ROBINSON SPIKE (REEDS)

Kenosha, Wisconsin. 16/1/1930. – 29/10/2001.

Ha debuttato in orchestrine da ballo. Durante il servizio militare a Londra ha fatto parte dell’Orchestra dell’ambasciata Americana. Ha messo su un quartetto con il quale ha fatto molte tournée. Tornato negli Stati Uniti ha usufruito di una borsa di studio che permette ai congedati di riprendere gli studi. Ha studiato ingegneria e si è diplomato nel 1958 al Crysler Institute di Detroit ed ha iniziato ad esercitare la professione. Ha suonato occasionalmente con Victor Feldman, Ronnie Scott, Lennie Bush, Tommy Pollard, John Dankworth. Si esibisce al Club Eleven e ha registrato con la Esquire. Nel 1952 è tornato negli Stati Uniti, dove altre a fare l’ingegnere ha suonato con Dave Crusin, Don Grusin, Gus Johnson, Johnny Smith, Benny Carter, Red Rodney, Teddy Wilson, Milt Hinton, la Denver Sinphony, la Boulder Philarmonic And Chamber Orchestra. Nel 1964 ha lasciato l’attività di ingenere per dedicarsi completamente alla musica, ha lavorato per diverso tempo alla Spike Robinson’s Terrace Inn a Boulder nel Colorado. E’ tornato spesso a lavorare in Inghilterra e ha partecipato a diverse puntante del “Sidran on Record”della National Public Radio e ha diretto alla BBC il documentario “Club Eleven Reunion”.

Bambino prodigio, cominciò ad avere successo come pianista di boogie-woogie all’età di tre anni, a sette anni si è esibito insieme all’orchestra di Lionel Hampton, che avrebbe voluto portarlo in tour ma la legge sulla protezione dei bambini gli lo ha impedito. Nel 1946 si è esibito alla casa Bianco per il Presidente Harry S.Truman. Ha fatto parte come attrazione anche nelle orchestre di Louis Armstrong e Tommy Dorsey tra le altre. Ha effettuato varie registrazioni per la Capitol, ha preso parte al film”No live no love”. Ha effettuato molte tournée ottenendo dovunque grande successo.

ROBINSON WILLIAM, FIELDS “GEECHIE”JULIUS (TB)

U.S.A. 1904.

Uno dei tanti musicisti di jazz cresciuti in un orfanotrofio statale, nel nostro caso il Jenkins Orphanage di Charleston nella Carolina del Sud. Nel 1935 è entrato nell’orchestra di Don Albert, nel 1945 con Fletcher Henderson. In seguito di lui non si ha più notizie.

Ottimo compositore di musica gospel e soul, ha composta brani pieni di melodia e lirica che hanno trovato nei Temptations degli ottimi esecutori.

ROBINSON WILLARD (P-VC)

Shelbina, Missouri. 18/9/1894. – Peeskill, New York. 24/6/1968.

Ha diretto negli anni’20 e’30 la Deep Rever Orchestra, che ha avuto un suo show il ”Plantation Echoes” ed in seguito ancora diversi altri lavori alla radio. Sempre alla radio ha accompagnato Mildred Bailey e i “Three Nightingales”. Ha inciso oltre che con la sua orchestra, anche come pianista solista. Si è distinto anche come compositore.

Nel 1967 si è trasferito a Milano dove ha suonato al Charlie Max insieme a Gato Barbieri. Ha suonato con Giorgio Azzolini, con Hugo Heredia, Eraldo Volonté, Gianni Cazzola, Giancarlo Barigozzi, Carlo Milano e Giancarlo Pillot. Ha messo su un gruppo con il quale ha inciso. Ha collaborato con Sergio Mandini, con il gruppo Basso/Valdambrini e poi con il Valdambrini/Piana. Negli anni ’80 ha suonato con Charlie Mariano, con Slide Hampton, Dizzy Reece e Kenny Clarke. Ha anche lavorato al Capolinea ma soprattutto negli studi di registrazione. Ha registrato dei dischi anche con Sergio Fanni e Furio di Castri.

