RUMSEY HOWARD (B)

Brawley, California. 6/11/1917. – Newport Beach, California. 15/7/2015.

Da ragazzo suona la batteria e la cambia con il contrabasso negli anni del college. Il suo debutto nel 1938 con Vido Musso e nel 1941 è entrato con la nascente orchestra di Stan Kenton con la quale ha acquistato esperienza e una certa fama. Ha suonato poi con Freddie Slak, Alvino Rey, Charlie Barnet, Wingy Manone, Barney Bigard, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis. Nel 1949 ha iniziato ad organizzare jam session al Lighthouse di Ermosa Beach, locale il cui proprietario è John Levine. Ha ottenuto successo sin dal primo giorno il 29 maggio 1949, e diventa il centro della musica della West Coast, il suo laboratorio sperimentale. Nel 1951 è nata la prima “Lighthouse All Stars” che accoglie il fior fiore dei musicisti locali e anche di passaggio. Ha organizzato anche una casa discografica la Skylark che presto viene sostituita dalla Contemporary Records di Lester Koenig nel compito di immortalare le imprese dei californiani. Il jazz della west coast deve molto a lui, soprattutto per la sua opera di organizzatore. Ma è anche un basso di notevole validità soprattutto nel creare un solido accompagnamento.

All’età di 14 anni ha fatto parte di gruppi di dilettanti ed era lontano da lui di fare il musicista di professione. Nel 1979 si è trasferito a Sandviken dove ha insegnato la musica ed ha fatto parte della Sandviken Big Band. Il suo talento è stato molto apprezzato dai musicisti ospiti che ha accompagnato ed è stato riconosciuto come uno dei migliori pianisti svedesi.

RUSCA MARIO (P)

Torino, Italia. 2/4/1937.

Nei primi anni ’50 ha svolto prevalentemente attività nella musica leggera, nel 1959 trasferitosi a Milano ha studiato armonia e ha ripreso a suonare del jazz al Capolinea, appena inaugurato. Nel 1971 ha collaborato con Joe Venuti, con il quale ha partecipato a diversi concerti anche negli anni futuri. Nel 1972 è entrato nella big band di Gil Cuppini e nel 1974 ha inciso il suo primo disco da leader con Stefano Cerri e Gianni Cazzola. Nel 1976 ha fatto una tournée con Gerry Mulligan, ha fatto parte del gruppo di Tullio De Piscopo e nel 1977 ha partecipato al Festival di St.Vincent. Lo stesso anno è iniziata la sua collaborazione con Gianni Basso che è durata per molti anni. Nel 1978 ha suonato con Gianni Bedori, in trio con Art Farmer e Gianni Cazzola. Ha suonato anche con Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Don Byas, Kenny Clarke, Tony Scott, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Higgins, Marty Morell, Eddie Gomez, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis.

RUSCH BOB, ROBERT (DR)

Ha studiato clarinetto e batteria che ha suonato in un workshop con Jaki Byard dal 1968 al 1971, poi con Cedar Walton. Tra il 1960 al 1970 ha scritto per periodici Americani ed Europei: il Down Beat, il Jazz Journal e il Jazz Forum. Nel 1975 ha iniziato la pubblicazione di un periodico mensile il Cadence e in seguito ha fondato la Cadence Jazz Records nel 1980, con la quale ha pubblicato sino alla fine degli anni ’90 più di cento dischi; la North Country Record Distribution che nel 1983 ha distribuito più di 900 dischi di piccole etichette in dipendenti; la Cadence Jazz Books nel 1992 che ha pubblicato referenze di libri, storie e discografie; la CIMP nel 1996 ha prodotto 100 dischi della musica di fine secolo. Ha donato tutto l’enorme materiale raccolto allo Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library.

 

RUSCONI TONY (DR)

Trento, Italia. 12/1/1848.

Ha fatto le prime esperienze jazzistiche nel 1973 con il pianista Sante Palumbo. In seguito è entrato nel “Free Group”di Bologna con il quale è rimasto sino al 1974, ha collaborato con Renato Geremia e ha fatto parte del trio di Guido Mazzon. Nel 1975 ha fondato con Geremia e Mauro Pariotto l’”Organico di Musica Creativa ed Improvvisata”con il quale ha svolto una intensa attività di incisioni e partecipazioni a manifestazioni europee. Nel 1978 è entrato nella “Precarious Orchestra”, ha collaborato con diversi artisti europei di avanguardia come Tristian Honsinger, Radu Malfatti, Marc Charig, Evan Parker e Pau Rutherford. Nel 1978 ha suonato in duo con Steve Lacy. Dal 1980 ha orientato la sua attività al teatro, cinema e alla danza. Nel 1947 è tra gli organizzatori della “Cooperativa Orchestra”.

