VAUGHAN SARAH, LOIS SASSY (VC)

Giovanissima ha preso delle lezioni di piano e canto e ha frequentato la Mount Zion Baptiste Church della città, dove ha suonato l’organo e ha fatto parte del coro come solista. Spinta dagli amici ha preso parte al concorso per dilettanti all’Apollo di Harlem, dove ha vinto un premio, lo stesso vinto qualche anno prima da Ella Fitzgerald, ma soprattutto raccomandata da Billy Eckstine nel 1943 è entrata nell’orchestra di Earl Hines, come seconda pianista e cantante. L’anno dopo ha fatto parte della grande orchestra organizzata dallo stesso Billy Eckstine, con il quale è arrivato il successo completo, anche e soprattutto perché ha dimostrato di essere dotata di mezzi vocali non comuni. Le viene dato l’appellativo di “The Divine”, e diviene una delle cantanti più famose al mondo. Ha registrato nel 1944 con Dizzy Gillespie la prima versione vocale di “Night In Tunisia”, nel maggio dell’anno dopo con Gillespie e Charlie Parker ha registrato Lover Man e Mean To Me, che hanno dimostrato la sua grande capacità di inserirsi con la sua voce nel tessuto strumentale. Ha registrato anche con Tadd Dameron e con Max Roach. E’ stata sposata tre volte, con il primo dei suoi mariti George Treadwell, dal 1946 al 1958, un manager che le ha insegnato a migliorare la sua presenza scenica in modo da essere a proprio agio tra il jazz e lo spettacolo. In seguito è stata sposata con Clyde Atkins dal 1958 al 1961 e con Waymond Reed dal 1978 al 1981. Non potendo avere figli ha adottato una bambina Debra Lois nel 1961. Nel 1950 ha registrato con il gruppo di Jimmy Jones, poi con Miles Davis. Arrivato il contratto con la Mercury, nel 1954 ha registrato un album con Clifford Brown, che contiene forse le sue più belle interpretazioni e che la consacrano signora del Jazz. Altre incisioni con Quincy Jones, con Ernie Wilkins e con l’orchestra di Count Basie. Ottime registrazioni anche quelle effettuate con il suo trio con Jimmy Jones al pianoforte. Innumerevoli le sue partecipazioni e le sue incisioni, sopratutto con orchestre da studio dirette dal marito George Treadwell. Negli anni ’60 ha inciso con Benny Carter, con Barney Kessel, con Oscar Peterson, Michel Legrand, Jimmy Rowles e tanti altri. L’album che è un compendio delle sue capacità dinamiche, lo swing e la prodigalità interpretativa delle sue prestazioni dal vivo e quello registrato con il suo trio al Tivoli di Copenhagen “Sassy Swings The Tivoli”. Cantante sempre a livelli superlativi, vera professionista. E’ in debito con Parker, Gillespie ed Eckstine, la cui frequentazione ha influito notevolmente sull’originalità del suo stile vocale e la sua maturità musicale. Vocalist dalla estensione eccezionale, un magnifico connubio di contralto, soprano e soprano leggero, cosa che gli ha permesso dei salti di registro di grande ampiezza. E’ stata senza altro la prima e la più grande voce moderna del jazz, il suo contralto era una voce operistica di prima scelta, uno strumento dalla vastissima gamma di possibilità che lei controllava con la perizia di un grande solista di Jazz. E’ stata soprannominata affettuosamente Sassy e molto amata dai musicisti, Frank Sinatra ha detto di lei, che quando la ascoltava cantare gli faceva venire la voglia di tagliarsi le vene con un rasoio poco affilato. E’ stata protagonista di festival e tournée internazionali, ha girato anche un film per la 20th Century Fox intitolato “Murder Inc”. Nonostante il successo e l’esperienza di tanti anni ha continuato ad avere il panico da palcoscenico. Socievolissima e generosa con i colleghi, quanto riservata e spesso timida con gli estranei. Le piaceva molto fare vita notturna, dopo le esibizioni amava restare a festeggiare e soprattutto a bere, anche se questo suo vizio non ha influito mai sulle sue prestazioni. Il suo consumo di droga è stato sempre molto discreto ed era anche una grande fumatrice, cosa che probabilmente ha causato il cancro ai polmoni che l’ha portata alla morte a 64 anni. Per nostra fortuna tutto ciò non ha mai avuto effetti deleteri sulla sua voce, sempre splendida, anche se negli ultimi anni probabilmente ha contribuito ha renderla mirabilmente più buia.