Ha studiato da solo la batteria a 17 anni e ha debuttato con il gruppo di Totò Torquati. Ha messo su un gruppo con lo stesso Troquati, Carlo Loffredo e Mino Fabiano. Nel 1964 ha suonato con Gato Barbieri, nel 1965 ha lavorato alla radio con Nunzio Rotondo, ha partecipato a concerti con Carlo Loffredo. E’ stato titolare al Folkstudio e ha fatto parte con Loffredo dell’orchestra che ha accompagnato la commedia musicale Ciao Rudy. Nel 1970 ha suonato con Mario Schiano e Marcello Rosa, ha lavorato al Blue Note il locale di Pepito Pignatelli, dove ha avuto modo di suonare con Johnny Griffin, con Art Farmer e Lou Bennett. Ha anche fatto parte ai cimbales di gruppi salsa.

ROCCISANO JOE, JOSEPH LUCIAN. (SA)

Springfield, Massachusetts. 15/10/1939. – New York. 9/11/1998.

All’età di otto anni ha iniziato a suonare il mandolino e a 13 il clarinetto ed in seguito il sassofono. Ha debuttato con la Tommy Dorsey Orchestra diretta da Warren Covington nel 1957, mentre ancora studia. Nel 1964 ha ha suonato con Sam Donahue, dal 1966 al 1968 ha registrato e suonato con Don Ellis, con il quale ha anche partecipato ai Festival di Monterey e di Newport. Nel 1967 ha lavorato con Ray Charles. Si è trasferito a Los Angeles, dove lavora freelance con Woody Herman, Louie Bellson, Bobby Bryant, Terry Gibbs, Don Menza, Bill Holman, Don Rader, Pete Christlieb, Milcho Leviev. Si è affermato anche come ottimo arrangiatore con Bellson, Ellis, Herman e Doc Severinsen. Ha lavorato per la Capp/Pierce nel 1981. Nel dicembre del 1993 ha diretto un suo gruppo al Zanzibar e ha registrato sia con la grande orchestra che con un suo nonetto nel 1997. Negli ultimi tempi ha lavorato spesso al Club Blue Note di New York, dove è deceduto per un attacco di cuore.

Ha diretto un suo trio con Luca Garlaschelli e Massimo Pintori. Ha avuto molti riconoscimenti ed ha avuto modo di lavorare con Lol Coxill, Veryan Weston, Mark Sanders, John Edward, Gayle Brand, Steve Noble, Alan Wilkinson. Chitarrista seguace di Derek Bailey, del quale ne ripropone la libertà eccessiva nell’improvvisazione, la sua chiarezza e la sua tensione.

Wilmington, Delaware. 5/1/1920. – Pleasantville, New Jersey. 15/2/1999.

Ha studiato ad Atlantic City e nel 1939 si è trasferita a New York dove ha lavorato come donna di servizio, poi ha fatto la manicure ed ha iniziato a cantare. Ha partecipato come molte sue colleghe allo spettacolo per dilettanti del Teatro Apollo di Harlem quindi è stata ingaggiata da Lee Young e poi nel 1941 è entrata nel gruppo dei Savoy Sultans, con i quali ha registrato il suo primo disco. Ha lavorato con Hot Lips Page, con Lester Young e nel 1943 è entra nell’orchestra di Duke Ellington in sostituzione di Ivie Anderson, partecipando al concerto del 23 maggio 1943 alla Carnegie Hall. Nel 1952 è tornata con Ellington e ha realizzato con lui la più bella edizione cantata di Take The A Train, nella quale rivela delle doti di cantante bop non comuni. Ha fatto parte anche delle orchestre di Earl Hines e Gerald Wilson. Per diverso tempo ha lavorato nei Club della West Coast e dal 1960 è tornata a New York. Cantante dotata di molto talento, ma poco apprezzata. Forse ha nociuto alla sua fama proprio la permanenza nell’orchestra di Ellington.

