IVER VIJAY (P)

Albany, New York. 26/10/1971.

Nato vicino a New York da immigrati indiani. Ha cambiato nome nel 1993. Ha iniziato a tre anni a studiare il violino ed a sei anni da autodidatta a suonare il pianoforte. Divide il suo tempo da ragazzino tra le orchestre da camera dove suona il violino e delle bande rock dove suona le tastiere. A quattordici anni ha iniziato ad interessarsi di jazz e ha preferito, l’ascolto di qualsiasi genere musicale attraverso i dischi, allo studio. Laureato in Fisica e dottore in Scienze Cognitive, ha cercato sempre di riuscire a fondere la cultura americana con le sue radici indiane. Molti sono stati i musicisti che lo hanno aiutato nella scalata alla celebrità. Egli stesso racconta che quando giovanissimo viveva ad Oakland, per registrare un album, lo studio di registrazione è stato pagato da Steve Coleman e Gorge Lewis. Ha collaborato con Steve Coleman e con Roscoe Mitchell. Nel 1998 si è trasferito a New York ormai da pianista affermato. Solista da pianismo pieno di fisicità. Nel 2003 ha registrato un album in collaborazione con Mike Ladd, poeta, rapper, produttore ed animatore della scena underground newyorkese.

IZENZON DAVID (B).

Pittsburgh, Kansas.17/5/1932. – New York. 8/10/1979.

Si è accostato alla musica da piccolo cantando nella sinagoga, ma solo a 24 anni ha iniziato a studiare il contrabasso. Ha suona nei club e qui nel 1958 ha accompagna Dodo Marmarosa. Nel 1963 ha vinto una borsa di studio alla Manhattan School of Music di New York, dove ha perfezionato la sua tecnica, diventando un bassista molto richiesta. Ha suonato con Bill Dixon, Archie Shepp, Paul Bley, Mose Allison, oltre a suonare in gruppi sinfonici e da camera. Nel 1965 ha suonato con Ornette Coleman, poi con Sonny Rollins nel 1964, ha inciso con Toshiho Akiyoshi, Steve Kuhn, Harold McNair e Joseph Scianni. Nel 1969 ha messo sù un gruppo con Gato Barbieri ed una formazione di tutti bassisti di gran livello, intanto ha ripreso a studiare questa volta psicologia ed ha insegnato al Bronx Community College. Dal 1972 ha trascurato la musica per dedicarsi al figlio cerebroleso e si è laureato ed ha aperto uno studio di psicoterapia a New York. Nel 1975 ha composto How Music Can Save The World, dedicata a tutti coloro che lo hanno aiutato a curare il figlio. Ha fondato un’associazione umanitaria e ha presieduto sedute per curare i tossicomani. Bassista dal tocco classico, dalla sonorità uguale a quella di una chitarra. Molte volte aveva la foga di un percussionista.

JACINTHA ABISHEGANADEN (VC)

Singapore, India. 3/10/1957.

Cantante non professionista, laureata in letteratura inglese alla National University di Singapore. Molto attiva anche in campo teatrale e nel cinema, dove ha scritto delle colonne sonore. E’ giudicata una ottima cantante.

JACK THE BEAR.

Brano registrato da Duke Ellington per la Victor, composto da Ellington per ricordare John Wilson pianista di rent parties molto popolare nella Harlem dell’inizio degli anni ’20. Musicista originario dell’Ohio o della Pensylvania, dedito alle droghe e giocatore impenitente. Come pianista non ha lasciato nessuna registrazione.

JACK THE BELLBOY.

Nome di un Disc Jockey il cui vero nome era Ed McKenzie che conduceva a Detroit un programma molto popolare alla trasmittente WJBK. Con lo stesso nome una incisione di Lione Hampton per la Victor.

JACKASS BLUES.

Termine dai diversi significati: per i musicisti bianchi americani indica una persona molto stupida, mentre per i neri è una variazione di ”ass” (culo) ma viene anche usato per indicare gli organi genitali femminili. Così è facilmente comprensibile il titolo di un blues inciso da Merline Johnson: “Jackass For Sale”. Qualcuno ha anche avanzato l’ipotesi che proprio da questo termine deriverebbe la parola “JAZZ”.