Rappresentante del contemporaneo Chicago blues, come altri suoi colleghi cerca di aggiornare la tradizione e lo fa senza snaturarla. Ha iniziato l’attività nel 1968 come sassofonista in gruppi di rhythm-and-blues di Chicago, poi ha collaborato con Phil Guy e nel 1979 ha fatto un tour in Canada. Ha collaborato anche con Luther Allison, Son Seals, Jumior Wells, Valerie Wellington e A.C.Reed. La sua prima registrazione da solista è del 1984. Le sue interpretazioni sono piene di lirismo e sempre prive di enfasi. Nel suo modo di cantare e suonare alterna lamenti angosciosi a scatti di rabbia feroce.

E’ apparso sulla scena del jazz francese nel 1945 con un suo gruppo dixieland, ma non ha fatto parlare molto di se sino al 1960 quando si è trasferito in America a Los Angeles, dove ha intrapreso la carriera di accompagnatore di cantanti. Ha lavorato con Della Reece, Lou Rowis, Carmen McRae, Lorez Alexandria, Lena Horne, Ray Charles, Arthur Prysock e Ester Phillips. Nel 1967 ha partecipato al Festival di Kansas City, ha suonato ed inciso con Gabor Szabo, poi con Jimmy Smith, con Willie Bobo e nel 1974 nel gruppo di Freddie Hubbard. Ha inciso anche con Pat Britt.

Letteralmente Victory Disc, Dischi della Vittoria. Nel 1941 il Dipartimento della Guerra degli Stati Uniti ha deciso di varare una iniziativa che è decollata l’anno successivo, creare un’etichetta discografica, fuori commercio ad uso e consumo dei militari operanti sui vari fronti e nelle varie armi. Dischi a 78 giri del diametro di 30 cm ed infrangibili (si fa per dire) che hanno contribuito a far sentire più vicina l’aria di casa ai militari. Tutti i musicisti che hanno partecipato alle registrazioni non hanno percepito alcun compenso. Di essi ne sono stati registrati e prodotti 900. Sotto il profilo storico essi hanno documentato un periodo della musica americana nel quale, a causa del famoso sciopero indetto dai musicisti, terminato ufficialmente il 14 dicembre 1948, nessun musicista ha registrato in uno studio di incisione.

Cresciuto a New Orleans ha iniziato a otto a studiare il pianoforte ed in seguito il basso elettrico nel gruppo gospel del padre. Dopo le scuole superiori è andato a lezione da Ellis Marsalis al New Orleans Center for the Cultural Arts, ha frequentato la Souther University e ha studiato il trombone con Alvin Batiste, che ha suonato nelle parate stradali. Dal 1986 al 1989 ha lavorato con Ellis Marsalis, con il quale ha fatto una tournée nel sudest asiatico. Ha suonato con Donald Harrison, con Terence Blanchard e dal dicembre del 1987 al fine del 1993 ha fatto parte del gruppo di Wynton Marsalis. Ha fatto delle tournée con la Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. Nel 1994 si è stabilito ad Atlanta, ha continuato saltuariamente la collaborazione con Marsalis e l’orchestra Lincoln Center, ha fatto un tour con Bradford Marsalis, con un gruppo di hip-hop il “Buckshot LeFouque” ed ha registrato con un suo trio nel 1996. Ha suonato con il Wycliffe Gordon and Ron Westray’s nel “Bone Structure”, ha girato e registrato con Harry Connicks, con Marcus Roberts, nel 1999 con Dianne Reeves. Ha registrato con Mark Whitfield, Nicholas Payton, Leory Jones, Courtney Pine, Eric Red, Greg Tardy e da freelance nel 1994 con Herlin Riley e con il trio di Junko Onishi, al Village Vanguard.
VEAN JOHN, RATTY (DR)
Batterista leggendario di New Orleans della fine dell’800. Si dice che fosse capace di ricavare ritmo percuotendo le mani sul corpo e, inoltre, che fosse stato il primo ad accentuare sulla cassa il quattro quarti.
VEASLEY GERALD (B)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 28/7/1955.
Giovanissimo è stato inrodotto nella musica gospel da uno zio membro dei Dixie Hummingbirds. Ha ascoltato il rhythm-and-blues e a dodici anni ha inziato a suonare la il basso elettrico, influenzato dai bassisti di funk e pop James Jamerson e Larry Graham. Dopo le scuole regolari ha studiato alla Università della Pennsylvania e a 21 anni dopo la morte del padre ha deciso di intraprendere la carriera di musicista. Ha iniziato a studiare il basso jazz, l’improvvisazione ed anche la chitarra classica. Ha debuttato nel gruppo Reverie e nel 1980 ha fatto parte della sezione ritmica di Odean Pope, con il quale ha partecipato al North Sea Jazz Festival. Lasciato Pope con il batterista Cornell Rochester ha suonato in trio e con grandi orchestre. Nel 1984 hanno messo sù un’altra orchestra, con la quale hanno registrato. Ha ccompagnato la cantante giapponese di pop Mari Okubu, ha suonato con Grover Washington Jr., insieme a John Lee e Avery Scarpe con McCoy Tyner, ha suonato con John Blake, con il “Sindacate” di Joe Zawinul, inoltre ha collaborato con il gruppo fusion “Special EFX”, con Harry Sokal, con il percussionista George Jinda, con la “Head’s Up Superband”, con Bobby Lyle e nel 1992 ha registrato come leader.