Ha iniziato a studiare il pianoforte classico a tre anni e a dieci ha scoperto il jazz. Nel 1972 ha partecipato al Festival di Monterey con il gruppo “The Sylvers” insieme a Melba Liston, Leslie Drayton e Abbey Lincoln. In seguito ha suonato con Gerald Wilson, Donald Byrd, Benny Golson e Hubert Laws, Ha inciso con Jean-Luc Ponty, con Stanley Turrentine, nel 1974 arriva il suo primo album da leader “Prelusion”insieme a Joe Henderson e ha registrato con Sonny Rollins nel 1976. Si è laureato in musica ed in pianoforte alla Università della California. Nel 1977 ha suonato le tastiere con Lee Ritenour e ha collaborato con molti gruppi anche fuori dal jazz. Nel 1982 insieme a Ernie Watts e Ndugu Chancler è stato nei “The Meeting”e nel 1988 nel gruppo di Carlos Santana e Wayne Shorter. Dal 1988 al 1995 ha girato l’Europa ed il Giappone e spesso ha lavorato nei club nell’area di Los Angeles. Ha lavorato anche negli studi, ha composto per il cinema e la televisione e dal 1999 è stato il direttore del Thelenious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance della Università della California.

RUSHING JIMMY (VC)

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. 26/8/1903. – New York, 8/6/1972.

Nato in una famiglia della borghesia nera di Oklahoma City tutti dediti alla musica, la madre pianista e canta nel coro della chiesa e suo padre trombettista. Egli ha studiato il violino e il pianoforte con uno zio musicista di blues, cantante nei club e ha lavorato il compagnie di vaudeville. Ha studiato anche canto e musica alla Douglass High School di Oklahoma e ha frequentato la Wilbeforce University. Ha iniziato la carriera nel 1925 con Paul Howard, poi con Harvey Brooks e durante un soggiorno in California ha cantato con Jelly Roll Morton. Dal 1927 al 1929 ha fatto parte dei Blue Devil di Walter Page e ha raggiunto definitivamente la popolarità con la Benny Moten Kansas City Orchestra che nel 1935 alla morte di Moten è passata sotto la direzione di Count Basie ed egli è rimasto come cantante fisso sino al 1948. Ha inizia a lavorare come cantante solista, ha diretto egli stesso un piccolo gruppo con il quale si esibisce al Savoy Ballroom di Harlem. Nel 1957 è tornato per breve tempo con Basie e nel 1958 ha vinto il referendum del Down Beath. Ha lavorato con Benny Goodman, Buck Clayton, Bob Crosby, Johnny Otis, è stato ospite in una seduta di incisione con Duke Ellington. Ha partecipato a diverse tournée in Europa con Humphrey Layton nel 1952, con Harry James nel 1961 e con Eddie Condon. Insieme a Al Cohn e Zoot Sims è stato l’attrazione fissa del Half Note. Nel 1971 è stato colpito da infarto ed è deceduto l’anno dopo. E’ stato il primo grande urlatore della scuola sudoccidentale, egli ha imposto un lirismo romantico alla tradizione blues. Uno dei più grandi cantanti di blues urbano, anche se il blues costituiva una parte del suo vasto repertorio, che spaziava anche al motivo di successo e allo standard. Era il cantante ideale per grande orchestra con la sua potente voce di tenore piena di swing.

RUSHTON JOE, JOSEPH AUGUSTINE JR. (SB)

Evanston, Illinois. 1/11/1907. – San Francisco, California. 2/3/1964.

Dopo aver suonato la batteria, il clarinetto ed altri sassofoni si è fermato al sassofono basso nel 1928. Ha suonato nei California Ramblers e dal 1928 al 1932 ha diretto un suo gruppo a Chicago. Nel 1934 ha suonato con Ted Weems, poi con Frank Snyder, con Bud Freeman e con Jimmy McPartland. Si è trasferito in California dove ha suonato con Benny Goodman nel 1942, con Horace Heidt nel 1944 e nel 1945 ha fatto parte dei Five Pennies di Red Nichols con i quali è rimasto sino al 1963, quando è stato stroncato da un attacco cardiaco. Ha inciso anche con Pee Wee Russell. Ha contribuito a far accettare la voce di uno strumento cupo come il sax basso in piccole e grandi orchestre specie dixieland.