Ha iniziato a sei anni a studiare il pianoforte classico ed in seguito anche composizione e percussioni. Dopo aver ascoltato Oscar Peterson si è interessato di jazz e ha studiato al Conservatorio di Parigi dove ha seguito le lezioni di piano jazz del maestro Michel Sardaby e per due anni quelle di Martial Solal. Nel 1984 ha formato il suo primo trio partecipando a molte manifestazioni internazionali. Ha diretto un altro trio con François Moutin e Louis Moutin, ha collaborato con Laurent Cugny, con Didier Levallet, con Johnny Griffin, Anthony Ortega, Aldo Romano, Christian Escoude, ha fatto parte dell’Orchestra National de Jazz. Pianista abbastanza conosciuto in terra francese, molto influenzato da Bill Evans e conseguentemente da Michel Petrucciani.

Ha studiato con Sherman Ferguson e ha fatto parte di locali gruppi funk. Nel 1980 ha suonato con Odean Pope, partecipando anche al North Sea Jazz Festival, poi con Gerald Veasley, con James”Blood”Ulmer e Jamaaladeen Tacuma e nel 1985 ha registrato da cooleader con Veasley. Ha fatto tournée con il “Syndicate” di Joe Zawinul e nel 1990 con il “Music Revelation Ensemble”di Ulmer. Ha formato un gruppo insieme a Cornell Rochester ed N.P.Boys, con il quale è venuto anche in Europa. Insieme a Tacuma col “Wolter Wierbos’s Podium Trio”, ha suonato con Uri Caine ed ha avuto una lunga collaborazione con l’armonicista Zeena Parkins. Ha collaborato con Elliott Sharp e ha continuato a collaborare con Ulmer.

ROCKWELL BOB (ST)

Miami, Oklahoma. 2/5/1945.

Ha vissuto l’infanzia a Nowata nell’Oklahoma e poi si è trasferito con la famiglia a Minneapolis dove ha iniziato a suonare il clarinetto a 13 anni e poi il sassofono da autodidatta. A 18 anni ha esordito in gruppi rock e nel 1966 nel jazz con il trio del pianista Bobby Lyle. Dal 1969 al 1973 ha lavorato a Las Vegas, poi è tornato a Minneapolis dove ha messo su il quartetto “Naturla Life”. Nel 1978 è andato a New York dove ha fatto parte dell’orchestra Thad Jones/Mel Lewis, ha poi suonato con quella di Tito Puente, poi ha collaborato con John Hicks, Billy Hart, Marc Johnson, Ron McClure, con Freddie Hubbard ha fatto una tournée in Australia. Nel 1983 ha soggiornato in Danimarca a Copenhagen dove ha diretto un quartetto alla Radioens Big Band dal 1992 al 1995, ha anche suonato con i “The Organizers”, con l’organista Kjeld Lauritsen, con Jesper Lundgaard. Ha registrato anche con Tom Harrell, Duke Jordan, Jorgen Emborg, Karsten Houmark, con l’orchestra diretta da Jens Kluver, con Niels Jorgen, Steen, Jan Kaspersen, Joe Bonner e con la cantante Linda Peterson, con Ben Sidran, Erlibng Kroner e Jens Winther. Musicista completo, originale e con una buona personalità.

Ha seguito dei studi classici e ascoltato il jazz attraverso i dischi e ha partecipato alle jam sessions nell’Hot Club di Barcellona. Ha suonato al Jamboree Club dove ha accompagnato musicisti di passaggio come Tony Scott, Art Farmer, Guy Lafitte, Tete Montoliu, Lucky Thompson e con orchestre commerciali come quella di Xavier Cugat e Frank Pourcel. Ha diretto il suo gruppo “Roda de Saxos” e nel 1995 ha registrato con il pianista Francesc Borrull. Ha insegnato sassofono al Centro Studi Musicali della sua città.

RODBY STEVE, STEVEN. (B)

Joliet, Illinois. 9/12/1954.

Ha seguito studi classici a dieci anni ed ha suonato jazz alle scuole superiori. Ha partecipato ai campus di Lyle Mays, Pat Metheny e Danny Gottlieb. Si è laureato alla Northwestern University nel 1977 e ha imparato da solo a suonare il basso elettrico. Ha fatto parte della sezione ritmica della Jazz Showcase di Chicago, dove ha accompagnato molti musicisti. Ha fatto delle tournée con Monty Alexander, con Michael Franks ed ha sostituito Mark Egan nel gruppo di Pat Metheny. Ha suonato in duo con il chitarrista Ross Traut e spesso ha avuto come partner Paul Wertico. Musicista portato ad un diverso suono strutturale tra le registrazioni e quello dal vivo.

