witherspoon, nel 1967 con Ray Charles e dal 1974 al 1975 con Mercer Ellington. E’ stato uno dei musicisti storici di Harlem. Ha debuttato nel 1938 con l’orchestra di Willie Bryant e nello stesso anno ha preso parte al film “Swing” diretto da Oscar Micheaux come membro dell’orchestra diretta da Leon Gross. Nel 1943 ha diretto un suo gruppo, nel 1944 ha suonato con George James e per breve tempo nel 1946 con Rex Stewart. Ha registrato con Brooklyn Buddies, con Kenny Watts, nel 1947 ha fatto parte dei Blue Blazer di Clyde Bernhardt. Ha rimesso su un suo gruppo con il quale si è esibito nell’area di New York e, mentre suonava allo Savannah Club al Greenwich Village è morto.

Definita “The High Priestess Of Soul”. E’ nata in una famiglia di musicisti e la madre è figlia di una predicatrice. Avviata allo studio del pianoforte classico già all’età di quattro anni, e grazie ad un fondo di assistenza, ha potuto frequentare una scuola di Ashville e la Julliard School di New York. Ha debuttato come cantante e pianista in un club di Atlantic City, ha iniziato la sua carriera ed Eunice Waymon e diventata Nina Simone. Ha insegnato all’Arlene Studio di Philadelphia, ha partecipato a molti Festival e ha dato concerti in tutto il mondo nei quali si è esibita in un misto di jazz, blues, musica folk e pop. Cantante dalla voce cupa e profonda, dalle ricche sfumature. Il suo canto evoca situazioni tenebrose, surreali. Artista poliedrica dalla figura carismatica per questo viene indicata ”The High Priestess Of Soul” la grande sacerdotessa del soul. Riesce a creare intorno a se un’aria di misticismo. Cantante dalla voce solenne ed imponente adeguata alla sua figura scenica, contralto di ebano dai toni bassi mascolini e dal vibrato minaccioso. Molte volte il suo canto sembra una austera recitazione modulata in modo ipnotico. Nel suo repertorio hanno posto Brecht, Weil e Brel, blues musicati da Langston Hughes e sue particolari composizioni.

SIMPKINS ANDY (B)

Richmond, Indiana, 29/4/1932-2/6/1999.

I suoi primi strumenti sono stati il clarinetto ed il pianoforte, che ha iniziato a studiare a dieci e a 14 anni. Ha frequentato la Wilbeforce University dell’Ohio e ha suonato il contrabbasso durante il servizio militare nel 1953. La parte più interessante della sua carriera è stato tra il 1957 ed il 1966, periodo nel quale insieme a Gene Harris ed a Bill Dowdy, ha condiretto uno dei gruppi più popolari d’America “The Three Sounds”con i quali ha registrato abbondantemente. Gruppo nato come “Four Sounds”che in seguito diventato il “Three Sounds”, che suonando swing, bop, blues ha ottenuto molto successo. Ha preso parte a molti filmati e si è esibito in duo con Ray Brown. Dal 1968 al 1975 ha fatto parte del gruppo di George Shearing, ha accompagnato Carmen McRae, Joe Williams, nel 1971 ha registrato con Clare Fisher, ha suonato con Stephane Grappelli, Dave Mckay, Lorex Alexandria, Billy Byers, con Gibbs/De Franco nel 1981, John Dentz, Ernie Watts, Chick Corea, Don Menza e Buddy De Franco. Alla fine degli anni ’70 ha fatto un tour con Monty Alexander, ha registrato in Germania, in Giappone e ha lavorato in gruppi a Hollywood. Ha fatto parte del trio che ha accompagnato Sarah Vaughan, è stato nel gruppo di Mike Wofford, con Gerry Wiggins. Ha lavorato negli studi a Los Angeles, con Terry Gibbs, con Charles McPherson, Joe Pass, Charlie Shoemake, Harold Land, Jimmy Smith, Sue Raney, Scott Hamilton, Billy Mays, Teddy Edwards e dal 1992 al 1993 con Ron Affif.

SIMPSON CASSINO, WENDELL (P)

Chicago, Illinois. 22/7/1909. – Elgin, Illinois. 27/3/1952.

Ha preso lezioni da Zinky Cohn ed il suo primo lavoro importante l’ha avuto con la “Creole Jazz Band” di Bernie Young con il quale ha esordito anche in sala di incisione. Ha lavorato con Freddie Keppard nel 1923, con la “Moulin Rouge Orchestra”nel 1925, con Arthur Sims, con Jabbo Smith e di nuovo con Young nel 1930. Ha suonato con Erskine Tate, ha registrato con una sua orchestra, ha collaborato con King Oliver, con Milt Hinton e fino al 1934 dirige dei suoi gruppi. Nel 1935 ha accompagnato il cantante Frankie “Half Pint”Jaxon. Collaborazione che è finita male poiché è finito in carcere condannato a vita con l’accusa di tentato omicidio proprio del cantante. Ha continuato l’attività musicale nell’orchestra del carcere. La sua abilità con la mano sinistra ha influenzato Earl Hines.

SIMS RAY, C. (TB)

Wichita, Kansas. 18/1/1921.

Fratello del sassofonista Zoot. Ha debuttato in orchestrine da ballo, ha registrato con Anita O’Day e nel 1947 ha lavorato con Benny Goodman sia nell’orchestra ed anche nel sestetto. Dal 1947 al 1957 ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Les Brown, dal 1953 al 1957 è stato con Dave Pell e dal 1957 al 1959 con Harry James. Ha registrato con Bill Holman, Red Norvo, Charlie Barnet, Corky Corcoran ed ha fatto parte del gruppo del fratello anche come cantante. Con la sua personalità ha dato un notevole contributo alle incisioni della orchestre delle quali ha fatto parte. Ha inciso anche con Frank Sinatra.