 

RUSSELL BILL, WILLIAM WAGNER (VIOL-COMP)

Canton, Minnesota. 26/2/1905. – New Orleans, Louisiana. 9/8/1992.

Musicista ma anche storiografo e produttore di dischi. Ha iniziato a suonare il violino a 10 anni e nel 1924 ha studiato musica Chicago e nel 1929 ha frequentato il Teachers College alla Columbia University, dove ha studiato anche composizione. Ha lavorato con il gruppo teatrale Red Gate Shadow Players ed ha collezionato dei dischi. Ha scritto articoli per le riviste: Jazz Hot, Jazzmen e ha scritto tre capitoli della Jazzmen: the Story Jazz Told in the Lives of the Men who Created it. Ha avuto un ruolo importante nel riscoprire la discografia di Bunk Johnson dall’inizio sino al 1942. Dal 1944 al 1947 ha pubblicato la serie delle “American Music Label”. Dal 1958 al 1965 ha curato l’archivio jazz della Tulane University di New Orleans e nel 1967 ha suonato nella New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra, con la quale ha registrato ed ha fatto delle tournée in Europa. Le sue composizioni sono state date all’Essential Music di New York nel 1990 e a New orleans nel 1994. Il suo patrimonio di memorie è stato acquistato dalla Historic New Orleans Collection.

 

RUSSELL CATHERINE (VC)

New York.

Voce che nella sua carriera ha cantato dal blues al country, dallo swing al soul, da Louis Jordan ai Grateful Dead. Ha attraversato i più vasti orizzonti della canzone statunitense, con grande disinvoltura, con grazia e con una coerenza che vengono dalla grande familiarità che questa cantante ha di un materiale così variegato e dalla convincente naturalezza. Figlia di Louis Russell lo storico pianista e bandleader storico, direttore musicale di Louis Armstrong, la madre Carline Ray bassista e cantante diplomata alla Julliard e alla Manhattan School of Music. Ha lavorato come corista in molti gruppi famosi, Paul Simon, David Bowie, Joan Osborne, Madonna ed altri. Nel jazz ha collaborato con Earl May, Larry Ham, Eddie Loke, Jimmy Wormsworth.

RUSSELL CURLEY, DILLON (B)

New York. 19/3/1917. – New York. 3/7/1986.

Ha fatto pratica di trombone suonando nella Young Men Christian Association, poi è passato al contrabasso ed ha esordito nel 1941 con Don Redman. Ha suonato poi con Benny Carter. Si entusiasma per il bop e ha fatto parte dei gruppi di Dizzy Gillespie, con Charlie Parker nel 1945, con Howard McGhee nel 1946, Tadd Dameron, con Sonny Stitt nel 1949, con George Wallington nel 1951, con Brew Moore, Stan Getz, Bud Powell, Miles Davis, Zott Sims, Fats Navarro, Art Blakey, Thelenious Monk. Alla fine del 1954 ha lasciato il jazz per il R&B. Ha registrato con Red Rodney, Dexter Gordon, Coleman Hawkins, Allen Eager, Serge Chaloff, Lester Young, Terry Gibbs, Herbie Stewart, Horace Silver, Duke Jordan, Johnny Griffin, Clifford Jordan, John Gilmore, Phil Woods. Uno dei musicisti bop più attivi ed affidabili, il periodo più attivo lo ha trascorso con Powell.

RUSSELL GENE, WILLIAM EUGENE (P-COMP)

Ha studiato al Fine Arts Conservatory e privatamente con Hampton Hawes. Nel 1967 ha iniziato a lavorare per le colonne sonore dei films. Ha suonato con Roland Kirk, Zoot Sims, Leroy Vinegar, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, Miles Davis. Ha diretto un suo trio al Festival di Monterey nel 1968 ed al John Coltrane Memorial Festival del 1970. E’ cugino di Charlie Christian. Ha fatto anche l’attore nel cinema ed è il fondatore della Black Jazz Records.