RODEMICH GENE, EUGENE, FREDERICK (P)

St.Louis, Missouri. 13/4/1890 – New York. 27/2/1934.

Pianista dinamico dall’abilità tecnica esplosiva, incredibile, apparso sulla scena del Jazz al St.Louis World’s Fair del 1904. La sua performance ha suscitato entusiasmi sia nei musicisti bianchi che in quelli di colore. Capitalizzando questo primo successo ha messo su la sua orchestra che ha ottenuto un successo nazionale nel 1919 con l’incisione di “Swanee” per l’etichetta Brunswick. Questo successo è stato seguito da una sequenza di sessioni di incisione tutte proficue da 1920-1926, spesso ospitando nella sua orchestra jazzmen del calibro di Frank Trumbauer, Porter Brown, Harry Conley ed Al Jolson. Ha avuto anche molto successo come compositore di colone sonore. E’ morto all’apice della carriera. La sua musica è stata finalmente riedita dalla Starlight Production di St.Louis, che ha compiuto un’opera di restauro di vecchie incisioni, dando modo di apprezzare oggi questo musicista dimenticato e soprattutto dimostrando perché era stato tanto apprezzato all’epoca e la sua orchestra considerata la migliore.

RODGERS GENE (P)

New York. 5/3/1910. – New York. 23/10/1987.

Figlio di un insegnante del Conservatorio di Boston, dove ha completato gli studi e nel 1928 si è trasferito a New York dove ha messo su il gruppo”The Revelers”, ha suonato poi con Billy Fowler, Chick Webb, Bingie Madison, con Clarence Williams nel 1931, con King Oliver, Kaiser Marshall e Teddy Hill. Si è esibito in duo con Fred Radcliffe ha lavorato nelle orchestre dei teatri di riviste con le quali ha girato il mondo. In un soggiorno londinese ha registrato con Benny Carter nel 1936. Tornato negli Stati Uniti è entrato come pianista e arrangiatore nell’orchestra di Coleman Hawkins nel 1939, partecipando alla registrazione della famosa edizione di ”Body And Soul”. Nel 1939 ha suonato con Zutty Singleton e con Erskine Hawkins. E’ andato in California dove ha lavorato nelle colonne sonore del cinema ed ha fatto delle lunghe tournée. Quando poi soggiorna a New York ha lavorato nei migliori club della città torna trova sempre un posto di pianista in qualche club e ha registrato.

Compositore di successo, insieme ai suoi partners abituali, i parolieri Lorenz Hart e Oscar Hammerstein II, ha firmato alcune delle più belle canzoni del repertorio delle musiche per teatro e per il cinema. Molte delle sue arie più note sono diventate degli standards per molti jazzmen. Ricordiamo l’apprezzamento ed il successo avuto degli album con le sue più note canzoni interpretate da Oscar Peterson e da Ella Fitzgerald.

RODIN GIL, A.GIBERT. (SA)

Russia. 9/12/1906. – Palm Springs, California. 10/6/1974.

Ha debuttato nel 1924 con Art Kahn a Chicago e poi è andato in California dove ha suonato nell’orchestra di Harry Bastin e nel 1926 è entrato nell’orchestra di Ben Pollack, nella quale è rimasto sino al 1934 e della quale è stato anche il direttore musicale ed il manager. Con Pollack egli ha partecipato a molte registrazioni nelle quali si è potuto ammirare le sua capacità di solista e di arrangiatore. Nel 1935 è diventato presidente della cooperativa dei musicisti che costituiscono l’orchestra di Bob Crosby, con il quale ha lavorato sino al 1942. Nel 1945 ha messo su un gruppo insieme a Ray Bauduc, nel quale egli si esibisce al sax baritono. Ha collaborato con Bob Crosby a mettere su un nuovo gruppo di cui sarà il direttore musicale. Dal 1955 ha lasciato l’attività per dedicarsi alla produzione televisiva. Per un periodo limitato ha fatto parte dell’orchestra di Jack Teagarden.