VECA LAWRENCE (CORN)

Era considerato uno dei migliori suonatori bianchi di cornetta della prima generazione. Da giovane ha suonato nella “First Ragtime Band” di Jack Papa Laine. In seguito ha messo su un suo gruppo la “Reliance Brass Band” nella quale ha riunito i migliori musicisti di New Orleans dell’epoca. Si dice fosse il musicista al quale si sarebbe ispirato Bix Beiderbecke.
VEE-JAY.
Compagnia discografica ed etichetta fondata a Gary nell’Indiana alla fine del 1952 e inizio del 1953 da Vivian Carter e James C.Bracken. Il nome è stato preso dalle iniziali dei nomi dei proprietari. In seguito la sede principale è stata a Chicago e la prima produzione ha riguardato rhythm-and-blues ed anche blues e gospel. Il catalogo è organizzato da Calvin Carter. La compagnia ha prodotto LP sino al 1957 ed in seguito è stato istituito un catalogo solo per il jazz diretto da Sid McCoy e i suoi dischi hanno avuto una serie separata come serie 3000 dal 1960 al 1963. In seguito la serie 2500 è stata usata per le riedizioni e per il jazz, in particolare nel 1966 è stata usata l’etichetta Exodus. Nel 1966 in rotta con le banche ha cessato l’attività. Dal 1966 al 1990 la proprietà è di Betty Chiapetta ed il Randy Wood presidente ed è diventata la Vee-Jay International. Nel 1990 Chiapetta l’ha venduta al Rockwood Music Group.
VEES EUGENE, NINNE (G)
Era uno dei tanti cugini di Django Reinhardt, esattamente il primo. Dal 1937 è entrato nel quintetto dell’Hot Club De France con il ruolo di chitarrista da accompagnamento. La sua vita musicale sarà legata a tale gruppo, con il quale parteciperà a molte registrazioni. Ha collaborato anche per brevi periodi nelle orchestre di Alix Combelle, André Ekyan, Aimé Barelli, Philippi Brun, Michel Warlop, Hebert Rostaing, Louis Vola. Ha partecipato al fianco di Louis Armstrong al film “Paris Blues”. Ha lavorato per la televisione e nel 1977 ha suonato in duo con Villerstein nel club “Riverbot”. Specialista in jazz tzigano, chitarrista pieno di swing delicato.

All’età di un anno si è trasferita con la madre ed il padre adottivo a New York, andando a vivere nei quartieri socialmente difficili della “Grande Mela”, prima quello di Spanish Harmel e poi nell’Upper West Side. A’età di nove anni ha iniziato a scrivere poesie e la sua prima conzone a 14 anni. Ha frequentato la New York High School of Perfoeming Arts dove ha studiato danza moderna. Ha iniziato a esibirsi come cantante, la sua vera passione, nei piccoli loocali del Greenwich Village, mentre frequenta il corso di letteratura inglese al Barnard College della Columbia University e nel 1984 ha ottenuto il suo primo contratto con una casa editrice. Ha debuttato discograficamente nel 1985.