JACKIE and ROY

Duo vocale composto da Jackie Cain e Roy Kral. Il loro è uno stile legato alla tradizione del bop bianco di Chicago, dalle concezioni classiche e garbate. Hanno esordito nel 1946 con Charlie Ventura, nel 1949 lasciato Ventura si sono sposati ed hanno iniziato la carriera in duo, esibendosi nei club di Chicago e di New York. Tra il 1957 ed il 1960 hanno lavorato in TV a Las Vegas. Hanno composto anche canzoni commerciali e registrato con un gruppi della West Coast. Attivi ancora negli anni ’80.

Ha studiato sotto la guida di Dave Perkins uno dei maestri più celebri della città e nel 1918 ha esordito ad Algiers con la band di Elton Theodore. Nel 1920 è entrato nella Tuxedo Brass Band di Oscar Celestin, poi nel 1925 nell’orchestra di Manuel Perez e nel 1931 nella Young Tuxedo Brass Band di John Casimir. Nel 1953 ha abbandonato l’attività. Aveva come soprannome “Little Albert”.

JACKSON ALBERT (SAX-VIOL)

Della sua vita si sa poco o niente, anche se come musicista è stato molto attivo ed a lavorato con molti gruppi di un certo livello. Ha suonato dal 1923 al 1927 con Earle Howard, poi con Billy Kato nel 1927, con Chick Webb nel 1931, di nuovo con Earle Howard dal 1932 al 1933) Ha collaborato anche con Luky Millinder nel 1932 e con Rex Stewart nel 1934.

JACKSON ALLEN (B)

Bassista che ha accompagnato la cantante Lorez Alexandria nel 1978. Ha inoltre lavorato con Harry Edison, con Benny Carter, con Ernie Andrews, con Gildo Mahones, con il sassofonista Pat Britt, nel 1975 con Gary Barone, con Eddie Harris, con Sonny Stitt, con Frank Rosolino nel 1976. Abbiamo avuto notizia del suo decesso avvenuto il 28 marzo 1991 a Los Angeles.

Ha iniziato a lavorare professionalmente a 17 anni ed ha contribuito alla registrazione di importanti dischi di soul music a Filadelfia dal 1972 al 1974. Ha contribuito molto anche all’assetto tecnologico dello strumento ed alla sua evoluzione. Ha collaborato con Horace Silver nel 1973, con Buddy Rich dal 1973 al 1976, con Tony Williams, con Lionel Hampton, con Steve Khan, con Gerry Mulligan nel 1983, con Al Di Meola, Lee Ritenour, con Mike Camilo nel 1985, con David Sanborn nel 1986, con Dave Grusin, con John Scofield e con Michel Petrucciani.

JACKSON BESTIE, LUCILE BOGAN (VC)

Amory, Mississippi, 1/4/1897. – Los Angeles,California. 10/8/1948.

Cantante cresciuta a Birmingham in Alabama. E’ stata la prima cantante a registrare le canzoni del vaudeville per la Okeh Record a New York nel 1923, accompagnata dal pianista Enrico Callens. Giudicata insieme a Ma Raney e a Bestie Smith, come la terza grande del blues. Ha cantato lo straight-talkin blues, il blues il cui argomento era il bere e la prostituzione, trattate in modo provocante, molte scritte da lei stessa. Nel 1932 tornata a Birminghan ha iniziato a registrare come Bessie Jackson, si dice per nascondere la sua identità. Ha continuato a registrare accompagnata dal pianista Walter Roland. In seguito si è trasferita a Los Angeles.

JACKSON BULLMOOSE, BENJAMIN CLARANCE, JR. (ST-VC)

Cleveland, Ohio. 22/4/1919. – Cleveland, Ohio. 31/7/1989.