Diplomato in organo al Conservatorio di Udine nel 1985, ha continuato a studiare con Franco D’Andrea e frequentato alcuni seminari. In seguito ha partecipato a diversi concorsi internazionali di pianoforte dove si è sempre fatto notare. Nel 1990 ha vinto una borsa di studio per la Berklee School di Boston. Mette su un trio con il bassista Salvatore Majore ed il battersta Roberto Dani. Nel corso degli anni ha suonato con Lee Konitz, Kenny Wheeler, Enrico Rava, Norma Winstone, Paolo Fresu, Joey Baron, Valery Ponomarev, Wolfgang Pushing, George Garzone, Hal Crok, Chris Speed, Nguyen Le, Gabriele Mirabassi, Massimo Urbani, Matt Garrison, Jack Walrath, Stefano Di Battista, Flavio Boltro, Gianni Basso, Maria Pio De Vito, Cameron Brown, Abe Lboriel e Giulio Capiozzo. Lavora attivamente anche all’estero. Pianista tecnicamente preparato, duttile e fantasioso. Controlla bene le diverse influente ed il suo pianismo ha una poetica tutta europea senza essere vincolata suo canoni hardboppistici. Insegna pianoforte jazz al Conservatorio di Trisete e tecnica e preparazione Jazzistica all’Istituto Musicale Citta di Gorizia.

VENTURA CHARLIE (ST)

Figlio di emigranti Italiani, ha iniziato a lavorare il orchestrine locali e ha partecipato a jam session con musicisti già affermati. Il suo primo lavoro stabile è arriva nel 1942 con l’orchestra di Gene Krupa, con il quale ha collaborato anche nei piccoli gruppi e si è guadagnato una ottima reputazione ed ha partecipato a dei concerti nella Jazz At The Philarmonic di Norman Granz. Nel 1943 è andato con Teddy Powell. Nel giugno del 1946 ha costituito una propria orchestra e nel 1947 ha guidato anche un sestetto a cui è in seguito il gruppo “Bop For The People” insieme a Shelly Manne e Kai Winding. Ha ottenuto un grande successo di critica e di pubblico. Nel 1948 ha formato un’altra big band sempre con ottimi elementi e nel 1949 sino al 1951 un’altra orchestra oltre un quartetto i “Big Four”con Buddy Rich, Chubby Jackson e Marty Napoleon. Nel 1952 è tornato con Gene Krupa in un trio anch’esso di successo. Diventa proprietario dell’Open House di Lindenwald nel New Jersy dove suona dal 1952 al 1954. Ha suonato con il duo Cain & Kral nel 1953, con Dave McKenna dal 1954 al 1956. Ha dovuto interrompere spesso l’attività per motivi di salute, và a Camden nel New Jersey dove lavora come disc-jockey e ha suonato con Stan Kenton. Ha continuato a collaborare con Krupa e ha diretto dei piccoli gruppi a Las Vegas dal 1958 al 1961, a Minneapolis e a Denver. Dal 1970 al 1972 è tornato a Las Vegas a fare il disco-jockey, ha suonato a Windsor nel Connecticut dal 1972 al 1975, poi a Fort Lauderdale in Florida. Ha dovuto putroppo lasciare l’attività per gravi problemi di ai denti. Ha inciso anche con Choo Berry nel 1938, con Red Norvo, con Dizzy Gillespie, con Timme Rosenkrantz, ha fatto parte dei Metronome, ha fatto una tournèe con la JATP di Norman Grantz. Musicista che ha molto contribuito a rendere popolare la musica bop, è stato negli anni’40 il sassofonista più popolare degli Stati Uniti. Negli ultimi anni le sue condizioni fisiche sono peggiorate ed è stato anche per un periodo in coma. Ha vissuto anche in condizioni economiche disperate. Si è spento nella casa di riposo di Pleasantville.

Leader della più famosa orchestra francese da ballo degli anni ’30. E’ ricordato soprattutto per aver creato un jazz spettacolo, poiche le sue esibizioni erano arricchite da sketch e canzoni popolari. Il primo gruppo è nato nel 1924 “The Collegians”, ispirato alle grandi orchestre bianche americane, delle quali aveva ascoltato molti dischi ed era riuscito ad avere molte partiture. Ha fatto anche delle tourne in Europa e con lo scoppio della guerra si è ritirato prima in Svizzera e poi nell’America Latina dove ha continua l’attività con successo. Finita la guerra è tornato in Europa e ha messo sù una nuova formazione e ha rinnovato il vecchio successo.