Ha iniziato a suonare il violino a quattro anni e ha fatto parte del coro della chiesa. Frequenta la scuola superiore ed inizia a suonare il sax tenore. Ha debuttato come prefessionista con Freddie Webster. Si stabilisce a Buffalo all’inizio del 1940 e dal 1942 ha fatto parte del gruppo fisso del Cedar Gardenia Club di Cleveland, poi nel 1944 è entrato come cantante e sassofonista nella orchestra di Luky Millinder. Ha registrato con l’orchestra di Sidney Catlett a Los Angeles nel gennaio del 1945. Raggiunto il successo ha messo su un suo gruppo i “Buffalo Bearcats”. Ormai è un cantante affermato ed il suo repertorio è diventato piuttosto audace. Ha deciso in seguito di tornare a fare principalmente il sassofonista. Alla fine degli anni ’50 ha diradato i suoi impegni, registrando occasionalmente come cantante. Negli anni’70 ha suonato con Buck Clayton e con Johnny Otis. Cantante e sassofonista ottimo interprete di ballad e blues.

JACKSON CALVIN JOHN CALVIN JACKSON (P)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. 25/5/1919. – Encinitas, California. 28/11/1986.

Invogliato dalla madre cantante, ha studiato per tredici anni musica nella sua città e altri quattro anni al Julliard Institute di New York. Ha debuttato con l’orchestra di Frankie Fairfax e dal 1943 è stato il direttore musicale della MGM a Hollywood. E’ stato arrangiatore per Harry James e ha registrato con Phil Moore. Nel 1948 è tornato a New York dove ha accompagnato Mildred Bailey al Cafè Society ed ha registrato diversi dischi. Nel 1961 ha frequentemente registrato con un suo trio e quartetto. In seguito ha lavorato a Toronto e con una sua orchestra per varie stazioni televisive, oltre ad esibirsi spesso anche come solista al Park Plaza Hotel. Nel 1957 è tornato negli Stati Uniti per stabilirsi a Los Angeles, dove ha guidato un piccolo gruppo. Dotato di buoni fondamentali, si è fatto apprezzare come un pianista molto raffinato. Una sua composizione ”Profile of an American” dedicata al Presidente Kennedy è stata eseguita dalla Hollywood Simphony Orchestra.

Popolare intrattenitore nei locali del South Side di Chicago, accompagna il suo canto con un banjo e con un uculele. Ha iniziato a lavorare nei minstrelles e nei medicina party. All’inizio degli anni ’20 si è trasferito a Chicago nel ‘20 e si è esibito al famoso Maxwell Street Market, ha iniziato a registrare ed è arrivato anche il successo commerciale. Ha avuto come partner Big Bill Broonzy. Dotato di una ricca vocalità, un baritono dal tono sostanzioso e forte. E’ il vero rappresentante dell’idioma urbano degli anni ’20, egli si esprime in modo libero, senza una marcata connotazione razziale.

E’ cresciuto a Fairfield Countr y nel Connecticut e ha dodici anni già suona il pianoforte, l’ukulele, la chitarra e il contrabbasso. Ha suonato musica classica nelle scuole superiori e la chitarra elettrica in gruppi locali. Ha frequentato l’Università di Boston dal 1968 al 1969 e la Berklee School of Music dal 1970 al 1973 e durante questo periodo ha collaborato con Herb Pomeroy e John LaPorta. Nel 1973 ha suonato con John Abercrombie, con Jeremy Steig e con Gary Burton. Nel settembre del 1973 ha suonato e inciso con Woody Herman, con il quale ha fatto anche delle tournée. Ha suonato con Chuck Mangione e nel 1975 si è trasferito a New York, dove ha lavorato freelance con John Scofield, con Jim McNeely, ha accompagnato Chris Connor, ha fatto un tour con Miroslav Vitous, con Bill Watrous e con HOrace Silver nel 1977. Ha suonato con Betty Carter al Village Vanguard, poi con la Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, Cedar Walton, Art Taylor, Ronnie Cuber e con Hubert Laws in un concerto alla Carnegie Hall ed ai festival di Berkeley in California nel 1979. Dal 1981 al 1983 ha accompagnato in un tour internazionale Liza Minelli, dal 1983 al 1985 ha suonato con Elvin Jones. Ha registrato nel 1991 con Ravi Coltrane, ha collaborato con Tony Bennett, con Al DiMeola, nel 1992 con Red Rodney ha registrato e con Roy Haynes ha partecipato a diversi festival europei. Nel 1994 ha suonato con Billy Taylor, poi con Mark Soskin, con Danny Gottlieb, ha fatto parte del gruppo cooperativo “Contempo Trio”.
